If RIT believes in themselves they can do GREAT things! This shows the rest of the league the AHA is HERE and is the most underrated conference in the League.

Good job tonight, Tigers. It's always nice to see Michigan suffer. Also shuts their fans up for at least one night.

Really? C'mon. Go back through this thread and see my comments preceding the game. At least some of us were prepared for this. RIT played well in the latter half of the game, especially Watson, but our goaltending and coverage really stunk. They won as much as we lost. Now... should I say typical MSU..or wait for your results in Minnesota?

Reading through this Mich thread was entertaining. One player called us so-so... either they went off pre season rankings or they don't pay attention to the NCAA world. Whateva..

One player? I didn't catch that. I read a bunch of student/fan blather. I doubt that it was a player, especially on an Mgoblog poster board.

I agree - it was probably fans and students.

Isn't that your first time playing Michigan? If so, I'd like to welcome you guys to the short list of current D-I schools with winning records agains the Wolverines. This makes 5. BTW, three of them are playups.

BTW, question for you guys... is Colavecchia injured? He's on my fantasy team and noticed he was a DND last night.

This first Michigan game was exciting enough on the radio. I can't imagine what it was like in person. You radio guys are going to go hoarse if you don't start controlling yourselves :) Good job relaying the action, especially since there were so many players named Lynch on the ice. BTW, what's the latest on Ben Lynch, and the big hit he took?

I know everyone is anxious to see what happens tonight, and how the teams react to an unexpected come-from-behind game. RIT was in someone else's house, after all.

That makes Michigan 0 and 2 against upstate N.Y. this year. The shock is bound to fade.

Pardoning ignorance regarding upstate NY (Rochester is CLEARLY Western NY), who was the second?

Yes. Out for about a month.

Cornell, who is in neither upstate (according to your definition) or Western.

"Upstate" is anything that isn't "Downstate", which usually means anything in the NYC metropolitan area. WNY is part of Upstate. Ithaca is arguably in WNY, which I usually consider to encompass anything south of Lake Ontario or Lake Erie. (Buffalonians say it's just counties west of the Genesee River, but that's silly.)

The officials converged after the next whistle to talk about the hit (which ironically was by U-M's Kevin Lynch) and determined that the hit was legal. If anything he could have been called for charging I guess. Ben Lynch staggered to the bench, so I bet that the NCAA is going to take another look at that hit to see if there was any contact to the head.

Come one, come all tonight... free magnet schedules.

I still don't understand the hate for Burt. And yes, he still reads this, he tweeted about it last night. There's a reason Burt is RIT's all-time leading scorer, and there's a reason he's one of only a handful of tigers now playing hockey professionally.

Anyways, AWESOME WIN!

P.S - Rochester is "Upstate NY". Upstate is literally everything except the NYC/Long Island area.

I'd consider Ithaca more to be the Southern Tier. They're the 607 area code, are they not?

Upstate, in my definition, is anything north of the southern edge of Lake Ontario extrapolated across the state. Pretty much the Adirondack Park and anything to the north, east, and west.

That's Northern New York. Upstate/Downstate is fully dichotomous; everything is one or the other.

In the 70s and 80s, the D&C had a weekly Sunday magazine called Upstate (it was eventually replaced with Gannett's nationwide USA Weekend). The Evangelical Lutheran Church's Upstate NY Synod has offices in the 716, 585, 315, and 607 area codes. SUNY Upstate Medical University is in Syracuse. Even the NY State Court system identifies every county except the five NYC boroughs, Nassau, and Suffolk as "Upstate".

I've seen occasional colloquial references to your definition, but it's a clear and definite minority.

As for Ithaca, the Southern Tier is part of WNY as well. =)

Some highlights here; they're not in chronological order, but all five RIT goals are there at some point. Turn off the audio if you don't care to hear Red talk about how much his team must have sucked to lose to RIT.

http://www.mgoblue.com/allaccess/?media=340692

Five is the most goals surrendered by Michigan in a season opener since 1991 (most in a season opener at home since 1987). Second time in three years Michigan has gone to OT in their season opener (Mercyhurst tied Michigan 4-4 in 2010).

In other news, apparently we've been rechristened "Eagles". http://www.annarbor.com/sports/mich...rd-period-lead-in-season-opening-loss-to-rit/

Southern Tier for sure, and yes it is the 607 area code. But they are still "upstate".

I still don't understand the hate for Burt. And yes, he still reads this, he tweeted about it last night. There's a reason Burt is RIT's all-time leading scorer, and there's a reason he's one of only a handful of tigers now playing hockey professionally.

I think it is because Burt would, or seemingly would, disappear for long stretches. Both within a game and for several game stretches. Whether it is deserved or not, well I am not sure about that.

That's Northern New York. Upstate/Downstate is fully dichotomous; everything is one or the other.

Exactly

Except for my time in Rochester I have lived in the Ithaca area my whole life and I am sure that the vast majority of people in the area do not think of Ithaca as being WNY. Most would think of it as the Southern Tier or possibly Central NY, but certainly not WNY.
