RPI 2009-10 Part IV: The Boys are Back in Town

Re: RPI 2009-10 Part IV: The Boys are Back in Town

It just seems like the refs are calling a very difficult game for defensemen to figure out. If a forward flips the puck into the zone and as a defenseman you hit him to slow him down, it is often called interference (when you were allowed that move forever before). If you crunch a man into the boards in the corner trying to freeze the puck and the sound is loud enough, you get called for boarding. Well, at least it seems that way when WE do it. I watched D'Amigo get mugged so often and nothing getting called that it has beome almost routine. Am I missing something here?

The general rule on those dump in plays is that the defenseman gets to finish his check (read: hit the man once) and then they both have to get after the puck. Some officials let it go much more than others. After the NCAA semi-adopted the NHL standards on obstruction and interference, its awfully touch and go on what's allowed. I, for one, prefer the "hit once and go get it" standard because I want to see guys play the puck and not dance with each other.

The way D'Amigo is allowed to be assaulted is awful. It wasn't as bad last night aside from the hit he took in open ice in the first period, I think he was just stunned as his stick got lifted up into his own face and that's why he went off after that.

Exactly what I meant. It seems the rule is being interpreted very differently each night. Cornell and others seem to benefit from it while we get called almost every time-and it seems to occur at the most sensitve of times during a game.

The RPITV video of the 1985 panel discussion is up http://www.rpitv.org/productions/276-legends-of-85-panel-discussion.

Did anyone notice if Ken Hammond was wearing a NCAA championship ring? For those who weren't here, about ten years ago, his ring was on eBay. DrD and I (and others) were watching the price climb to about $800 IIRC and then was withdrawn. I suspected that it had been stolen, but nothing official ever came out.

Ralph: I followed that eBay auction daily-even checked back for weeks after it was withdrawn. I was going to bid on it seriously but it was removed before I had the chance. To my knowledge it never appeared in any form again.

I saw Ken Hammond before the game on Saturday and he had a big ring on his hand - whether it was a class ring or a title ring, I don't know - but it was a large gold ring with a red-ish stone in it.

INCH has the boys ranked 18th in their Power Rankings.

Odd notes: SLU moved up one position after a 1-point visit to the Capital District.

I commented on this very issue earlier in the season. For as long as I can remember the guidelines were exactly as you described - and every defenseman was trained to finish his check. It's got to be incredibly frustrating for these guys because (a) there seems to be significant ref-to-ref variance on how this is called; and (b) they are being called for a reaction that by the time they reach college is second nature.

That sounds like an RPI class ring. IIRC, the NCAA ring had some small diamonds.

I can't get it to run at home or at work. Any clue how I can access this?

It doesn't work for me using Internet Explorer. It worked when I used Google Chrome.

RHamilton said they were having problems getting it to work with IE. I would suggest using another browser.

I may have to give INCH another look since that fact seems like it might have been gleaned from WAP. :)

But I do think 18th is a little premature.

Enjoy it!
Someone is taking notice of the advances RPI Hockey has been making .:)

I like the rating-but I also think 18 is a bit high for us at this stage-we are still barely above .500 overall and in the ECAC. We are getting better-and a couple of wins this weekend will help.

Agree completely Doc. Now is the time to get on a roll. Two wins this weekend would be huge for our confidence. I sure would enjoy RPI beating up on Harvard in their barn on Fri. night. :D

Hobey Baker voting is working once again. Results are showing and it looks like from previous results voting might actually have been down.
