Re: RPI 2009 - 2010 Part II: I Believe in Seth Appert

Halpern has speed but the skill is lacking, he may be able to race to a lot of pucks but he doesn't get that much done when he gets it. Smith has the ability to sustain an offensive possession and help out a lot more defensively(i think we need that) than Halpern. Hes much better on the boards, physical doesn't just mean hitting or a slugfest or whatever.
I don't think Cornell played particularly physical though, they just forecheck hard and they skate pretty well, which I think Smith would've helped more with. Also Princeton and Yale both have speed that surpasses ours.
I expect(okay, more like hope) Smith to play against Union who is a really physical team and would just grab onto Halpern's leg all game. Though I definitely don't mind seeing both Halpern & Smith with Vassel sitting, but i'd rather see Lee out there than anyone else
I don't really think we disagree. Smith and Halpern offer different things.
Just for clarity: Halpern has 5pts. in 12 games. Smith has 1 point in 8..
I agree that more than anything, we're missing Lee in the lineup.

Re: RPI 2009 - 2010 Part II: I Believe in Seth Appert

While I see what you're saying, Yale and Princeton the last two years have shown what it takes to beat them and it's speed and skill and pressure on their puck carriers. Trying to get into a slugfest with them is only going to wear you out because that's what they're built for.

I'm not only talking about checking, but the ability to go into a corner and out muscle a guy and come out with the loose puck, or the ability to skate thru a check along the boards...size has a lot to do with these 1 on 1 battles where speed can't help you.

Did I see someone mention size? You can't teach that;)

I think being on the 1st line for some games sort of helps that a little. Also when Smith was playing, Malchuk didn't decide to start scoring yet :p

by the way, I actually think we need York to start showing up more than anything ;)
Lee might actually add a little more than Bergin, hes just such a fantastic two way player. But our d does need drastic help; which Bergin can do

Someone needs to teach our whole team to be bigger, where are those **** growth elixirs? Time to move the research budget and sell the EMPAC, of course first thing to do is get rid of Shirley or put her on some skates - i'm sure she can take out a player or 2 without a call...I mean, she is a doctor professor president, hockey player isn't out of the question and no ref would dare penalize her - she is the Senat....er, RPI

Re: RPI 2009 - 2010 Part II: I Believe in Seth Appert

On a completely different topic, I noticed in the T/U today that RPI will be building Shirley a new palace to replace the 4,800 sq. ft. "shack" she is currently living in...something about it not being grand enough to entertain the caliber of guests she is attracting..blah blah blah. The upside I suppose is that the school isn't paying for it, she somehow fleeced the Board of Directors to ante up for the costs of the new palace. Wow.

Complaining about SAJ is becoming way, way, way too cliche.

She deserves every penny.

so is RPI's overall lack of hockey success in the past 5+ years, but we can still talk about it, you know - instead of making worthless posts that don't progress anything except your ego.

to wicked: any line with Helfrich & Polacek is the top line, even without Helfrich - Polacek & Cullen make a pretty mean combo as well. As much as I love Pirri, he still plays around with the puck way too much and takes stupid penalties. Polacek probably competes harder than anyone on the ice at any given time and has one heck of a shot - he knows what to do with the puck and that comes from experience.
Will Pirri be a better player than Polacek in the future? Of course, but right now he isn't. So, wherever Polacek is - thats the first line.
I of course could say similar things about D'Amgio and Helfrich or say that Lee > O'Grady so if you put him on that top line its a force etc etc

I can agree with all of this. Also as far as Pirri goes, would love to see him bulk up 10-15 lbs or so, and, yes, the penalties. Gets lots of slashes called on him.

Can see a lot of Brad Tapper in him offensively, but hopefully he stays all 4 years.:D

Don't be so hard on yourself. Over time, you might become a worthwhile contributor.

Would love to have him turn out to be another Brad Tapper. We haven't had anyone close to 31 goals in 10 years. And yes, I think you need a little feistiness out there to be able to score from in close. i think Pirri has the talent for sure to be a top ECAC scorer and I am beginning to think he has the temperment also.:)

I agree that you need an edge to be a great player. Pirri seeems to have that. From what I have seen in person this year, D'Amigo also plays tough.
Can only get better.
Now if Pirri can start burying those open net opportunities, we might come away with a few more points. :(

Re: RPI 2009 - 2010 Part II: I Believe in Seth Appert

I noticed in the game notes for tonight's game http://www.rpiathletics.com/documents/2008/11/13/2008-09MHKYGameNotes68.pdf?id=607 that Christian Morissette is not listed. Has anyone heard that he has left the team?

He's not listed in the roster, either.

Upon further research, the online directory still shows him as a first-year student. Maybe academic struggles kept him from being able to contribute on-ice.

He is on the team picture which was recently added to the roster.

It's possible his departure from the team is very recent. The individual player info pages for the men's team range from http://rpiathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=3002&path=hockey to http://rpiathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=3030&path=hockey. Info comes up for every rp_id in that range except for 3017 (most likely Morissette).

Edit: Google confirms that 3017 was indeed Morissette. Google's cache, as current as last Thursday, still has him listed.
