Last night's game did such a number on me from a Bentley standpoint that this morning feels like I got hit by a bus. And we still have one more to go.
I really and truly feel that when this Bentley team plays a full 60 minutes of hockey, they are unbeatable. They proved that during the season, and they proved that in rallying against certain teams at certain points. RIT is a doppelganger of us, with a good goalie, decent defense, and an offense that can score on turnovers. Tonight could boil down to just plain wanting it more.
This series has been great, and this is why - these teams are both showing pure emotion on the ice. Bentley is a team that flies on emotion, plays with raw energy, and goes 100 mph when they get momentum. They know how to keep the adrenaline going when they're losing, and that third period was as much about that and taking advantage as it was about anything else. When Grieve was tossed, I guarantee the Bentley bench felt antagonized and started playing with a massive chip on their shoulder (didn't see the video but listened to some of the audio).
I think this game is going to come down to how much the referees will let go. If it boils down to a street-fight style game, that's what Bentley plays well in, with guys like Nudy and Kayfes antagonizing and instigating. It's just how it's gone all year, and last week against SHU (granted RIT is clearly a better team than SHU), they got the Pioneers way out of the gae by the 2nd period. It was a 5-0 game, but it might've been 72-0, and the Bentley players ended up in fights in the third period because the Pioneers decided "Screw it, game's over."
I'm genuinely looking forward to a helluva game tonight. I think RIT will bring 60 minutes, and I think Bentley will bring 60 minutes. It's goiong to boil down to who simply wants it more.
