I understand doing it against the OOC teams with bigger names to draw attention.

Colgate (Patriot League), St. Lawrence (D-III), and UMass-Lowell (D-II) are big names? Air Force or Army would be bigger names than any of them, and Niagara or Canisius would have at least as much regional proximity appeal.

We are talking hockey, right? I would consider St. Lawrence a much bigger name than Army or Air Force. I would put Niagara, Colgate and Air Force on par with each other and Canisius and Lowell lower than the rest.

If it makes you feel any better, our band probably won't be there, either. To be honest, I was (and still am) quite surprised your band even went to Troy last year. Usually we only get a few ECAC bands in.

We love to travel :D we try and go anywhere that's reasonably close. Canisius actually forbid us from going to "their" rink :D

I still laugh about the time they forbid RIT's band from coming, then rented a high school band to play for them.

Niagara rented us once.

I didn't know you could forbid bands from showing up according to NCAA rules. I thought you had to reserve 25 free tickets, but could deny a higher number.

There's some loophole regarding not having your own band, or something like that. I wish we could find an exact quotation somewhere.

Then why hasn't Union ever barred our band from showing up? Or SLU, for that matter?

EDIT: I don't see it in the NCAA rules; perhaps it's a league determination, which would explain why you have it and we don't.

They're classier?

Thanks for the great laugh! :D

But in all seriousness, it seems dumb to bar the bands. That's one of the things that makes college sports so enjoyable.

Having the bands is an amazing experience. Canisius gets embarrassed enough at the "home of the bengals", especially when the RIT Fans fill our section and the Canisius faithful are less than the fans at the Elmira/Buff st women's game before.

Sounds like whenever we go to play Brown. :D But that's one thing I do like to see in hockey: the D-III schools playing D-I with a large following. Union doesn't necessarily have that yet (unless they're playing RPI) but they're getting better, Clarkson has a good following and rich history, SLU is decent as well, and Colorado College with very good town support (World Arena is off campus).

I realize that within college hockey, those programs are names, to a point. But when I hear someone use the term "big-name" it usually seems to mean the programs that are well known to the general public and students who don't know that much about college hockey and would recognize the names, whether or not they're actually good hockey programs. The marketing of the BCA games has to focus on such fans since the goal is to draw ~8,000 more fans than normally attend games. I'd be willing to bet that at least 6,000 or more of those additional fans have little if any clue that schools like RPI, Clarkson, St. Lawrence, Colorado College, Minnesota-Duluth, etc. have historically successful and well respected D-I hockey programs, while schools like Ohio State have historically unsuccessful programs.

The NHL schedule came out today: the Canucks will be in Colorado on Feb 4 at noon- conveniently 6 hours before Air Force hosts RIT(1-1.5 hrs away). If Tanev breaks into the top 6 next season, it would be quite fun to go to both!

It would...if you could get to Colorado.

I hate to sound like I'm agreeing with Matt...

BUT....

Wait a second...

Are you telling me that many people recongize the name UMASS-Lowell and that is why the game sold out????

The job is still Madoloras to lose though.

I am not necessarily disagreeing with you. I think Shane will be thought of as the #1. But I think you have to be open with a talent like this coming in, let some training camp time go by before picking a #1.

Shane had a great year last year, but as unfair as this may sound RIT fall short of the goal. I am not blaming Shane or anyone else for that matter, but it should be prime motivation for this season. I like to think all options are on Wilson's table....

I agree with you Tom. The battle for that top spot is gonna be huge. All three are gonna be capable of taking it.

As for RIT falling short of the goal, the defense was pretty green which led to shots that led to goals being taken that shouldn't of. With what we lost the previous season I was pleasntly surprised at how well the team did this season. This season I'm worried about scoring, so I guess we'll see what happens and who steps up.

What?
No
What?
That makes no sense and is in no way what I was saying. I was responding to someone saying that we're not likely to see a conference opponent for Homecoming because of a preference for the "big names" for that game. My point was that relatively speaking, they really haven't brought in a "big-name" program yet, especially to the general college sports fans that don't understand the hockey landscape like us 500-1000 die hards do. UML was the best example of my point since they are really in no way a big-name program even though they are an out of conference Big-4 team. Air Force, UConn, Army, Niagara, and Canisius could all generate at least as much interest to the casual fan as UML can.
