Re: RPI 2010 Off-Season Thread IV -- It's Looking Like No "I-V" Is Necessary!

I seem to remember concrete on the rink floor during the Activities Fair around the first week of classes instead of walking on boards that happen to be covering the ice... do they drain and re-flood the ice for that, or have they not yet flooded the rink to prepare for practices? I wouldn't think they would and instead would put boards down, but I don't know for sure.

Things have changed slightly in the last couple of years.

Great to hear that practices are started at HFH earlier... or at least plan to be under Coach's tutelage with the exception for renovations this year. Now that I think of it, there was at least one event my senior year where boards were put down, but I can't remember what it was (wasn't commencement rehearsal).

RC,

Nice blog post about the team from the wrong side of the Hudson. :)

It's not a matter of being under Appert's guidance earlier, that hasn't changed since it's an NCAA regulation. It's simply a matter of typically having the ice in earlier. It was in for early August last year.

RC,

The heck is he talking about? Oh yeah... Know Your Enemy: Union.

Thanks for posting it. Although it sounds like the interest may primarily be from Chris Lewis, and he may be planning visits to RPI and CCT because of an interest in engineering, I do think that it deserves mention here since he could end up being on the roster. We have had players from the league recently, but others (e.g., Cullen and Tinordi) have gone elsewhere before RPI.

I too would like to see him play against better talent. He's got the right frame at 6'0" 215. As far as I can tell he was never drafted in the USHL.

Here's a few quotes on Lewis I found from Addesa -- from the Feb. '10 USA JH magazine:

" ...He is physical in a sense that he finishes every check and creates space for his linemates...for two years he has had a Grade A work ethic...he does anything and everything to help his teammates."

I'd think they're going to want to make sure the renovations have progressed to the point where the building is ready for ice, before they flood the rink this year. ;)

Last I've heard was Labor Day for getting ice down.
Agreed JC -- the gaping holes in the facade might interfere with the chill down. :D

Can we call it practice for playing on a rink with very soft ice? :p :D

Labor Day sounds like a good time frame for everything in the main hall being well enough done to begin practices. I wonder if there will be open skating times between then and the first home game where people could get a first look inside prior to the games.

Good question. I know Ralph and others have wondered whether we'd be adding an exhibition before jumping into the pool at C.C. If not, Seth might have to dust off the 'ole red and white game...:D

We're jumping into a pool at CC? I didn't know that. ;) I guess that it makes sense because IIRC Ken Ralph was a swimmer in college. :D

I know we were able to get an exhibition against UPEI, but I thought there was another underlying reason as to the demise of the R&W game... granted I don't remember, hence why I pose the contemplation.

I only mentioned the R&W game because we don't currently have an exhibition on the books.

Oops. I know what you're getting at but that's not what you said...

Would RPI be able to play the UAlbany club team or HVCC in a scrimmage before they go to C.C. for the first few games of the season? Maybe invite them over to HFH one afternoon for a spirited practice to get the boys in real game mode. Not sure if this would count towards the overall schedule or even be allowed. Sure it isnt top level talent they would be playing but it would still be a different color jersey to play against after what must seem like a long preseason to the players.

Make it Siena. They can bring their legions of ladies for the game, then we can all party afterwards.

Kyle Palmieri is off to the NHL after just one year at Notre Dame. Wasn't he one of our targets at one point?

just got back from Lake Placid...had a chance to talk to JDA before game. Man, he's gotten huge compared to last year. It didn't seem he got a lot of ice time in the game although he was on the PK & there were a ton of penalties...didn't play on the PP. For what it's worth, the US beat Sweden 6-3 (last goal EN). US scored 4gs in 1st 4 minutes. Don't believe Jerry had any pts. Talked w/Toronto scout, his words, "Jerry was an absolute steal in the 6th rd". And he was really excited about his size. Also talked w/scout for Caps, they were very impressed by Patty Cullen, particularly his skating

I expected nothing less from Toronto, but that's great to hear the Caps think highly of Pat Cullen. Even if he spends some development time in Hershey in two years, it'd be great. I don't see him jumping the gun at all, but of course it might have been easier just to say the sky is blue. :D
