Re: RPI 2010 Off-season thread V: Captain Kennedy and the A-Team

Those are the ones I recall-although I thought a defenseman in 1985 left early but I cannot remember who and looking at old media guides it appears they all stayed.

Hammond, Friday, and Langevin graduated. The other three who played in the championship game, Dark, Robinson, and Prendergast returned.

Re: RPI 2010 Off-season thread V: Captain Kennedy and the A-Team

The one thing I learned from Today's Ragord story is that Ed is influenced by our colleague WS and I quote -

"All five of us are coming back," Jerry D'Amigo said back in May. It was a reference to himself and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute's other four freshman from last season and that phrase became almost motto-like to excited RPI fans."

WS- Your influence is now felt in the main stream media. Geez I hope Ed isn't reading the blog when we blast him for all the typos

Although no front-page article with a picture, D'Amigo leaving is now under the news stories on this site.

Which is OK, since I don't believe any other early departure got that treatment either.

Some other news to throw out there, the Cornwall Colts acquired a first line centerman in Clarkson recruit Mitch Zion via trade yesterday with the Ottawa Jr. Sens. Im wondering if that could mean Laliberte might be on the move someplace? However, it could also mean Cornwall just wanted to add some depth for the upcoming season. The saga continues.....

Heard the radio interview...Jerry is doing a good job of laying down the pro athlete cliches..ha...ha....best of luck to the D'Amigos...he's now part of RPI lore.

Time to turn our attention back to RPI. Anyone heard about JLs SAT score? :-)

That's exactly what I found looking back-I just thought we had lost one more from the 85 team but it turns out it was only the 4 you listed. I wonder what their signing bonuses were in those days as compared to what JD is getting?

Re: RPI 2010 Off-season thread V: Captain Kennedy and the A-Team

Of course, we always use Binghamton, while they know he is from Johnson City. Same difference.

I never thought I would, but I have to respectfully disagree with the good doctor. First, Johnson City is a misnomer, it's a village, not a city. It's basically a suburb of Binghamton. Troy, however, is a city unto itself, so I believe has more of a right to be distinguished from Albany than Johnson City does from Binghamton. Also, I think it is more appropriate to generalize where a person is from than where a university is. Louis Leblanc didn't just have a successful freshman season at Harvard in Boston. I wouldn't argue something like this but it's the offseason and I need something to think about to forget what just happened.

Press and Sun-Bulletin in Binghamton refers to D'Amigo as being from Binghamton.

As for this season - I have a feeling that Bailen will play a major role this winter; along with Pirri and Cullen. I also have a feeling that Helfrich will be healthy and chomping at the bit to put last year in the rear view mirror. York will become the top goalie in the ECAC.

I also predict a good season for the men of Troy. But we will be left wondering what kind of season it might have been had we had the advantage of another full season with JD.;)

No we won't. He's gone, just like thousands of other past players. He can't help the team on the ice. Time to move on. Gotta play the cards you have left.

Actually, although the argument is moot because what has happened has happened, I don't think the season would have changed at all. The reason I say this is because the chances would have been high that JDA would have played on either Chase Polacek's or Brandon Pirri's line. Opposing defenses already know to put the best defense on those lines. Since the other two players I mentioned are still with us, and will very likely be playing on separate lines, not much will change. It's just there will be a different person who could play the puck on that line.

Re: RPI 2010 Off-season thread V: Captain Kennedy and the A-Team

A lot of times you have players who find college to be nothing more than the next step on the rise to the pros. And yeah to some extent, Jerry had that element to him, but listening to him on Wyland this morning you get the feeling that it was a tough decision for him partially because he was enjoying his time at the Institute. That satisfies me. Can't wait to see him go for his dreams - if he does make the Leafs the excitement for the upcoming year will be even higher.

And Jerry did mention on Wyland that he believes RPI will do fine without him, that he wasn't the whole team. Very true. Still many weapons in our arsenal.

Hopefully, he will pass on that opinion when asked by SA et al. to others, especially USNDTP members.

This from HF board yesterday. Zion was one of several Cornwall moves...

Trades in the CHL Today!

The Cornwall Colts acquire forward Ryan Lagace from the Carleton Place Canadians in exchange for a 2nd round draft pick in the 2011 CHL Draft and a Player Development Fee

The Hawkesbury Hawks acquire Sebastian Meltzer from the Cornwall Colts in exchange for a 1st round draft pick in the 2011 CHL draft and a 5th round draft pick in the 2011 CHL draft.

The Nepean Raiders acquire a 3rd round pick in the 2012 CHL draft from the Cornwall Colts in exchange for a 3rd round pick in the 2011 CHL draft.

The Cornwall Colts acquire Mitch Zion from the Ottawa Jr. Senators in exchange for Ryan Lagace, a 3rd round pick in the 2011 CHL draft and a Player Development Fee

Zion had 46 pts. in 53 games for Ottawa in 08/09.
Zion struggled a bit in the USHL (Sioux Cty.) last year 16 pts. in 53 GP for Sioux City (USHL). The kid has some skill...but he's not prolific like JL.

I know of only 7 of our players that left early to move on to the pros. I always have wondered how they would have done if they had stayed that one extra year (in most cases they left with one year to go). Of course it's time to move on-but how can you not at least think about how things would have been with any of these players staying?

I agree. I think that just as important as the scoring, Jerry, BP and Chase have brought a new, much needed attitude to the ice at RPI...they skate with an intensity and confidence that they can execute in any situation. They never panic or backdown and they trust their skills. I hope the Engineers continue to grow this confidence and share it with the new crop this fall. I think Bailen will bring much of this same attitude to the blueline.
