Re: >>>>>>>>> RIT Tigers 2015-16 Regular season thread. On the prowl again

After watching the Quinnipiac/Lowell tilt, I feel better about RIT's performance on Saturday. Lowell was struggling the same way RIT was. Says alot about how well QU is playing their game right now. They certainly play out of their end very well. There were times I felt RIT was moving the puck too slowly. It was probably more that QU was playing D that well. If they could have gotten a goal in the 2nd I felt it would have made the 3rd more interesting. Instead, QU gets the 2nd goal and the story wrote itself after that.

After watching the Quinnipiac/Lowell tilt, I feel better about RIT's performance on Saturday.

And while Lowell did muster one goal, they only had a total of 15 shots on goal to RIT's 27 yesterday. As a friend said to me today about Q, they're not No. 1 for nothing.

I still can't believe nothing went in for RIT yesterday. Garteig was awesome yesterday. RIT was definitely the tougher game for Q this weekend.

As I said elsewhere, RIT wasn't going to be the last team to lose to QU this year; we just happened to be the first (in the tournament). There's no shame in losing to a 1 seed in a regional final or in the Frozen Four, so there shouldn't be any in losing to one in the first round, either.

Our solution to advancing further in the tournament, then, must be to gain higher seeding. Against a 2 or 3 seed we'll have a better chance of advancing to the regional finals.

Re: >>>>>>>>> RIT Tigers 2015-16 Regular season thread. On the prowl again

I'm proud of how RIT played against Quinnipiac. Those first 2 periods may have been the best they played all year. It makes it fun to look forward to next year.

As for how to get better seeding to improve chances to make it farther in the tournament, I think a couple things have to happen:
1. Win a couple non-conference games. They have some great opportunities for some big wins with Providence and Bowling Green. Based strictly at last year's records, the RPI, Union, and UConn games I think will be toss-ups.
2. Have a strong conference season. For any Atlantic Hockey team to not be seeded 4 in the region, I think they would need to dominate the conference season. They especially cannot afford to give away points to the bottom of the league. I'd be curious if getting the 3 points that RIT lost out on with Amato would have given RIT enough points to pass Ferris State in the pairwise,
3. The conference as a whole needs to win some OOC games. Winning under 25% of those games simply does not help improve seeding.

The only way to get better seeding in the tournament is to get to 12th or higher in the PWR. Even if RIT was above Ferris State, they still would have been a 4 seed. I don't think a couple of non-con wins against top teams would be enough for any Atlantic Hockey team. The conference itself just isn't strong enough.

It would have been close. RoMo was ahead of Ferris in the PWR; had they won the AHC title they would have been the 15 seed.

Stifling defense, clogging up the neutral zone and shooting it back into the Tigers and UML zones caused the teams to wilt going into the 2nd and 3rd periods. Tigers held up longer but in the end, Q wore out both teams. It will be interesting how the remaining teams will handle that in the FF.

15 seed still plays as the 4 seed in their regional tournament though. The uphill battle doesn't get much easier facing #2 in the country instead of #1.

Re: >>>>>>>>> RIT Tigers 2015-16 Regular season thread. On the prowl again

Because I'm obsessed with statistics, I have been working on a spreadsheet tracking RIT's stats in the Division I era. I thought I'd share some interesting stats now that the season has ended. Hopefully there are a couple other stat nerds out there that will enjoy this...

Individual Stats for this year:
- Josh Mitchell - 30 Assists - 5th All-Time
- Chase Norrish - 8 Goals - 7th All-Time among Defensemen
- Greg Amlong - 7 Goals - 10th All-Time among Defensemen

Josh Mitchell finishes his time with RIT with:
- 90 Assists (3rd All-Time)
- 121 Points (5th All-Time)

Alexander Kuqali finishes his time with RIT with:
- 13 Goals (8th All-Time among Defensemen)
- 46 Assists (5th All-Time among Defensemen)
- 59 Points (6th All-Time among Defensemen)
- 146 PIM (10th All-Time)

Relevant Team Stats:
- 0.890 Save Percentage (Worst in the DI era)
- 27.08 Shots Allowed per Game (2nd Lowest All-Time)

It would appear that our goalies save percentage suffers from lack of work. I would suspect some of that is skewed by the injuries this season.

That is why point #3 is important. OOC win percentage really needs to be at least 40% I would think to have a chance to be a #12.

I Blame Jordan Ruby :D

Holy Cross & RoMo losing a lot of seniors, and Canisius just lost their top scorer to the AHL early.

And now Adam Carlson is leaving Mercyhurst after 1 season. WOW!

It may be like old times with Air Force and RIT. May see two Eastern teams at Blue Cross next year....

Why do you say that? OOC records (as distinct from overall records) don't enter directly into the PWR, do they?

It would appear that our goalies save percentage suffers from lack of work.

Or both stats are artifacts of a defense that gave up a smaller number of higher-quality shots (versus a large number of low-quality shots).

Considering we had Nick Amato start 4 games and get a 0.847 save percentage you are right to assume that. RIT drastically limited shot attempts against Amato and he still let in a ton of shots. Short also played way more games than he would have if Rotolo was healthy, and his save percentage was pretty bad too.

Rotolo's the only one that ended with decent numbers, but he didn't play enough games to float the team average higher.

Nice job with this. One other record for Mitchell is games played with 154. He played in every game all four years. Kuqali was right behind with 153.

Here's the top 10 for Games Played:
1. Josh Mitchell 154
2. Alexander Kuqali 153
T3. Brad McGowan 150
T3. Greg Noyes 150
T3. Adam Hartley 150
T6. Ben Lynch 147
T6. Chris Haltigin 147
T6. Cameron Burt 147
9. Dan Ringwald 146
10. Sean Murphy 144

Games played is one of the few statistics where all-time leaders are all in the D-I era because of the longer schedules.

Powers &8^]

What is important is not so much RIT's OOC record but that of the league's OOC record overall. USCHO's RPI explanation includes this:

Factors involved are 1) the team's winning percentage; 2) the average winning percentage of the team's opponents; 3) the average winning percentage of the team's opponents' opponents. These factors are multiplied by 25%, 21%, and 54% respectively and the contribution of each individual game is weighted by a factor of 1.2 for a road win or home loss and 0.8 for a home win or road loss. In addition, a quality wins bonus based on wins against the top 20 teams is added to a team's RPI.

Atlantic Hockey's winning percentage outside the league is .246 this season. The RPI/PWR is very heavily influenced by that, especially for AHC where 28 of 34 games are against the league.
