I am hoping the the semester system helps hockey but in reality the only benefit I can really see is that it might help with scheduling.

On a personal note I liked the quarter system and think this move sucks. I will leave it at that and not rant.

Matt, I hear you. My wife (also an RIT alumn) is firmly on your side. The best calendar is program dependent and for mine, which is a research-heavy grad program, semesters come out way ahead. Also, I think RIT badly needs the revision and rethought of the curricula that this transition forces. FWIW, the administration appears to be doing the transistion "right" by having plenty of time and resources set aside. I hope that continues right through 2014.

I also just read in another note from Pres. Destler that a mini-term will be planned in the long January break (common at semester schools) and that might well keep enough students on campus to keep the January games well attended.

Questions for RIT fans...what is the best way for an out of towner to get tickets? I've been trying to get the bf, an RIT alum, to take me to a game this year and we think we can make it there for the Friday night Air Force game next weekend. Considering the standings, I realize that weekend's games are huge. Is there a chance of selling out?

There is a good chance of selling out, especially if things are not settled by then in the standings. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster.

I would honestly be surprised if the games didn't sell out. You can get tickets either through ticketmaster.com, or by calling or visiting the RIT Gordon Field House Box Office. Their number is 585-475-4121. Alumni get a discounted ticket, only available at the box office or that number (not through ticketmaster). If you have never been to an RIT game, I highly advise getting there early, by 6:15 or 6:30, to guarantee getting a seat. It becomes standing room only very fast.

Don't ever use Ticketmaster if you can avoid it - you will get robbed with service fees. Single game tickets can be purchased at the Gordon Field House and Activities Center Box Office or by phone at (585) 475-4121. Pay with a credit card and have your tickets held at Will Call at the rink. With this much advance notice they might even mail you your tickets.

Yep those kids won't know the true work you had to put into a quarter system. Just gets easier and easier...

When Tom was a boy he had to walk to school, up hill - both ways.:p

Tom is still wet behind the ears. Just a baby. :)

Now when I was at RIT, the spring quarter ended mid June and the Fall started the end of September. (really did) Unless you had a coop job, it was a PITA to find a summer job when you were almost a month behind everyone else. :p :p

Oh yeah, the quarter mile didn't have buildings to block the wind. Just snow banks and some little 3ft tall excuses for pine trees. And, the Ritter didn't have glass, chicken wire, or netting on the side boards. Took a real man to abuse the opposition when there wasn't anything between you and the ice.

You guys have it so easy now. :) :) But, at least when I graduated you could find a job. Oh yeah, and I only had 6K in student loans to pay back.

Man, I am getting ********** old....

Re: >>>>> RIT TIGERS 2009-2010 <<<<< Rockin' The Ritter For Another Year

Some quotes from the Pete Feola article:

"The best compliment an official can get is when the game is over and nobody knew you were out there," he said. "People come to games to watch the players not the refs. It's certainly an art form and a lot of guys are good at it, and some aren't that good and you know who they are."

I like Pete and always think he does a good job out there, but boy as a official myself, I hate that quote.

Bruce Froemming who umpired the second most games in MLB history said it best...

"One of the really wrong theories about officiating is that a good official is one you never notice. The umpire who made that statement was probably a real poor official who tried to get his paycheck and hide behind his partners and stay out of trouble all his life. Control of the ballgame is the difference between umpires that show up for the players and the managers."

Re: >>>>> RIT TIGERS 2009-2010 <<<<< Rockin' The Ritter For Another Year

I had dinner last night with four other RIT alumni and there was a pretty lengthy discussion about the new semesters announcement. Between the five of us, there were five different opinions about whether semesters are good/bad, and also about the other options that were considered.

The disparity of opinions and viewpoints was a little surprising to me.

Personally, I liked the life skills that the quarter system forced students to learn if they wanted to survive in the time-crunched atmosphere that is RIT. I think that was a differentiator between RIT and almost every other university, and I believe it will be missed.

This is one of the reasons I like the quarter system. The semester system certainly does not prepare students for life in faster paced industry atmosphere. (I transferred into RIT after my second year so I have experience in both).

Quarter system also allows for a more variety of classes to be taken. Which I think was valuable for my career.

But hey, now students will get to visit their friends during spring break! And they get to leave Rochester and it's cold winter for a month! And RIT will be following the likes of great universities such as Cinncy and Northeastern. Nothing like being a follower instead of a leader! Everyone else is on semesters so it must be great. Great reasons for this move!

Convince me it would honestly be better for overall education and I might be singing a different tune.

I guess we are back to disagreeing again, Tom. A good official can command respect and make the hard calls without becoming a freak side-show.

Random thought, but I wonder if we can close this thread out before the regular season ends.

I would think so. Especially if I continue to make worthless comments like this. ;) :D

So the engineering programs at colleges like Cornell, Clarkson, MIT and the military academies aren't as good because they're on the semester system? I don't buy that for a second.

Good lord, I never said they were inferior (although I do think Clarkson is second rate). Where did you get that? I was simply stating my preference, why I liked the quarter system, and I was poking fun at some of the weak (IMO) reasons listed in Destler's letter.

Interesting, BTW, that RIT's Saunders Business School is advertising on USCHO.
