Re: >>>>> RIT TIGERS - Offseason 2011 - Dreaming About 2011-2012 <<<<<

I wouldn't be surprised if RPI game sells out ahead of time. The SHU series last season was during Thanksgiving break and the crowds were right up there. I can't remember the actual numbers, but there were plenty of people standing.

I would be. The attendance was decent for the last Thanksgiving weekend games, but it was still a long way from selling out. The Corner Crew was especially depleted, and combined with the lack of band made it pretty quiet in there.

I hope that the RPI game does better, but I don't know how much the average fans appreciate the budding RIT vs RPI rivalry.

the budding RIT vs RPI rivalry.
Really?
Two games, both dominated by RPI in 6 years is hardly the makings of a budding rivalry.

I guess it just depends on your definition of "a long way". There were ~ 1700 at both games, which isn't too bad for a holiday weekend when school's not in session. I know on the Saturday (I don't think I went on Friday), the seats were all full and there were people standing. If the lack of enthusiasm and noise is your barometer, then you're right. I was just looking at the number of fannies in the seats, which would be JRZ Devils' concern as to whether there would still be tickets available. FWIW, I don't necessarily think it will sell out ahead of time, but I just wouldn't be surprised if it did. And remember, there could be a bump in # of visitor fans at an RPI game in Rochester as opposed to an SHU game. There are RPI alums from this area that have never had the opportunity to see their team play in Rochester before (my wife, for one).

Of Course, we both have three letters and start with R. That's good enough for me.

Not to mention the countless number of times RPI has been mistaken for RIT, especially around here.

I'm a little doubtful of RPI's travel for this one, given attendance hadn't been all that good at our tournament as of late. We generally travel well, though, and I wouldn't be surprised if the Finger Lakes folks shoot up for the game. I know I'm taking a trip down 104 (and down a little).

Can we now talk about the RPI game within a month of a game, this has got to be the most talked about NC game during the offseason on the message board in RIT history....

I believe RIT tends to push the Thanksgiving weelemd game as a Youth Hockey weekend. It's a great way to get them to a DI hockey game and the crowd may not be as rowdy with the students away.

After a whole six posts?
And of those six posts, exactly none of them actually talked about the RPI vs. RIT hockey game itself.

Well in terms of butts in seats you may be correct. As someone in the corner crew though, Ritter seemed dead to me, and the lack of band made it even more noticeable.

And as far as a rivalry, I think that our proximity and the fact that people often confuse us is enough of a basis for a rivalry, and we certainly need some healthy non-conf rivals.

I think it's very rare that you "pick" rivals. Rivals sort of just happen due to things that happen during the course of a game. If it wern't for what happened a few years ago we wouldnt hate Canisius. If it wern't for Air Force and us always being at the top of the AHA and duking it out in the playoffs we wouldn't view them as a "rival" of sorts.

Not so for us old-timers. RIT and Canisius were long time ECAC West rivals and over the course of a number of years played intense OT games (most of which RIT won) in the ECAC-W Semi-Finals more than a couple times. Even if you go way back, a number of us remember going out to Nichols Prep to watch the Tigers beat up the Griffs in front of a couple hundred RIT fans and a couple Canisius fans (and one seriously cool outdated Zamboni:)). The one true drawback to that "rivalry" is that as close in talent level as the teams ever got, Canisius still rarely ever won. The one reason that despite the fact that I have for a long time "hated" them, I still have a hard time getting too excited over the RIT-CC D-I "rivalry", is the fact that RIT rarely ever loses to them.

I would agree about Canisius for RIT. Canisius seems to want a rivalry with RIT, but the Tigers generally win the games. I would say RIT's biggest rival is Air Force because they have been evenly matched and have been the top two teams in the league. If the Tigers could win some games against Niagara that would be a better rivalry.

Sorry to hijack the thread and change the subject, but. I had the pleasure of seeing an RIT game when in Rochester and Geneseo in January. I posted here for info, and got several super replies, and an invite to come visit the Corner Crew. Of course, that thread and conversation is LONG gone. But in the conversation, I was asked by someone why the heck I was coming to Rochester, and the short answer was because I work for a band that was playing there. There were several posters who then commented that they'd heard my band, The Elders. Anyway, I wanted to invite those posters to come see me in MY environment when we play in Syracuse next month at the Syracuse Irish Fest, I have a comp CD for you to thank you for all your hospitality when we were in Rochester!

When, exactly? Yes, he's posted on here a few times, but has rarely even referenced the RIT v RPI game. There was a brief note of it being on the schedule back in April or May and another reference back in June to the schools' bands at the game last year... and that was it.
Stop trying to scare off "outsiders":p. All are welcome to post in "our" thread... as long as they're not an a**, of course. ;)
