RIT Women's Hockey 2009-2010

Re: RIT Women's Hockey 2009-2010

Last year we were 3-0 against DI teams. Unfortunately those don't help you for tournament selection and that is what probably kept us out. As far as moving up we can't do that until 2011.

3-0 against D1 teams? Who were they? Unless I was looking at something different, I see you beat Robert Morris (I assume that would be the D1 team and not the club team) and you beat Sacred Heart and tied them. Um, ok, I guess they are considered D1 but ....really? If this were the case, Rit4life, do you really want to make a comment that you can beat, in your words, anyone you play in DI?

Re: RIT Women's Hockey 2009-2010

I would think having D-1 teams scheduled would help your team's strength of schedule which is what tournament selection people look at when looking at the whole body of work..so going 3-0 against D1 teams last year, we totally got screwed with the ncaa tourney so let's schedule some D1 teams and show the ncaa we can beat anyone we play, provided we play well enough to beat them.

As for moving to D1, the sooner we can play in tourneys, etc would be 2013, if i remember the rule correctly stating you need to wait 2 years before qualifying, like what the mens' team had to endure.

No.

The Division III selection process only includes (and rightfully so) games you play against Division III teams in your region first off and then in secondary criteria games against the other region.

If you read my previous post on Page 1, I made a note that the only concern I had with us playing D1 teams would be size.. and if we recruited well, I think that could be fixed. I really feel we can beat anyone... as the saying goes, anyone can beat anyone any given day. However, I think we have the team to beat some good D1 teams... take a look at our mens team. we went from D3 to D1 and in the short time we have been in D1, we are having some success, even with the lack of scholarships so who's to say we won't do well with the girls..granted we should wait and see, but I like our chances..

We certainly are getting carried away.....aren't we!!!!! If you sweep Amherst, Elmira and Plattsburgh you can say this, but you still have to prove yourself. You have yet to win the big games in past years (came in 3rd in ECAC West last year) and have not played a dominant team yet this year, so let's cool our jets until you prove you can win the big games. ;)

Re: RIT Women's Hockey 2009-2010

I just hope they save some of those goals for later in the year versus Suny Plattsburgh as well as other ranked opponents. In light of recent success over the teams in our conferences, I feel its worth looking into moving into D-1 ASAP (which I know is currently being considered by the AD).
4Life

Come on, really? RIT is a successful program, but I wouldn't pull the "ASAP" card until after the tigers make it to the NCAA tournament. The ECAC West is a pretty weak conference once you take away the games against Platty and Elmira, and unfortunately you can't fight geography. A 17-1 buttkicking of a bottom feeder that played shorthanded for over 2 periods means nothing more than 2 points in the standings. If they can bring that kind of heat against the big dogs, then by all means, let's talk about a D1 move.

Re: RIT Women's Hockey 2009-2010

I felt bad for Potsdam yesterday. They came out looking like they'd rather be on the bus heading for home. I've never seen a team play so listlessly. Which surprised me considering how close the game really was on Friday, despite what the score showed.

On the subject of D1, I think the RIT Women's program would make a competitive addition to D1 hockey, however as others are saying, they need to win the big games first. Last year's playoff showing in Elmira was miserable. Adding tougher D1 teams to the schedule would really go a long way towards gauging playoff competitiveness. Steamrolling the playoffs this year would really help the Lady Tigers case for a D1 move.

Re: RIT Women's Hockey 2009-2010

However, I think we have the team to beat some good D1 teams.

Our team is good, and no offense to them but we are just barely able to pull off wins against mid to lower DI teams. We're good but if we played someone like Mercyhurst or Wisconsin we would get rocked.

Also keep in mind that RIT is playing in the weakest D-I conference on the men's side. They have done pretty well so far but don't forget they've choked away the NCAA Tourney playing on home ice basically at the Blue Cross the last two years.

Most of the teams the RIT men's team plays either don't offer scholarships for their hockey team either or don't care about their hockey program and for the most part the top D-III teams could give most of the Atlantic Hockey teams good games.

Re: RIT Women's Hockey 2009-2010

Sorry, but I'm missing something here. Winning 17 - 1 seems a bit excessive. Too say that the other team was 'listless' or that they played 'short handed' are less than accountable reasons. If they were completely 'listless' and played with only 3 skaters, is it necessary to throw 78 pucks at their net, 30 of them in the 3rd Period ? Frankly, it is you and not they who should feel embarrassed.

Yes, you are very much missing something. The Lady Tigers were barely skating, especially in the third period. The top line spent much less time on the ice. If Potsdam wanted to play, they very well could have. And they definitely did on Friday. It is a mystery to me where they went on Saturday. It's not hard to throw 74* shots on net when your opponent doesn't even clear the zone and takes tons of lazy penalties.

We have nothing to be embarrassed about. We almost gave up cheering entirely after the 10th goal because we felt bad. Pucks were going in off of dump-ins and lobs for line changes. Potsdam's skaters hung their goaltenders out to dry and it was depressing. Zero shots on goal in the 3rd period was definitely not on the Lady Tigers, considering the ice looked practically fresh at the Tigers end of the ice.

Short of telling the Tigers to never enter the Potsdam zone, there is really no way to fault them, because not entering the zone is exactly what it would have taken to even give Potsdam a chance on Saturday.

to take a quote from one of the mighty ducks movies which im sure you all probably know.. " it's not worth winning if you can't win big."

If you have to resort to quoting from Mighty Duck's movies to justify this behaviour, then you have some REAL issues!!DII hockey in general suffered because of this one game...WHOEVER is to blame!

I'm lost as to what kind of behavior was unacceptable. Are you suggesting that the winning team simply stop playing because their opponents decided not to show up? Please, come off it.

I agree with this, and I think anyone at the game would. I think it is an unreasonable request to ask the players to not play to their capabilities just because they are ahead. It was a good time for coach to play our 2nd, 3rd, and 4th lines and get those players some ice time, and like mentioned, the first line did get less time in the 3rd.

After the game, both head coaches had a pretty (considerably) lengthy discussion at center ice. I would be interested to know if RIT's coach was getting criticized for the "running up the score."

A lengthy discussion?

If it had of been me there would have been 3 hits. Me hitting the RIT coach, him hitting the ice and the ambulance hitting 60.

Re: RIT Women's Hockey 2009-2010

I heard from a reliable source that there was something verbally inappropriate said on the ice between two players that resulted in the RIT coach giving his players the go ahead to run things up...and that's all I'm saying about that...ask the coach if you want the full story,

Re: RIT Women's Hockey 2009-2010

I'm sorry, 16 penalties for 43 minutes seems excessive...tell Potsdam to be more sportsmanlike and they wouldn't end up in the penalty kill position. 8 RIT goals were scored at full strength. Its amazing what could happen when you have 5 skaters on the ice.

Another parent living their dream through their child............. Please...it would be more embarrassing to implement a mercy rule for teams like this...
