Re: >> RIT Tigers 2011-12 Part II: Making Some Noise at the House that Roars <<

I think some of these guys do "double duty" and work for both the ECAC and AHA. Either that, or there's some sort of exchange program going on. The night that our refs were apparently ECAC refs, the ECAC game on NBCSN between Yale and Dartmouth was being refereed by a guy named Feola. I have no idea if that's the same Feola as we regularly see at AHA games, but it looked like him. Of course, he had a hockey playing brother or two, didn't he? Or is it that it just seemed like he played for EC for 8 years?

You are right. Even from that Eric Ernst page,

ECAC Hockey: 2005-present, referee
Atlantic Hockey: 2004-present, referee
ACHA Division I: 2004-present, referee

We know one thing and that is Canisius is playing UCONN in the first round. What we don't know is who the home team will be, though my money is on UCONN.

Wish we knew that RIT could beat Niagara. Seeing as we haven't beat them yet in the Div. I era (one of the most unbelievable stats). I say that somewhat jokingly, because obviously we "can" beat Niagara. From my estimation I think that the Tigers are going to need at least 2 points this weekend in order to get a first-round bye. I don't think we want to play for 2 ties though. Niagara is going to be very tough to beat, as usual. Their goalie is playing great and our offense has had a really tough time scoring at times, averaging 2.33 goals per game in our last 6 games.
Here are some comparison stats:

Defense
Team Defense in goals allowed per game: RIT=2.09 Niagara=2.34
Starting Goalie goals allowed per game: RIT=1.90 Niagara=1.73
Penalty Killing %: RIT=85.8% Niagara=82.1%

Offense
Team Offense in goals per game: RIT=2.66*(2.42) Niagara=2.78
Powerplay Scoring %: RIT=17.57% Niagara=20.29%

* If you remove the lopsided 10 goal beat-down we put on Sacred Heart on Jan. 14th. RIT's Goals per Game drops to 2.42
Niagara has not scored more than 6 goals against anyone this year.

Re: >> RIT Tigers 2011-12 Part II: Making Some Noise at the House that Roars <<

Re: >> RIT Tigers 2011-12 Part II: Making Some Noise at the House that Roars <<

Essentially, RIT needs at least a split this weekend: they clinch a bye with the split, but will need a TON of help if they can only take 1 point. They'll automatically drop behind Niagara and Air Force, but as long as they don't end up tied with AF they'll own all the tiebreakers with anyone who can tie them (Mercyhurst is the only Western team (who we beat on goal differential), and RIT swept both Eastern pod teams). So they'll need either a Mercyhurst split or worse vs CC or the Bentley/HC series ending in a split or a 3 point weekend.

If Air Force gets swept in tandem with a 1 point RIT weekend, though, they start losing tiebreakers to EVERYONE. Mercyhurst wins the AF/RIT/MU tiebreaker, then AF would win the next round of tiebreakers w/ RIT but would lose all tiebreakers with either Eastern pod team. So basically a Mercyhurst split in this scenario would result in a 1st round series for RIT (since one of HC and Bentley has to end up at least tied with RIT as well as Mercyhurst, Niagara, and AF)

A snippet from an article praising Tanev from http://blogs.theprovince.com/2012/0...y-chris-tanev-los-angeles-kings-radim-vrbata/

"Chris Tanev: Beast

Un-drafted, un-heralded, undersized for so long, under-looked, Chris Tanev was not a guy who was supposed to make it to the NHL. And yet, the 22-year old has a legitimate shot at being a top 4 defenseman for a team that’s one of the best defensive teams in hockey.

...

In the seven games that Chris Tanev has played this year, Vancouver have earned 53.4% of all scoring chances at 5 on 5—101 for and 88 against—but while Tanev is on the ice, the number goes up to 57.4%.

It’s not like Tanev doesn’t play in key situations either. According to Behind The Net, he plays tougher minutes than Aaron Rome, Andrew Alberts and Keith Ballard as far as opposition goes. He also starts just 33% of his shifts in the offensive zone, showing how much coach Alain Vigneault trusts him at either end.

The kid lacks offensive instincts at this point, but his smart play in all three zones help the Canucks control the play when he is on the ice. He has a very bright future."

