Re: >>>>> RIT TIGERS - Offseason 2011 - Dreaming About 2011-2012 <<<<<

If an opening were to come about in ECAC, would RIT look at it? I imagine they would. Would they be invited?

Yes and yes (IMHO)!
I think the only way RIT moves is an ECAC opening or that the Ivies split off to get another autobid and RIT joins in with their Liberty League brethren (+Colgate and/or Qpac and/or Army).

I have no inside info (or info at all!), but I could see the ECAC split happening if the hockey world moves to small conferences to maximize autobids. All the teams are stable, so two small leagues could be advantageous to all.

I can't even imagine why Hockey East would admit Notre Dame. They complain about having to travel to New York; traveling to Indiana once a year would be torturous.

That and WMU would probably try to follow into Hockey East... and I don't think Hockey East would want that.

That's why I think Hockey East would look at a Qpac or UConn (but only if they were serious about hockey, which they are not).

Notre Dame brings name recognition, which while the top teams don't need for a draw, the Merrimack, Lowell, UMass, etc crowd could use.

Unfortunately that would leave WMU out to dry and I don't foresee that happening.

I don't see what WMU brings to the Hockey East table. They had 1 good year. The just lost their head coach to the NHL. They are a MAC school, so it's not like they have major name recognition. Notre Dame and Hockey East doesn't need them.

However it seems like the two will act as one and the same, and you don't get one without the other.

DISCLAIMER: I am an RPI fan, this discussion has been happening on the RPI thread and my viewpoint happens to line up with most of those posters (although I don't believe that RPI is as much of a slam-dunk to be the 12th team as most of them), but my talking points / arguments have pretty much become an amalgamated version of my team's fans.
If ND stays in the west, the east could breathe a sigh of relief and not change a thing if they so choose.
Scuttlebutt says that HEA is recruiting Notre Dame, and not just in a "Hey, we see you over there, it'd be cool if you join us, but if you don't want to, that's cool, too!" way, either.
but I could see the ECAC split happening if the hockey world moves to small conferences to maximize autobids. All the teams are stable, so two small leagues could be advantageous to all.
Doubtful. The only reason the Ivies would want the split is if they weren't winning the autobid. The last time a non-Ivy won the autobid from the ECAC was in 2007 to a red-hot Clarkson team and 2001 before that. They're happy and content now and I don't imagine any of them upsetting the apple cart.
I can't even imagine why Hockey East would admit Notre Dame. They complain about having to travel to New York; traveling to Indiana once a year would be torturous.
It's once every other year. (The current proposed schedule that is floating around is similar to the ECAC's 22-game schedule, but without the travel partners (obviously). It would be a home-and-home with each team, except for Notre Dame, where you would alternate two-away, two-home.) And, Notre Dame brings name recognition and an up-and-coming program who can help raise the HEA's profile (not that they need their profile raised, but they need to look like they're striving to keep up with the Big 10 and the non-WCHA with recruits) and it allows them to expand, which they're apparently trying to do.
That and WMU would probably try to follow into Hockey East... and I don't think Hockey East would want that.
Try. Key word.
That's why I think Hockey East would look at a Qpac
No history, arena is too small, not enough fans.
or UConn (but only if they were serious about hockey, which they are not).
You answered your own question on that one.

This. This. Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand.... this.

If Notre Dame goes west, they probably bring WMU with them. If they go east, it's HEA's decision. JMO.

burgie, Don't disagree with you here, but you could look at it from the side of the other teams (which haven't won an autobid that often) and maybe they want to split from the Ivies? Anyway, if RPI goes to HEA ... I'm sure RIT wouldn't mind becoming Union's travel partner in the ECAC. Sounds like a nice step for both the "R" schools.

Likely, Union would become Colgate's travel partner, and you'd travel with Cornell (nice little trip down NY 96). Remember that with travel partners, you play a home/home with them. This is a bus league.

This makes no sense. If the non-Ives can't compete in the ECAC they certainly won't compete any better in the HE.

Obviously you haven't seen too many games in the clutch-and-grab (-Yale and -RPI) ECAC. RPI did a heck of a lot better non-conference than in the league. I won't bring up the other factors that were discussed time and time again this past year that would not only give us reason to want to leave, but for the league to say "Good Riddance". Not to mention, you're talking about the only ECAC non-ivy with national championships. You could have said the exact same thing about UVM when they broke off the same you came on, and they aren't doing too badly for themselves.

Wrong. I saw all of the ECAC teams this past season due to my season tickets at Cornell. With that being said I thought it was obvious that I wasn't specifically talking about RPI, but the non-ives in general. Hence, I said "non-ives". And one decent season from RPI against the HE doesn't make is the norm (maybe RPI is good against HE, I'm not going to bother to look it up as I really don't care).

I still stand that most of the ECAC would not far well in the HE on a year-in, year-out basis.

My post seems to have vanished.

What I meant was that they would split and form a new league, not join HE. (Only RPI was discussed above as a possible move to HE.)

And FlagDude, I like the partnering with Cornell thing. I only suggested Union because they would be left alone if RPI bolted and it seemed close enough for a reasonable home&home bust trip.

We know what you meant with the split, and it doesn't benefit a single current member of the ECAC. That's why they're not going to do it, and that's why it's being left out of the discussion.

Got it. I see what you were driving at now. Yeah, I guess that would make sense for the weaklings of the ECAC.

I guess on the bright side we wouldn't have to put up with your diving matches at Lynah Natatorium. :D

I show no jealousy towards a person that finds clutch and grab to be exciting. ;)
