>> RIT Tigers Offseason 2012: Reloading and working on the 'Polisseum' <<

A flattering article about Tanev. Discusses his time at RIT, the Frozen Four run, and suggests that he might be a permanent member of the Canucks' roster this season:

Maybe Garrison will teach him a thing or two about slapshots.

Could it have anything to do with assuring that aid isn't preferentially doled out to international students (or whatever that problem was that some D3 schools got in trouble for recently)?

Or maybe just a coincidence?

I've got nothing...

I'm guessing coincendence. I recall that RIT was able to get a good amount of international students.

RIT should not have trouble with the International aid scandal that is rocking D-III. Most of the problem here comes from schools giving more of these aids packages to student athletes then to regular students coming in. It really just more evidence of the NCAA being sticklers on rules to a ridiculous degree. Oswego is a perfect example. What happen there is the school arrange to award these packages to something like 12 international student athletes and another 12 to regular international students (I do not know the number off hand but it was even). What ended up happening something like 2 or 3 of the regular international students did not show up, they changed their minds and went somewhere else at the last minute. I think this is more likely to happen at a small D-III school then a private school like RIT. If anything RIT should have learned to make sure they offer more of this aid to regular students than student athletes just in case some do not show up. It should be noted that NCAA is not on a big witch hunt. Some trusted sources of mine really indicated that some schools like SUNY Geneso was indeed dirty. Also it did not surprise me that Manhattanville was slapped, we knew they were dirty back when RIT was playing them in the D-II days.

I think actually the ratio of US to Canadian change is a good sign that RIT is moving up in the D-I world. Unlike D-III many of the better D-I players are Americans because more of the top Canadian players end up going major jrs. If you checked the rosters or a lot of traditional power houses in D-I hockey you will find mostly Americans. What has been impressive is that in the last couple of years we have seen more Canadian players from US Colleges in the World Jrs. However it still a small number...

Pretty exciting to have an official time and date for the Gene Polisseni Center ground-breaking during homecoming:

Friday, October 19th, at 4pm

:D

The explanation given may be true, but the 1:1 ratio you reference isn't exactly correct. The amount of scholarship money given to the international athletes must be comparable in relative terms to the number of international students overall (grades and qualifications for said scholarships considered as well... of course).

That actually depends on which schools and what areas of the country you're referring to. The schools in the hotbeds of US High School hockey (New England & Minnesota to name a couple) are loaded with US players. The ones outside of these areas such as North Dakota and (previous to now) RIT tend to have more overage Canadiens than the BCs, BUs, and Minnesotas of the world.

I think this thread is fact check as much as a presidential debate, but I will say the fact checkers here have at least some level of integrity. By what the NCAA says about the ratios you would be correct about the 1:1 ratio. But in practice I think they way I put it is more correct, but in all honestly we are really splitting hairs here. I will just stand by source on Oswego and say that basically Oswego was short a 1:1 ratio by 2 or 3 students. I mean if that enough to get them in trouble the ratio pretty much has to been 1:1. Kind of the same with Title IX, the in theory you are correct, its not 1:1, but it practice it really is a different story.

I think your generally right that in some locations you see more Canadian on the team than in others. But in general you see the best players mainly from the USA with some exceptions, we have def seen more top notch Canadians in college hockey these days than we use too. What you do not see is teams made up of all most all Canadians, RIT had a few years where I think it was only 3 or 4 Americans. By just looking through most D-I rosters the past couple of years I'd be willing to say that most if not all most all have 10 or more Americans on the team...

Most likely because of the money that Canadians are getting to play in major junior.

So lets get the rumor mill going... any chance Pegula will be in attendance at BCA? He does own the Amerks and is the sole reason PSU will be in town.

Yeah ... and I hear he is dropping the first puck and donating $8.8M to the Polisseni Center.

I heard he'll be in net for PSU in the 2nd period.

He would have started in net but signed up to be Ritchie for the first twenty! Instead of t-shirts, he'll be shooting roll's of Franklin's out of the cannon.

I don't know about that. PSU needed whatever opponents they could get this season. RIT is only one of 12 (possibly 13) AHA opponents on their schedule along with four D-III, and six ACHA opponents. I think anyone that called and wanted them on their schedule would have gotten a game.

I was implying they wouldn't have a team without Pegula.

From what I was told, it is not something major like a ligament and recovery should be quick.

On the positive side, Saracino and Potts are both 100%.
