Re: RPI 2010 Off-Season Thread IV -- It's Looking Like No "I-V" Is Necessary!

Any folks here worried/concerned/stressed out about the number of recruits (or lack thereof) we have committed for '11 (two, maybe three) and '12 (none known)?

I'm honestly not trying to be alarmist, but I do think that Seth, Vines and Graham will have their work cut out for them in replacing Monty's work and connections on the recruiting trail...especially in the northeast.

So we can't use
RPI 2010 Off-Season V -- How we learned to stop worrying and love the Class of '15
for the next thread title?

It only means that we haven't spotted them yet. I'm not too worried, as we have the year to find more players. I'm sure Vines has some aces up his sleeve, and who knows what Graham knows?

A ticket, an overcoat and a very bad haircut... wasn't he the goalie for RSE's C league team? (In the day, RSE had a truly legendary practice rink in their yard... fat lot of good it did them... our Poly/APO wiped 'em, as I seem to recall...:D )

Could well be. But at the time I was there everyone played at some level. We fielded 1/2 of an A-league team (with Phi Tau), a B league, a C league, and two D league teams. So, there was some dilution of talent along the way :D.

Funniest thing was when out two D-league teams played each other to start the season. Absolute mayhem, people who had never skated before, let alone play hockey. Reffing that game was more dangerous than reffing at any other level.

Well, change our minds, then. A man could sleep through the whole game over there and never be bothered. Fix it.[/QUOTE]

Having sat with WS at a game or two...no one's gonna' be sleeping around him...

RSE was still building a rink in their yard every winter when I was a student
They also had a rink as far back as when I was a student if not further.

The rink is a classic part of the house. There are a few beautiful old photos with guys playing on the front ice in the archives. However, we've recently suffered from warm winters and a lack of dedication in the house. A weak attempt at front ice was made this past winter, but it didn't last longer than a week. I'm really hoping that we can pull it off this winter, since it's my senior year. Bet you didn't know I was Greek, did you?

Is it too soon to try and figure out where our beloved Engineers will be ranked in the preseason ECAC Coaches poll?

No it's not. I see them sitting between 4th and 6th in the poll, but definitely winning a bye in the actual play. That's my season prediction. And, I'll be sticking by it.

No.

Well, change our minds, then. A man could sleep through the whole game over there and never be bothered. Fix it.

You've clearly never sat next to the guys in my row then...

Last time I checked, most college rinks rely on the student sections to lead the madness....not the townies. Its not like the student section or the band (when they decide to show up in force) is leading the way with originality and spirit and numbers of late.

In fact, the only consistent thing about attendance at HFH in the last ten years is that the core townie faithful continue to show up. Can't say the same about the students. Fix it.

With Monty in the USHL and Graham and Vines out on the trail I actually think the exposure goes up and there is nothing to worry about. Appert will make it happen.

Well if we haven't spotted them yet, its definitely time to get worried. :p I think its more the case that we're waiting on decisions. As I said, its not panic time, but several ECAC teams are way ahead on commits.

And yet, your side lags well behind them. What does that say?

I'm not a student. Bother one of them.

And no, Southies do not just get credit merely for showing up. All they do is absorb sound and deaden the atmosphere.

As RC has correctly stated, its not Monty's job - nor will he have any time - to think about RPI. I do think that his close relationship with Seth can and will help us assess USHL players that we may be scouting... It is certainly possible the Monty will hear about or see a kid who may not be committed and could pass that info on to RPI.

No doubt Vines and Graham have a good feel for the kids in Western Canada...I guess its the northeastern part of the continent - that Monty clearly mastered - that will need addressing. Recruiting is every bit as much about building relationships with jr./prep coaches as is it is about ID'ing talent. That is where I think RPI will have to rebuild a bit.

Since it was mentioned that Kevin Broad is not going to be a Volunteer Assistant Coach, would it be possible the new VAC would have the northeast knowledge to at least pass along?

Anything is possible, but the last couple of VACs were recent grads who probably didn't have many contacts besides perhaps their old coaches.

Right, they're a huge drain...all they do is show up. They never support the squad. They never bring their kids or grandkids to the game. They never make large donations to the program, or buy advertising, or buy memberships to GBR and otherwise float the boat. Dead weight is all they are. Got it.

Congratulations on avoiding the topic at hand by bringing up irrelevancies. One fails to see how any of what you just mentioned pertains to the fact that it is dead quiet on the South Side every night, which is what we're talking about.

If you could think before reacting, you'd realize that if they're busy escorting their kids to the snack stand or the bathroom or having a civilized conversation with their section mates WHILE watching the game might be possibly be a reason they're not screaming like drunken maniacs as you apparently desire.

Wow, reality is slipping away. I think you might just be exaggerating just a bit.

Two logical fallacies in one sentence. One is known as the strawman argument and the other is the slippery slope argument.

Slippery slope: You decide that because I dislike the utter lack of energy displayed by the south side, that what I really mean is that they need to "scream like drunken maniacs." Nothing could be farther from the truth, but you need to make yourself look like the rational one... yet you are using an irrational argument.

Strawman: You offer reasons why the argument that I have not made is not valid in order to try and prove me wrong. As I mentioned, no one is looking for "screaming like drunken maniacs," but you then go into detail about why my argument (that I haven't made) is wrong. Set it up, knock it down. The strawman. A logical fallacy.

Are you done beating around the bush yet? You still categorically refuse to address the topic at hand, preferring to stay on the periphery. That's fine by me. It just keeps proving me right, because you can't address the real problem that GLM and I have brought up. You're just acting insanely butthurt on a level I haven't seen since I dared to speak ill of RIT's performance at the Frozen Four.

Wow, reality is slipping away. I think you might just be exaggerating just a bit.

I'm sorry, cheering and applauding for goals doesn't count. They do that anywhere, even at Brown.

I've got no quarrel with WS. Truth is I will have his back in 90% of arguments. But if you mess with the bull, you get the horns. :p

Re: RPI 2010 Off-Season Thread IV -- It's Looking Like No "I-V" Is Necessary!

I'm not one much for the in-fighting, but I've sat on both sides of the building numerous times and the south side is the quiet side. It's also the family side. WS I'm sure you and your row do fine to hold up your end of the fan bargain, but the other 99% of the fans on that side don't do it. I'd suggest putting buzzers in their seats to liven them up, but giving everyone heart attacks doesn't go over well either.

The south side is the side you sit on if you want to listen to everything the north side is saying and don't want to take part in it. Having gotten the stink eye on the south side by regulars (!!!) for doing all the normal routines, it's a fun vacuum over there. This isn't a slight on you WS, it's a slight on everyone else over there that could use a little vodka in their prune juice.
