Re: >>>>> RIT TIGERS - Offseason 2011 - Dreaming About 2011-2012 <<<<<

Shane had a great year last year, but as unfair as this may sound RIT fall short of the goal.

Due to a 1-0 loss against a goalie that made 40 saves. It happens. Shane IS the starting goaltender until someone goes and TAKES the job from him (IMHO). He was the best goaltender in the conference and had at least as good of a season as Jared had in 09-10, the year many were using as a benchmark.

I agree with Tom (good god what is the world coming to???), I think an open competition is good for the goaltenders. Madolora had a good season last year, but if someone else is better early then play'em. I think Madolora has an edge because Wilson knows most likely what to expect from him, but that shouldn't get the guy a free pass to be the #1.

What?
No
What?
That makes no sense and is in no way what I was saying. I was responding to someone saying that we're not likely to see a conference opponent for Homecoming because of a preference for the "big names" for that game. My point was that relatively speaking, they really haven't brought in a "big-name" program yet, especially to the general college sports fans that don't understand the hockey landscape like us 500-1000 die hards do. UML was the best example of my point since they are really in no way a big-name program even though they are an out of conference Big-4 team. Air Force, UConn, Army, Niagara, and Canisius could all generate at least as much interest to the casual fan as UML can.

Yeah except we sold out the arena vs. UML, so do we really need a "bigger" program?

Didn't we play Cornell at the BCA? That's a big name in and out of hockey and we didn't sell that game out. We sold out the BCA this past season because of RIT, not our opponent. RIT did a great job of promoting the homecoming game this past year and it didn't hurt that we went to the Frozen Four which generated a buzz in Rochester and no doubt brought some fans to the game. I know that my friends who had never been to an RIT game wanted to go to the BCA game solely because they were excited about seeing a great college hockey team that made it to the Frozen Four.

I don't disagree with that. I didn't say anything to the contrary.
Of course, as has just been stated, there were many factors that helped sell that game out last year, the least of which was the opponent.

Yes, they did bring Cornell in. I neglected to include them, mostly because I was only thinking back a few years and only really including homecoming weekend games. Cornell would definitely be the biggest of names that they have brought to town... although outside of hockey (and lacrosse, maybe), they are only a "big-name" due to their superior academic reputation and being and Ivy League school rather than being any sort of athletic powerhouse. The lack of crowd size was probably due to a lack of marketing of the game back before there really was any buzz about RIT hockey, especially compared to the all-out blitz of advertising they put on the last couple seasons when the buzz was dramatically increasing.

The crowd at the Cornell game was a record for RIT hockey at just over 5K.....

As with most sports teams, when they start to get hot, the crowds start getting larger if the teams venue allows for it. You could bring in almost anybody for BCW and still get a pretty good crowd because of the marketing around it. The same could be said for non-BCW OOC games where if the word gets out, the crowds will show up.

Imagine if we brought in Denver or UNH, I think the interest would be quite high and maybe even make it to CBSCollegeSports television.

The question is, with the new barn coming in the near future, do they forgo the BCA and just settle for the 4 to 6k (guessing here) crowd and play on the home ice?

Found this interesting comment from 2007 written after that Cornell game:

Lots of penalty time for our Tigers, but they came through. After Cornell pulled their goalie in the 3rd quarter to put another man out on the ice, the Tigers broke away and scored their 4th goal of the evening, with only 4:30 left on the clock. If the games are that intense for the rest of the season, I think we're going to shake things up in the world of DI hockey.

How right she was when she said this....

Looks like Ruby wasn't drafted. Not sure if that's a net positive or a net negative. =)

I'm just curious... how many quarters are there in a hockey game? :D

Gives him all the motivation to prove the NHL scouts wrong in the coming years

Thats what i'd say.
There were enough goalies picked that he could have been. My guess would be that he wasn't drafted likely because he is older than a lot of the 17-18 year olds. Being 20 and not playing in the CHL or a higher league was probably the deterring factor.
Like Blazer says, maybe he goes into RIT with a chip on his shoulder.

On other news, lots of smoke about the possibility of Eaves leaving Wisconsin for the NHL (possibly my Devs!). This could be interesting.

I know we have had the Madolora vs Ruby debate before, but it's absolutely Madolora's job to lose. The numbers he put up last year were better than any year DeMike ever had, and our failure to make it as far absolutely can't be put on him after a 1-0 lose at BCA.

The others will get starts early in the year as always, but Madolora's a lock for #1.

An unholy alliance has been created. Guys don't get me wrong, in my mind Madolora is the front runner, but I think wanye goes into this with an open mind. As I said I made an unfair statement about the AHA Championship game. However that is just motovation for Shane. Tip your hat to what Trof did in nets, but get you butt motovated to beat him...

The AHL website has a press release (http://theahl.com/wolves-canucks-announce-affiliation-deal-p171415) announcing the agreement and they mention Burrows, Kessler, and Tanev as examples of the Canucks successful emphasis on development of prospects. I just have this feeling that Tanev has seen the last of the AHL. The question still remains as to whether or not being a 5-6-7 defenseman in the NHL vs being a 1-2 in the AHL next year will be better for his overall development. Hopefully he will stay in Vancouver, and over the course of the year get the chance to expand his game a little. They did a great job of protecting him by limiting his game to a pretty much stay-at-home D. Sure should be interesting for him next fall.

The job is Shane's to lose. But I figure Watson will be better than last year, and Rudy certainly appears to have the skills. So certainly the competition for playing time will be fierce. Couple that with some earlier than usual conference games, and it makes for an interesting situation indeed.

As for Tanev, I think learning at the NHL level is always better. The coaches are better, and the competition he is playing against is better.

Not to mention that he might enjoy the income a little better as well! ;)

Got that right, 900K is a whole lot better than 90K.

Not mention, Vancouver is a lot nicer than Chicago.

As it is right now with Erhoff's rights being traded away, The Nucks have Bieksa, Hamhuis, Edler, Ballard and Rome under contract next year. Both Salo and Alberts are UFA's, and i'd bet they probably let Alberts go, maybe re-sign Salo at a lower hit since he has been injury prone(with Erhoff's departrure). I'd say that he has jumped Rome, and Tanev played well with Ballard(however Ballard played horrible without Tanev) it is likely Chris can be a lock at the #5/6 spot with possibility to jump to the top 4 and get some PP time.

Now, you may see that other D men in the A are ready to jump and be in the mix, but with the Nucks likely being up against the cap after other UFA signings, Tanev is the only one that does not have a bonus. The other guys (Connauton, Rodin, Ellington, Sauve, Anderson) all have bonuses of over $150k.

There are still a few UFA D-men they may look at obviously, but you never know. Looks to me that he will be with the Big club next year.
