Re: RPI 2010 Off-season thread V: Captain Kennedy and the A-Team

...Im wondering if that could mean Laliberte might be on the move someplace? However, it could also mean Cornwall just wanted to add some depth for the upcoming season. The saga continues.....

I've got a buddy who works for ICE, I can ask him to check and see if there has been any southbound movement... ;)

Re: RPI 2010 Off-season thread V: Captain Kennedy and the A-Team

Also, I think it is more appropriate to generalize where a person is from than where a university is. Louis Leblanc didn't just have a successful freshman season at Harvard in Boston.
Actually it was in Boston. The Harvard rink is on the Boston side of the Charles. ;)

Re: RPI 2010 Off-season thread V: Captain Kennedy and the A-Team

Actually, although the argument is moot because what has happened has happened, I don't think the season would have changed at all. The reason I say this is because the chances would have been high that JDA would have played on either Chase Polacek's or Brandon Pirri's line. Opposing defenses already know to put the best defense on those lines. Since the other two players I mentioned are still with us, and will very likely be playing on separate lines, not much will change. It's just there will be a different person who could play the puck on that line.
Disagree strongly with you here. It matters. I think that is obvious. The lines will all be a little weaker than they would have been. One might argue we are down to 2 star forwards. If one of them gets tweaked and is out of the lineup then the other could have a tough go as the sole target of the opponents checkers. It just got harder for Chase to repeat last years performance.

I think we were a front runner for the ECAC title with Jerry. We are still in top 4 contention but we'll need more contributions from the incoming class now to offset the loss. I'm not saying that won't happen - it certainly could. But now it has to.

Plenty of firepower in Troy -- Helfrich and Cullen with a year more experience and strength should return to their scoring ways. Its step up or step out time for some. We're loaded at forward - if guys aren't skating every shift like its their last, on the shelf they go...its that simple. Higgs and Rogic will push for ice.

I'm probably in the minority here, but I actually think our defense will be better this year...Bergin, JFK and Foss return as vets with more familiarity with Vines and what he expects. Bailen is plug in top line veteran with grit and offense. Koudys, The Beef and Dolan will gain experience in the system.

Put me in that monority also-I think our defense will be improved also. I think we are strong at forward, but not quite loaded.

Interesting. I can see our defense possibly improving if York improves, but we will have to rely on at least two dmen without any NCAA experience. I think that they (especially Koudys) will be better in the long run than the graduating seniors, but it will take time.

Bailen is probably an improvement on Merth right now, and Dolan seems like he can fit into Burgdoerfer's role from last year. That really just leaves one of six d-men to be concerned with, and both of those guys have a height advantage.

On any given night, we are going to have one or two guys who have displayed talent at scoring wearing a suit and tie. I'll take it.

Anyone seen anything official on Watts' departure? Come to think of it, he wasn't at the golf tournament either.

I actually expect our defense to be better too.

We'll be OK on offense - we could have been better. That's all I'm really saying. Some others here are applying a "Fox and the grapes" mentality to this. And that's a great way to look at any setback. So let's move on but let's also avoid the "we are just as good without him" statements. They come across like the black knight after he lost his first arm.

Big time agreement here! My thoughts exactly.

The depth at forward is nice to have-I just haven't seen enough of some of the guys yet to know if they can step up to help Chase and BP. But I agree, sure nice to have some guys sitting that really want to play. This is not a situation we have had in many recent years.

I will give you Bailen. (Note that I was only referring to the dmen without DI experience) I can't see Dolan as an improvement over Burgdoerfer in the upcoming season. I hope that you are correct.

Well, look at it this way. We saw Marty O'Grady contribute significantly last year. We've seen Tyler Helfrich and Patrick Cullen contribute significantly in the past. We've seen Alex Angers-Goulet put up excellent supporting role numbers over the last two years. We saw Bryan Brutlag provide a boost to scoring when he was moved off the blueline. We saw C.J. Lee do everything but score last season. We saw Scott Halpern have his moments (although he was rough down the stretch). Throw in guys like Brock Higgs, Matt Tinordi, and Johnny Rogic who are coming off great years in junior A, and a solid checking line guy in Greg Burgdoerfer to compliment Joel Malchuk, Josh Rabbani, and Justin Smith to put together a 4th line with some degree of scoring kick to it, and it's easy to see how this could be a strong scoring team.

You're putting words in my mouth, Ralph. I didn't say he was an improvement, I said it seems like he could play that role well.

OK, then Burgdoerfer last year was better than Dolan will be in the upcoming season. That was my point. We have four proven dmen (including Bailen). After that, we have to rely on unproven quantitites. I believe that Koudys could become an All-ECAC Dman and might be our highest NHL dman draft choice ever, but it won't happen overnight.

I agree. No slight on the guys that left but I think we are upgraded at that position because the new guys are better skaters. My sources are at least telling me that much. The last few years we had troubling getting out of our zone. I think that will be an improvement and will take pressure off Yorkie in two ways 1) by him not trying to make long passes himself (that can cause problems) and 2)the other team won't be in our end as much. Expecting a big year from Bergin if the shoulders hold up. Looking forward to seeing him and Nick B on PP. I am hoping for good things from Jeff but he needs to be aggresive all season. I thought he had some good games but needs to do it all the time.
