Re: RPI 2009 - 2010 -- RIP Nathan Marsters

After hearing from a friend that e-mailed the coach, "32 Seconds" is team proprietary information. We are only left to give our best guesses.
I've got a guess. 32 seconds is the amount of time an average player will have control of the puck in a 20 minute period (all other things considered equal). You get there by including the goalies and assuming that both teams have 18 skaters. 1200 seconds divided by 38 equals 31.57.

The gist of this is that you don't get to touch the puck much during a game. As far as what the reminder means, there are two obvious ones I can think of. The first is that you've got 32 seconds, what are you going to do with it? The second would be a reminder that the game is not about the 32 seconds that you have the puck, but what you do when you don't have it. Teams that support the puck well come out ahead.

My guess is that the 2nd point is what they are reminding themselves about. Support your teammates' 32 seconds by working hard without the puck.

Re: RPI 2009 - 2010 -- RIP Nathan Marsters

This team is young and obviously loaded. I think that they will play better against better competition. I thought that they looked very good at times this weekend and will walk away with that rather than what appeared to be them playing down. They should have scored more goals in both games and also think that they had a lot of chances. They easily could have netted a couple more each game and the tone of this thread would be totally different right now. I would have loved to see them light someone up and get the blood in the water with respect to scoring, but they have the talent and a bunch a guys that seem to love to score so again, I'm not overly concerned at this point. I think the best is yet to come - and as someone mentioned previously Rome wasnt built overnight. Lastly, on Tyler - I watched the game on TV and thought a knee / ACL (I blew mine out playing so hits me in the stomach every time I see things like that)...but Appert said after the game that it was ankle and not knee.

Re: RPI 2009 - 2010 -- RIP Nathan Marsters

I just wanted to post my thoughts on Friday's game against Sacred Heart. I've been travelling all weekend, so this is my first chance to really sit down and think about the game.

I sat in Section 9 for the first period and didn't get a great sight line on Sacred Heart's goal, but it looked to me like York tried to get his glove on the puck (after not realizing where it was for nearly two or three seconds), and all of a sudden it was in the back of the net. I'm not sure how the D-men failed to tie up their guys, but those kind of goals happen every once in awhile and I'm not really worried until they happen consistently. The power play looked pretty smooth. The passing was nice and clean. We only capitalized once, but I think the skill was definitely there.

For the second and third periods, I moved over to Section 33. Pirri was so late getting on to the ice for his first goal because Allen took forever to get off of the ice. Maybe it's just me, but I think that should be automatic for a goalie. He hesitated twice or three times and we nearly didn't keep the puck in the zone because our sixth man had to wait to get on the ice. But, on both of the second period goals, it felt like we were able to put the pressure on the net, and the more we throw the puck at the net, the more times it's going to hit the twine.

It's been stated before, but the skaters weren't tired during the third period. We were complacent and let Sacred Heart take it to us. That's not a strategy that's going to win us games during the "real" season. After Appert called a timeout and tore them a new one is when they started to look like they wanted to play. That showed in the OT as we really controlled play. It wasn't a pretty win, but we did fight back (eventually) and win, something that would not have happened last year or two years ago.

With regards to us seeming to have a guy limping off the ice every twenty seconds, and the hits on Jerry: D'Amigo took a run at the Sacred Heart goalie when he played a puck behind the net early in the third. So, they just went head-hunting for the rest of the period. And, when he retaliated, it cost us. And, I'd say that half of the times a guy was skating off while limping, it was because he took a puck where he didn't have padding. Sacred Heart played physically, but I don't think that it was dirty play, in any way, shape, or form.

Scoring has gone down ever since goalie pads were enlarged. I think that we will have to live with that. We did play a relatively consistent game, although it was not against a top-flight opponent.

i dont quite understand Ralph what that has to do with hoping we win 2 games this week by the score of 4-2? I know that scoring is down-there hasnt been a 30 goal scorer in the ECAC in 10 years. Although we might see one this year:D

I think that goalie pads are a big factor in scores going down. 4-2 is possible, but one just doesn't see many 7-5 games anymore.

Can someone refresh my memory on the back story behind the Newfie Screech at Manory's?

Ralph you are misreading- 7-5 was the total goals scored in both games this past weekend. I had hoped for 8-4 as the total. Is age creeping up? I would never predict 7-5 for an RPI score any more-not since 1985 at least:)

I was speaking in general, not on what you specifically predicted, which I don't remember anyway. Your post was just the one that I quoted. :)

OK-thought you were losing it for a while. We can't afford to have our resident statistician not at 100% around here:) I had made a total weekend prediction last week and was doing the same for this weekend and the 2 games. I am overjoyed when we score 4 goals per game and hold the opposition to 2 or less. We have just not been able to talk about numbers like that around here in 3 years.

Remember you have until the puck drops at 7PM on Friday night's Harvard-Dartmouth game to get your picks into my annual ECAC Pick The Standings Contest.

Ankle injuries are tough to forecast-if there is no break the ligamental injury can be anything from a small stretch to a partial tear to a complete tear. You could be dealing with a week or as long as six weeks. The other problem is that it can be one of those nagging injuries that just flares up every time you try to play. hopefully we are looking at a quick recovery and he is 100% soon. In any case this is better than reinjuring his knee which could very well have meant the season would be lost for him.

Was glad to learn from CHN's ECAC preview that Charles Polacek is one of our key returning players, that we didn't have any noteworthy additions to the squad this year, and that we were picked to finish eighth "despite" last year's record.

When you wrote that CHN wrote that we don't have any noteworthy additions, do you mean that they did not specifically name any? For none of the teams is there a line "Key Newcomers," and they did write "a very good freshman class," although it was a quote from SA, not necessarily their opinion. They did indeed mention some recruits for some other teams in the bodies of the previews.

I'm sure they gave detailed scouting reports on Cornell though. That's all that matters.