Re: >> RIT Tigers 2011-12 Part II: Making Some Noise at the House that Roars <<

Looking at the stats, there isn't much difference between RIT and Niagara. Both have great goaltending and solid team defense. Neither team are big goal scorers, though Niagara has a slight edge in goals per game season average. Also, over the last 6 games of the season Niagara has been scoring above their team season average(last 6 games: 3.17) and RIT is below the team season average(last 6 games: 2.33) against very similar competition. Not having Adam Mitchell for those 6 games may at least partially explain our scoring reduction. I don't like the Tiger's chances of winning or tying this weekend if they give up more than 2 goals a game(actually you could say that for most games this season). Frankly giving up more than 1 goal might be tough to overcome given Niagara's strong goaltending.

I think it's going to come down to special teams this weekend. The Tigers have to stay out of the penalty box as much as possible. The Tigers have more penalty minutes per game than Niagara(a little more than 3 minutes more per game). Niagara has a better powerplay goal percentage, however RIT has the better penalty killing percentage so no real advantage there. But if Niagara has more P.P. opportunities than we have P.P. opportunities, the odds tilt in their favor. Obviously because you have fewer chances to score when you are defending the P.P. I'm assuming the Tiger's are going to be very conservative with taking chances to score shorthanded. We need to be on the offensive as much as possible, without taking too many risks.

I also think that the team that scores first will be strongly favored to win, or at least get a tie. Especially if the team scoring first is Niagara. I'm sure they'd be content to pack a bunch of defenders around their goal in a "prevent" defense and wait for us to get penalized and then try to capitalize on the powerplay.

It's going to be a tough couple games for the Tigers. The playoffs are starting early!

I think you can throw the stats out the window at this point. It's going to come down to who plays it smart and who wants it more. You're right, the play-offs start tonight.

The Tigers have to stay out of the penalty box as much as possible

Tiger's are ranked 7th in the nation in penalty minutes per game, the above is not going to happen! :)

Good news is that they are ranked 6th in Penalty Kills

Our Power Play is rather dreadful. We need to be able to take advantage of the advantage that we get with 1 extra skater. "SHOOT THE PUCK!!"

I hope you're right that we can throw the stats out the window, because they seem to generally favor Niagara. Case in point: our greatest strength all season has been our goaltending, primarily with Shane Madalora who is ranked 5th in the nation in Save percentage. But guess what, Niagara's goalie Chris Noonan, is ranked 3rd in the nation. I agree; desire, luck, will, teamwork and hard work can overcome any minor stat discrepancies. Both teams have lot on the line(the first round bye), so the desire to win "should" at least on paper, be about the same. Niagara also has a certain "aura of invincibility" going for them, because we have never beaten them at the D1 level(shockingly). I'm really hoping we get off to a quick start tonight and get the first goal(or two, or three...) and get the win tonight.

Yes, I know what you mean about the penalties:) I was trying to be careful and say "stay out of the penalty box as much as possible".
Definitely have to avoid the five minute majors.

Looking forward to watching both games on Time Warner cable in the Albany, NY area!

I don't even know what this means. Both teams want to win both games, don't you think?

Our Power Play is rather dreadful. We need to be able to take advantage of the advantage that we get with 1 extra skater. "SHOOT THE PUCK!!"

Now I've definitely been known to shout to "shoot the puck" but people should be careful. Many fans expect if the puck goes out to the point that the defensemen should just wind up and blast it. However, if there isn't a clear lane to the net, the puck will hit someone in the high slot and very likely lead to short handed chance as the defense is flat footed and the checking forward already has momentum

Not picking on you, just pointing out a pet peeve of mine :) I do think RIT tends to hold onto the puck too long and should move it faster to break up the defense and get those shooting lanes.

Getting out worked down low tonight. No matter what happens the rest of season boys need to grab some weights and lift...

Also sick and tired of seeing behind the back passes and touch passes in the neutral zone. Stop throwing the Dang puck... Rant over for now

I've said it before and I'll say it again: I won't be surprised if RIT doesn't make it to BCA this year.

This is just a terrible effort. Maybe, we're just destined to never beat Niagara.

Our offense is abysmal right now. Niagara isnt really good but now that they have the lead they revert to garbage boring hockey because they know we cant score. Thats what romo did too. There is 0 urgency or hustle. They wont be winning this game and need a win tomorrow ir they will finish 6 th

The bright side is that Mercyhurst and Air Force both lost, and it looks as though Holy Cross and Bentley may end in a tie (We have tiebreak over both of them)

So given our loss, the results around the league were as good as could be dreamed of.
