Re: >> RIT Tigers 2011-12 Part II: Making Some Noise at the House that Roars <<

A little off-topic, but RIT has a women's hockey press conference scheduled for tomorrow morning. Anyone have details, and whether the Corner Crew's presence is desired like it was for the men?

Unless there's a specific request for the Corner Crew to be there, this doesn't seem like the same sort of situation. Invitations have gone out to media with specific parking instructions and it's being held in a smaller space.

I was invited but if you want to come it is in Fireside lounge at 10:30. I don't think they want the full Corner Crew but I am sure a few would be welcome. I would say if you were a regular at the games, come on out.

Matt Garbowsky – There other half of the best line all year for the tigers.
Is Garbowsky a player and a half?
Sorry, just thought I'd pick a nit for fun.

Nice rundown on the returning Tigers. I actually have to agree on a lot of your thoughts. Who'd have thought such a thing? :)

2009-2010: 145 goals scored vs. 90 allowed (granted, the extra games we played in the NCAA playoffs increased the goal total) (28-12-1 record)
Even if you remove the NCAA games, they had 136 goals for and 79 goals against. Still 37 more goals for and 7 fewer goals against than this season.
That's still almost an entire goal per game difference. Wow. Could you imagine how many more wins they could have had with just one more goal per game (on average)?

Too many people can take that the wrong way. It's better in this era to avoid any sort of comment that could be misconstrued.

Ok maybe we've been hanging around Lerchie to long. Ask my wife I've been thinking about that metapher for a while now, but did not mention it till now cause I did want to mention it till after he finished his career. Goof Gosh could we be getting PC in our old age???

Tom you are either getting smart in your old age or I am because I agree with most, in fact almost all, of what you wrote.

A few of my own thoughts....

I think it was an overall down year for the top tier of the AHA more than the goaltending being above and beyond outstanding.

As I reflect the thing I am most disappointed in this season was the play and subsequent drop off of production by the Seniors. Their play was certainly not what I, and I think most of us, expected out of them. Most maddening was the inconsistency.

Another area I was disappointed in was the play of the Freshman. I think Gabrowsky and McGowan had decent first years and I hope they develop into something special. But I was not overwhelmed by them and was certainly not by the remaining three freshman. I had higher hopes for Wilson and Co. to recruit a better class as these guys were the first year to be recruited, with plenty of time, after the Frozen Four appearance. I would have thought that appearance would have helped recruit better players but so far it hasn't. The incoming class next year will certainly cement if the FF appearance had any up side as far as Wilson and Co. ability to recruit better players.

I really decided to do this after Game 1 against Bentley. Really helped myself to figure this teams out. Lets not forget this team might of even over achieved when they lost Saracino and Potts never mind games without Madalora and Mitchell. I had a very brief conversation with Wayne Wilson after Saturday and I really got a sense that he felt like Potts was going to be a consitant goal scorer this year so will be interesting to watch him next year. I don't think we hit the panic button yet, but I told Wayne I don't envy him and his staff cause I think they got a lot of hard work ahead of them. However I am very confident in their ability.

Really tough on the senior class. Yes I think they take a lot of responsbility on inconsistency as upper class men. I thought Taylor McReynolds was better then I expected him to be. Mark Cornacchia and Scott Knowles gave what I expected. As I said I don't think Mads could have given much more. Cameron Burt played well, but just seem to try to do too much at times.

I think it is really telling, Wilson's top line in every playoff game was McGowan, McReynolds, Garbowsky. Pretty much could tell the idea was we are not winning this thing on Offense. Also why I kind of disagree with you on the freshmen. They may have not had the same production that Tyler Brenner and Cameron Burt had as freshmens. However they did not have a 20 goal scorer (Sarazin) playing with them. I think they were fine, but will look for help next year. Can see some growing pains on the defensive side next year, need to get those 30 goals or so back...

...Cameron Burt should have been nicked named the dark knight. He was loved and hated so many different times...

Umm ... no.

Wow.

Tom, do yourself and the world a favor and please come up with a different metaphor/analogy. I get what you are trying to say, I think, but your metaphor is so wrong on so many levels. Speaking to your point, I find it very hard to believe that anyone on this board (or any RIT hockey fan in general) "hated" Cameron Burt.

Weird. Different administration, I know, but still... you'd think the CHA (run by Bob DeGregorio, no less) would want to trumpet this in a fashion similar to the AHA did back then.

