Re: RPI 2010 Off-season thread V: Captain Kennedy and the A-Team

Watched the RDO last night...I will flip big time if they actually use a ref on a podium outside the rink...total gimmick feel to it. The other rules they mentioned would take some getting used to if they did implement them.

How on earth would they implement a ref on a podium?! A yellow light behind the goal to signify a penalty? Use him similar to a video review goal judge?

Not all changes in this world are for the better.:(

I realize that, and I'm not questioning the purpose of it, I'm questioning the implementation. Granted I don't have NHL Netowrk so I didn't get to see how they did it at the camp.

The ref standing on a soap box near (in?) the penalty box is totally ridiculous...if you cannot position yourself behind the play the way a ref on skates can, you WILL miss calls. Also, one cannot underestimate the personal interaction between the ref and the players; a good ref keeps things running smoothly. He reminds the players of the little things they might be overlooking. He is the conscience of the 12 players on the ice. Last night the ref on the box felt to me like an unruly fan who would not sit down.

...now would someone please tell me why I stayed up to watch this? Once again, it's the Stockholm Syndrome...

Gawd, I hate bringing this up...did JL decide not to come to RPI this year or did SA suggest a final year of junior development? Anyone know? I cannot believe a player would not come to school if the school's coach gives the green light...

It's all pretty murky. :)

Last time on "L'Engineers et Laliberté":

Jacob goes to Florida to visit his girlfriend during a hockey week, and re-attempts his SAT's. Meanwhile, the Engineers bring in a full class of 8 freshmen for the 2010-11 season. Will JL have better luck next year? Find out today, on "L'Engineers et Laliberté".

I think that he went to Florida with his girlfriend and her family.

I am all for changes that protect the players.
As for all the changes just to increase the offensive part of the game, I am totally against it.
This is a two way game, defense is just as important as offense. I do not want to watch a bunch of 6-5 games, just as I don't want to watch a bunch of 1-0 games. Let the players play at both ends of the ice.
I wouldn't mind if they cut back on the goalie equipment though, the pads and glove have gotten so big, you can't see the cage.
JMO :)

Agree 100%! I don't mind seeing offensive barnburners occasionally, but there are a lot of stuffed suits who don't understand the allure of a beautifully played 1-0 game (partially because the whiniest noises out there come from n00bs and dopes who can't wrap their head around the concept of enjoying a good defensive battle). Too much of one or the other would be bad, and there's a pretty healthy balance.

Agreed. Smaller goalie pads would make a significant improvement in the game for the better. One of my pet peeves (nit picking here) is the slash rule; I'm all for the penalty if you make contact with the other player. But if a player can hit your stick and cause you to drop it, then HOLD YOUR STICK TIGHTER! Man up...

Those same stuffed suits also like baseball. I wonder how they feel about pitchers' duels.... I would think if anything, the suits want to figure out ways to make the game go for as long as possible, in order to increase advertising revenue. Why are football, baseball, and squeakball (at least the last 3 minutes) so "popular" with the suits? They take forever to play and have an insane number of "time-outs" (breaks between half-innings for baseball) so they can advertise the heck out of that time. I wonder if one of the "proposals" is to increase the number of time-outs allotted to each team, and when they can be taken (during play vs. off-play).

Amen to that.

It doesn't help matters when composite sticks fall apart if you hold them too tight either. I've seen so many slashing calls that were stick checks it makes me sad.

Please...I bleed dolla' bills with every snap of a composite stick...

I do understand the safety concern related to free wheeling sticks. But again, the 'doctor' (Doc, present company excepted) is treating the symptom and not the source of the illness. All these penalties have been created/tightened because the players have become 'invincible' since the armor-like pads and cage were introduced. You would not see half the penalties you do that are stick related if 'Johnny Puckhandler' thought he'd lose his 'gibbs' (or, worse, an eyeball) and thus keep his stick on the ice...jmo...and for the record I did not always believe that but I've seen plenty of players who take liberties with no consequences because they're wrapped up like the Michelin Man...and thus I have seen the light.
