The Mitchell injury hurts, but the offense hasn't really been there all year. I think Saracino's absence could be as much, if not more of a factor. I would say the biggest factor though is that no one has stepped up to become the #1 line that we need to replace the Favot/Brenner line. That line could score even when matched up against top lines. This year, not only is whichever line the opposing coach matches up his #1 pairing against not scoring, but the secondary scoring lines aren't doing much on the road either. RIT's 0-6-0 in Western Pod away games, and scored a grand total of 5 goals in those games. Only ONE of those goals was scored 5 on 5 (1 was scored when RIT had their goalie pulled, the other 3 were PPG's). That's horrendous production.
Regarding tonight's game...yeesh. Pretty awful performance, considering the stakes.
Yes, Saracino is a key loss. He was playing as good or better anyone before his injury. Definitely one of the best D-men in our league, and a player that was a real scoring threat. I think he could be playing for a more "prestigious" program somewhere. While we're talking about injuries, I'd add Brian Potts to the list of unfortunate losses. Admittedly hard to project for the whole season, but Potts had 4 goals and 5 total points in 7 games before he went down. Imagine if he continued that output for the season.
Great stats! From a purely statistical standpoint. Very, very sad from a fan perspective. Those away goal totals are jaw-dropping. Not sure what got into the team at the Catamount Cup, but sadly our success there looks like an aberration at this point.
I remember coach Wilson saying a month or so ago that they really don't have a definitive #1 line this season. Apparently it's tough to score on the road without one. The Favot/Brenner line was definitely the go-to line last year. I too have been a little disappointed in some players not seeming to progress over the last season or two in order to replace our key player losses. Not sure where we would be this season without the two freshman, Garbowsky and McGowan.
Yeah, that was a very pedestrian effort last night, considering the stakes. Like the T.V. commentator for Niagara said near the end of the game last night, paraphrasing: "the RIT players seem very relaxed and don't seem to have a strong sense of urgency, and I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing. Maybe it's because they are very confident in their abilities..."
Here's hoping tonight's game is much, much better!