Go back to last years thread for RIT hockey. There was some pretty strong stuff in there, hate may be too big of a word, but there was some very negative comment directed toward Mr. Burt and I felt it was unwarranted.

Sorry if you did not like my metapher did not work with you. Guess some people just can not see past certain things...

I tend to ignore injuries on the overall performance of the team as they are simply part of sports. The team needs to overcome them, period.

Certainly no panic button is being hit by me at this time. Yet. ;)

Yeah, I am tough on them. And I should have mentioned I was strictly speaking about the skaters not Mads. He did what was expected of him and probably even a touch more. But I think my stance is deserved as their goal productivity dropped both of the past two years.

08-09: 0.1644 goals/game 0.3151 assists/game 0.0482 points/player/game
09-10: 0.2080 goals/game 0.2993 assists/game 0.0595 points/player/game
10-11: 0.1772 goals/game 0.3040 assists/game 0.0634 points/player/game
11-12: 0.1020 goals/game 0.2353 assists/game 0.0533 points/player/game

Now, this can be affected by the players they have with them, but even so they should at least be holding their own as they progress in their career.

The freshman were the second least productive since the first full season of DI. Freshman production:

06-07: 0.2130 goals/game 0.3728 assists/game 0.0837 points/player/game
07-08: 0.1349 goals/game 0.2619 assists/game 0.0992 points/player/game
08-09: 0.1644 goals/game 0.3151 assists/game 0.0533 points/player/game
09-10: 0.1456 goals/game 0.3354 assists/game 0.0962 points/player/game
10-11: 0.1465 goals/game 0.4394 assists/game 0.0732 points/player/game
11-12: 0.1208 goals/game 0.1745 assists/game 0.0591 points/player/game

Clearly the were not as good at producing goals as the previous freshman were. Some of that could be attributed to the players they were surrounded with. But again, I was hoping for better mostly because of the FF appearance.

Re: >> RIT Tigers 2011-12 Part II: Making Some Noise at the House that Roars <<

i don't have a strong opinion on the performance of burt or the freshmen either way, but i don't think those numbers are entirely fair. scoring was down something like 3/4 goal a game across the league this year, you have to consider that.

Re: >> RIT Tigers 2011-12 Part II: Making Some Noise at the House that Roars <<

Re: >> RIT Tigers 2011-12 Part II: Making Some Noise at the House that Roars <<

I want to clarify that while I think it will be tough for RIT to get back to BCA next year, I think it's due in part to other teams stepping up their game. If you look up and down the league, I think as a whole it's a lot better than it was even a couple years ago.

It's true to an extent, but you can't tell me that, say, the Indianapolis Colts didn't disappoint this past year. Injuries happen, and they have to be overcome... but sometimes injuries are a perfectly reasonable explanation for a loss or two or three. They don't become immaterial just because they could happen to anyone.

Injuries are a part of sport, but there are some that you can not overcome...

Also as I said before, would be interesting to see how Brenner and Burt would have been as Freshmen with out Sarazin. All in all I think its crazy to expect Freshmen to carry the team...

So the world is back to normal as we disagree...

Looking at the out of conference results last fives years it was the 3rd best year, about 6 wins better than other two...

2011-2012 - 16-57-8 (.247)
2010-2011 - 17-53-9 (.272)
2009-2010 - 10-48-5 (.198)
2008-2009 - 14-46-6 (.258)
2007-2008 - 8-47-9 (.195)

Wins break down by team....

Air Force 2
Niagara 1
RIT 3
Mercyhurst 3 (two against ALabama Huntsville)
Holy Cross 2
Bentley 0
Robert Morris 1
UCONN 1
Canisius 0
AIC 1
Army 1
Sacred Heart 1

The OOC record has to improve over time. It is hard to imagine it getting much worse than it was.

I remember hearing this rationalization about the Tigers' gradual fall-off in results back at the end of the D-III days. "...other teams stepping up their game..." is NOT an excuse for a program the quality of RIT's. If you're at or near the top and your opponents begin stepping up, it's up to you to find a way to step up your game as well. If you're not moving forward, you're standing still. If you're standing stil while those around you are moving forward, you're actually moving backwards.
That's not to imply that I think RIT is standing still or moving backwards. It's just that if that reasoning were true, they would be.

Off to Cali in the am #sunsoutgunsout
Worst part of hockey is breaking in new gear lol, at least I'll have a day to work it in before my first game #playingforkeeps

Anyone heard where he's off to?
