Post game interview with SA, JFK, and Brandon Pirri on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6cP3cWklVaA

About the same as the article posted earlier, though great to hear Brandon wants us to throw a hat out on the ice (and subsequently get kicked out of HFH for the night).

I wonder if that's what the 32 seconds shirts are about, that Coach wants his players to think about the 32 second shifts they play. Seems short, but I guess he wants to keep throwing fresh legs at the opponents.

Re: RPI 2009 - 2010 -- RIP Nathan Marsters

Senna, your son is right on about the band and puckman.
When I go to the games, I always sit at the band end of the ice. They just make the atmosphere worth the trip.
Puckman is the best and most misunderstood mascot in college hockey.
I hope you and your son injoy many more visits to HFH. :)

Kevin Beattie sent a message to the RPI Sports list saying that they hope to put the post game press conference on Youtube after all home games. That's a good idea.

Re: RPI 2009 - 2010 -- RIP Nathan Marsters

Spot on RC - especially about CJ Lee. The kid really impressed me last night. More on him in a bit...

I came early with my son to watch the warm ups, and was glad to see these guys as a team - meaning they all just looked like the got along great and as a very cohesive unit. There seemed to be a very strong bond between them. During warm ups, Pirri was laughing and had a smile on his face the entire time. Kennedy was mixing it up with some of the guys too. Given the struggles that this team has had over the past few seasons, it was great to see them so jelled. Pirri is also an absolute sniper. As the team was running thru its drills York was stoppijng virtually all of the shots...and Pirri netted at least 8 in a row. I can also say that he is thin (sizewise). During the warm up he was standing next to the glass and had his jersey sleeve rolled a bit so you could see his wrist and part of this forearm, and he is very thin.

As for the game, my impressions was that they played well in the first, but kinda as Appert says in the Record interview, just to much dangling and trying to show or make a perfect pass. They should have shot way more in the 1st and this game never would have been a contest. In the 2nd, came out on fire and netted 2 quick goals on intensity and just putting shots on goal. At that point, I was ready for them to have a huge 2nd period. Dont get me wrong, they played great. Even 5-5, they had SH trapped in their end for some long stretches and almost looked like they were on the power play. Totally controlled the game. I did think though that they played down a bit to the opponent's level and their speed and effort ebbed such that they got outworked from time to time. 3rd seemed like a carousel to the penalty box, and some was ticky tack but none the less just bone headed - and it cost them as SH stayed aggressive and just out worked them to tie it up. RPI dominated the overtime.

Some other thoughts - York is the real deal, but my god, some of the rebounds were huge. He just seems always in the right place, but those rebounds will hurt us over the course of the season. Appert said that he thought Pirri worked hard all game, and again maybe its me, but I didnt see it. He looked extremely comfortable and christ the kid knows how to find the net, but I didnt get the impression that he worked nearly as hard as the rest of the team. There were times that the SH forwards seemed to be able to skate by and around our D. Overall, I thought the D played pretty well and with a chip when needed. The game was pretty chippy and I think that it got our guys out of sync a bit (hence the 3rd period parade to the box). I like D'Amigo. Not afraid to scrap it up a bit and just drive hard, although it did seem like he might have expected some other things on the ice at times (for example got called for an offsides because he drove the blue line expecting his teammate to get the puck deep but didnt make that play). I'm sure that stuff will work itsself out the more they play together. Back to CJ Lee - RC was spot on...this kids was all over the ice. At one point in the 3rd, he controlled the puck for what seemed like 30+ seconds (carried it in skated / stickhandled between players, had a shot, picked up the deflection in the corner and just kept control and moving). On this board, we keep mentioning our 2 draft picks, but this kid is going to be a real contributer. I can also see why Kennedy is the captain. He took a shot off the inside of his knee at one point and was visibly hurt, but never went down and 10 seconds later drove into the corner against 2 SH guys, mixed it up and came away with the puck. I love warriors.

In all, this is a fun team to watch. Lets not forget how young these guys all are. There is some great, exciting hockey in store for a while. Yes, they almost let this one slip away, but this team is good - and actually probably much better than they even believe.

1 last note - I sat in Section 7 last night towards the top, and there was a bearded gentleman with a cap with all kinds of pins in it basically keeping his own scoresheet and had USCHO printout of the SH roster....was that any of the posters here ??

Sorry - 2 other things just thought of...they band was great. Even my 12 yr old son commented. He was hysterical when the ref took the ice before the warm up and the band went wild on them. Classic. The other is Puckman. The dude is a classic as well. Again, my kid thought that was the best and wants to bring a camera next time we go to get a pick with him. Nice.

Alan is definitely the real deal. You know he is when he's receiving compliments from Cornell fans. And given their goaltender tradition (I mean Ken Dryden and the other NHL players, not the tradition of flopping like a fish), that's saying something. However, don't be surprised when you see our ECAC opponents continuously trying to crash the net and expose the rebounds. I know he will definitely want to work on those rebounds and better his game, given the initiative he took while Mathias was getting most of the play time last year.

John is a warrior. And notice during the game that the opponents make sure Kennedy is between them and the wall, not the other way around. If HFH had a jumbotron, JFK would have a highlight reel. :D I still remember I was at the Governor's Cup, he completely laid out a Colgate player, and I knew right there he was going to be a fun player to watch for 4 years.

Puckman is definitely a spectacle for RPI, and to think the administration wants to dispense with Puckman..... hopefully they figure out they'd lose a LOT of their fan base if they did that. And considering they dropped the chicken, it's pretty evident they're listening.

