>>>RIT Tigers 2022-2023 Season<<<

Conference tournament or bust if we want to go to the NCAA's, now. Certainly we've got a nice lead heading back into conference play.

Come now. Surely two losses to a top-5 team won't single-handedly tank our chances? Just playing PSU helps our SOS, for instance.

I ran some simulations on collegehockeynews before the series. A split here and sweep against ASU would have made them go something like 12-2 in conference the rest of the year to be on the bubble. I'll look later but I don't think they have a chance now. Especially since needing an at large bid would mean at least one more loss in conference automatically. Remember they have to be 14th or better at minimum because there's no other AHA team or CCHA team in the top 16.

EDIT: So, literally winning all their games in regulation would have them at 8th entering the playoffs. They'd almost certainly probably be fine in that spot even adding a conference loss (or even two if they lose a best of three series, which everything is this year until the final). Outside of that....a split vs. Arizona State and just going to OT twice in conference drops them to 11th. Split vs. ASU and lose one game in conference with an OT win in conference and they're already down to 14th. With 2 auto bids going to teams below them and a loss coming in the playoffs they'd almost certainly be out. Sweep ASU and lose two conference games with one OTW and they're also all the way down to 14th. And that's with the losses coming to good Atlantic Hockey teams. A loss to someone like Bentley or another one to Air Force would be even more catastrophic because of the way RPI works (RIT's RPI doesn't go down after beating the dregs of AHA only because the rules explicitly don't allow it to)

So no, I don't think an at large bid is realistic. On the fringes of possibility, sure. But even matching their outstanding in conference play from the first half would mean dropping 8 points in those 16 conference games (so 2 L's and 2 OTW's) and even with a sweep of ASU with both games regulation wins that likely puts them on the wrong side of the bubble after a playoff loss. Hockey's a fluky game. I don't think this team is so overwhelmingly dominant that they can run the table (and almost all in regulation, because that matters), even if they are done with SHU and AIC this year.

A little bit surprised to see them back at #20 after Friday's tie (pleasantly, obviously). I was at the Saturday game and it was one of the tighter, low scoring chance games I've ever been to at any level. I have to imagine that was the focus after the sloppy night Friday night. Scarfone was solid, obviously, but he didn't ever really have to be any more than that - great effort blocking shots on the few turnovers that did happen.

Now to Arizona State, then for the home stretch. No reason to not win the conference with all of their remaining conference series against teams in the bottom half of the league.

I'm shocked after their showing against Penn State. Delightfully shocked. This season is still the best we have had since being in D1 during regular season (I think). And to think, RIT's scholarships haven't really kicked into full swing yet. Watch out, RIT hockey is back after a 10-year hiatus!

After a good run this season, I can see some really good recruits coming RIT's way!

What, back-to-back AHA championships in 2015 and 16 along with an NCAA Tournament win aren't good enough?

I mean, it will be nice to get back into the regular season championship column if they can manage to do so - those teams were talented enough to do so but a slow start with a young team in 2014-15 doomed them in that regular season and the injury bug, IIRC, doomed them in 2015-16 (isn't that the year they had to start their club goalie for a handful of games?)

I would say in normal circumstances a team that has the capability of making noise in the national tournament should probably be winning Atlantic Hockey as well.

EDIT: Found this fun fact scrolling through wikipedia. With a conference title this year, RIT will again have the most regular season titles among all the Atlantic Hockey teams, with 5 (AIC winning the last 4 will be 2nd with 4). Air Force is far and away ahead in playoff championships, with 7 (RIT and AIC have 3 each), and RIT and Air Force are tied with 3 NCAA wins (AIC and Holy Cross have 1 each)

I believe Chris Duclair is Anthony Duclair's brother (currently with the Florida Panthers, 470 NHL games). Just a random fun fact.

I'm kinda curious if these are the same leagues we've historically recruited from, or if we've been able to move up a level, so to speak, with the ability to give scholarships. Or even if we can get higher tier guys from the same leagues....time will tell I suppose. Now that they give scholarships its hard to think they wouldn't have a recruiting advantage over a lot of the rest of the conference with their facilities and fan base. Why would you want to play in front of 500 at home when you can play in front of 2500 every night (and 10,000 once a year!)

If AIC is any indication what scholarships will do for a program, RIT is about to explode. RIT has been underperforming for years for its potential. RIT is a sleeping giant. I knew scholarships hindered RITs ability to recruit. RIT has the barn, the fans and the coaching staff. Look how far Air Force has fallen, once our fierce rivals.

Thinnest skinned officials ever (well, aside from that gem from our conference who shall not be named) :shakehead:

Not particularly competent either. Expected better from big 10 officials.

Pretty spectacular performance from the boys so far though.

EDIT: I will say their ability to look at video is well above the Atlantic Hockey boys though

Sacred Heart University Opens New $75 Million Hockey Arena – NBC Connecticut

I can't help but feel a little jealous. Yes, the Gene Polisseni Center is nice, but it falls short of expectations. Maybe I'm just entitled after seeing the initial renderings around 13-14 years ago. This new sacred heart arena is absolutely gorgeous. Maybe if the seats were orange, it would be more appealing. Am I off the mark?

Early promotional render of the Gene Polisseni Center. What happened? : rit (reddit.com)

Classless comments by the ASU radio team near the end of the game, suggesting they "take out" Drackett with the game decided.

Awesome sweep especially the way this one played out. Would have been easy to pack it in down 2-0 and when ASU scored in the 3rd, but they kept fighting. This might not be as strong of an ASU team as in past years, but it's still a heck of a road sweep.

Drackett!? What year is it?! :)
Agree, totally classless. Corner Crew discord was rioting.

Oof, old man moment. You'll have to forgive me I just hit 40 ;-). It really would have been a trick to take out Drackett all the way in Jacksonville.

Nice game for Matthews in net Saturday, especially down the stretch.

I did a double take when I heard it! Still can't believe he said that

The SHU arena has more character, I agree - the hanging center-ice video board & all the windows really add to it.

I didn't hear it, so don't know the context. Could it be possible he meant that the starting goalie should be removed from the game, and not necessarily "taken out"? I don't know what their play-by-play team is like, but it seems unlikely a team at this level would call for attacking the other team's goalie out loud. Maybe just hopeful thinking.

Agreed, from a visual standpoint. Looks as drab as it could possibly be. Lots and lots of Grey, white and black... now that's inspiring.
The arena is a huge upgrade from Ritter in many aspects, but not that one. Aside from the Tiger logo at center ice, there's not much built into the aesthetics that screams "This is OUR HOUSE"
... But then again, RIT also didn't have $75 million to spend on it either.

No it was in direct response to the scrum that happened near the end of the game after the empty net goal. He said something around the lines of "I don't blame them, maybe they should take a run at the goalie too, take him out for the game" or something along those lines (and keep in mind ASU got an extra major/misconduct in the scrum).

I mean, it's a 2 goal lead with 24 seconds left, no one's changing out their starting goalie voluntarily unless the other team is really gooning it up and they fear for his health, and if it's gotten to that point it's already gone too far. Plus the other couple of guys on here and apparently the CC discord heard the same thing. =/

It's certainly disappointing - especially since I thought they were actually pretty good most of the weekend - obviously they were ASU centric but they gave the Tigers credit where it was due; I remember them specifically calling out Gonzalves in the 1st intermission Friday night as someone who really impressed them. I think the frustration of their long losing streak got to them (as well as the team in that scrum) a little bit there at the end and the color guy made an unfortunate comment.
