I totally agree, but we have played our best hockey in the first month of the season since Appert took over. So I can only hope that we will continue to create when the competition gets tougher.
I am anxious to see how we play against Union next week. At least they are ECAC opponent.
These last few years have turned me from an optimist to a skeptic.
We'll take them one game at a time.

Its like they are geared to speed and flow, and when that is broken, they don't know what to do. JMO

#2 is the reason I like at least one big forward on each line-something we just do not have. Perhaps as the season goes on we will wear teams down with speed and flow.:rolleyes:

I don't where the notion that these teams we played this weekend are pushovers.These are division 1 teams w/scholarships,and with the explosion of junior hockey in the past ten years there are plenty of good hockey players left. After the so called big schools are done recruiting, the pickings are far from slim.These teams tend to be big and old and know how to play the game in particular the trap and in my honest opinion have a shot to win most games they play.From what I've seen over the years they have really good goal tending. Most teams are in any given year looking for 1 or at the most 2 goalie recruits which leaves a lot of quality tenders out in the cold.Looking at the rosters for the teams over the weekend combined they had 36 players over
21...16 players over 23...and 6 24 year olds and SHU had 11 players over 6 foot.
No push overs just ask Nate Lehman...these were 2 good wins over the weekend any way you look at it... Again ask Nate !!!!!!!

Very pleased by the turnout last night. Not just the number either - by the end of the game, the frequently silent south side of HFH was actually getting into the game and cheering (loud enough to hear over in section 17 at least). Both sides of the rink were feeding off each other late in the 3rd to try and spark the team, which is something we wouldn't have seen the past couple seasons after blowing a 2-goal lead.

Last season it felt like half the rink would have packed it in when the score hit 2-2 assuming we were just going to lose.

Bad experience of the night award goes to the box office. After I park last night, my girlfriend goes to pull out our tickets from the glove box and finds we've been given (in amongst our season tix) 6 tickets to the Sacred Heart game instead of 2 each to SHU, AIC, and Army.

Took about 15 minutes at the box office to get replacement tickets, in the top row in a different section from our seats. Would have been nice if the box office staff had at least been apologetic about it but instead the first 5 minutes was spent with us having to convince them we didn't purposely buy 6 tickets to one game and none to the next two. Like we were on trial for trying to scam them out of tickets or something.

While that statement may be true about most D-1 schools, we pushed AIC around all night. If it was'nt for #9, they would have had nothing. Their goalie left rebounds all night. The only thing that saved them was our inability to cash in on numerous opportunities.

Doc there is no doubt that a wide body parked in front of the net would have netted 3 or 4 goals last night, as AIC's keeper was spitting up a rebound on nearly every he shot he stopped. I will say that our forwards could greatly help their own scoring chances if they stopped in front of the net on the rushes they are so good at creating. Quite often the kid heading for the net skates right past instead of stopping in fornt. If they stop they will at a minimum create a screen, and better yet, very likely have the chance to bury a loose puck.

That might all be true, but AIC never stopped skating or hitting and could easily have won that game.

Apologies if this was covered already, but has there been any update on Helfrich's injury? Appert says its "not a knee and its not broken.." Hope Tyler is not out too long. Also, I forgot to mention one of the unsung heros last night was Joel Malchuk who had several great shifts including late in the third when busted his ### keeping possession of the puck down low, drawing a penalty that led to the GWG. A play like that doesn't hit the score sheet but was pivotal. Nice job by Joel.

IMO The AIC tender was outstanding last night the only questionable goal he may have let in was Bergins and I believe he might have been screened.He did get lucky a few times but so did Dave Dryden and I believe Martin Brodeur still does once and awhile.Remember some luck can be sound fundamentals and good positioning.As far as rebounds, some are unavoidable because good players when they don't see an opening shoot the puck on goal to a particular spot or piece of the tenders equipment where some sort of rebound is almost assured I believe the high end guys we have now ie: Pirri,D'Amigo,O'Grady did that multiple times last night.

I don't think I'd call him outstanding, he did make a lot of good stops, but I reserve the "outstanding" tag for flawless play. This kid was giving rebounds on nearly every shot he faced...his defenders did a good job of not letting our guys bury them.

I agree that this is a trend that is going to continue. I was at a youth hockey coaching seminar yesterday and there is no question that the coaching that kids see today coming up is much much better than in the past. The number of select and elite programs - starting as young as age 7 almost matches the number of town teams it seems. Goalies are specializing and getting goalie coaching at age 9 and even sooner. As a result, the average player is better and the spread between the best and average is better and better. And... there are plenty of goalies out there that know what they are doing.

The gentleman running the seminar told us a story about how he had 3 goalies try out with him a few years back and had to cut one of them. They were all very good so he kept the seniors and cut the sophomore. But not before telling his father that his son was pretty good and it was a matter of numbers. That kid was Ricky Dipietro.

I also watched Merrimack take it to UVM on Friday. They are a pretty good team. There are not any walkovers out there these days. Which makes me wonder why I thought we would win by a combined score of 9-3 this weekend??:confused:

IIRC, that was mentioned by the announcers during the game. SA's post-game interview which said it was lower leg and not broken is a bit more recent.

OK Thanks - my guess is we won't know anything until we hear Schottzie ask Appert about Tyler on the radio this week.