This is a fun team to watch most definitely. And I do wish we'd play the 3rd periods like I saw the third period during the New Hampshire game. But hey, this is going to be a good year, like we were saying even back in March.

I also agree with this. Sure we can read about what they say, but their tone of voice says so much more as to how they feel about the play for the night.

Re: RPI 2009 - 2010 -- RIP Nathan Marsters

Went to my first game at the Field House last night, great time. Fans were a riot. I was pleasantly surprised to see an entire arena respect the Alma Mater. I think I heard our own "Clarissima" played a grand total of two times at BU (matriculation and graduation). Anyway, it appears I've found my local team while I'm back home in the CR. Go 'Tute!

Glad that you enjoyed your maiden voyage at HFH. You should know that Ralph will not activate your fan club membership until you tell us who you will be rooting for on 12/11. :D

I agree with Senna - Pirri certainly has a nose for the net but at times and especially during the 3rd period I thought he looked like he was standing around in the defensive end waiting for a breakout pass, his first goal was a really nice play to move the puck into a good shooting position that the goalie totally could not see, but overall I didn't think he played a hustle game.

CJ Lee is really fun to watch and I think will really develop, he is hustle and uses his body to shield the puck extremely well, has a good stick and slips through small spaces and seems to know how to just take the puck to the net.

Friday, October 23, 2009 at Hobey Baker Rink (Att: 200)
Granted this was an exhibition but with that few in Baker rink the echoes must have been reverberrating:eek:

Actually Doc, I thought we had a good crowd last night -- even some folks seated in the cheap seats down by the visitors locker room... I believe the announced attendance was 2,789 - but it seemed/looked/sounded more full than that.

Perhaps one of the public safety clickers broke (the one that counts things). :D

Re: RPI 2009 - 2010 -- RIP Nathan Marsters

Overall I agree with the game reviews already posted here. I think the after effects of the AK trip might have had something to do with RPI's sub-par 3rd period...just a hunch. i for one am hoping we are done with Alaska voyages for a while. My one criticism from last night is that the defense is still allowing forwards to gain the blue line with little or no contact along the boards. If they don't get this solved, this will come back to bite us down the road. As good as the D corps has been in open ice, they need to introduce themselves to puck handlers entering the zone along the boards. I realize it is a judgment call as to whether you can get there in time and not draw penalties, but too often I've seen forwards streak down unmolested and cut back to the net getting free shots off...

Wicked - nail on the head with the D not "introducing" themselves earlier. It seemed like way to many breakouts were 3 on 2 against us (all 3 forwards too deep) and maybe thats the reason for the lack of introduction as if they got past it then a 2 or 3 on 1. We just seem to give too much time and space to gain speed and enter our end (consistent with my prior comment on us getting skated past). As I said before, I thought that they played very well and with a chip when needed, and certainly had a couple of big hits. Its a delicate balance between wanting the forwards to crash then net and 3 guys getting caught deep. I certainly dont want some type of lock played and love that the guys up front want to crash and maybe think that they can just score and get it back, but there has to be more pressure from the forwards. Overall when we played with intensity and were physical, we completely dominated. Its clear to me our forwards are very skilled. If they have a bit more of the "guided missile" mentality when the dont have the puck, this team will be scary.

On this note, I think Appert was spot on with his analysis. A young team like that probably thought they were going to roar through the game and stomp these guys. They were looking to make highlight plays in the third, meanwhile SHU kept being abrasive and aggravating to play against and it paid off for them. The observations on Pirri in the third are pretty accurate, but the brother showed up big so whatever.

SHU was rolling with the NZ trap pretty hard last night, note how many times RPI had to dump in to gain the zone. When SHU was down, they were also doing a lot of home run passes to a guy sneaking out to play the role of cherry picker. It's a sh-t way to play hockey (in my not-so humble opinion) and I'm glad RPI was at least aware enough defensively to not get burned by that crap.

To be fair, they stomped a mudhole in these guys in the 2nd. A more experienced team would have scored more than 2 goals in that period.

And yeah, they might have been a little overconfident and slightly tired in the 3rd. They looked the latter at least.

I won't buy the "tired" aspect, they had great jump in OT. Considering how the third went, if they were tired SHU would've continued to press them. I don't think the two minute break between regulation and overtime is enough to get it all back. :)

Well if they weren't tired, they became very disinterested in the 3rd, because they could easily have lost the game. Often times in OT, adrenaline takes over, regardless of how tiring regulation was.

Not to say they were disinterested, but they were certainly frustrated. Legit and bogus penalty calls piled up on them because they stopped attacking their stupid trap and instead chose to try and dance through it. That won't fly.

I don't disagree, but there was also a fair amount of standing around waiting for the other guy to make the play.

Re: RPI 2009 - 2010 -- RIP Nathan Marsters

To be fair they beat a team from the atlantic conference, playing their first real game that rang two of their posts, had one behind the goaltender that did not trickle in, missed a few open nets, had trouble passing and had six plus odd man rush opportuities, while on the their end of the ice their tender was giving up a softy or two. Some here make it sound like it was much more of a dominate effort than it was.(that is an opinion)The second period was a good as the third was bad. They were lucky to win, which in itself is a major turn in the right direction imo. Skilled teams tend to get lucky more often than non skilled teams and over the last four or five years there has been no luck. Hands down the skill level is up and that is never bad. I think they should have an easier time with AI tonight. It will be very interesting to see what SH does to Union tonight in their second game. I am optimistic once again but i always am at this point in the season. A win is always good.
