RIT 2010-11: What do Tigers dream of?

Re: RIT 2010-11: What do Tigers dream of?

Elio was far from the worst regular starting goalie I have seen at RIT.

yeah he wasn't very good, but you have to remember that he was a D3 level recruit playing in front of what wasn't exactly a defensive minded RIT squad. i think we got spoiled by the quality of the defensive play and goaltending last year.

Re: RIT 2010-11: What do Tigers dream of?

Q:
i wasnt. Please educate me?

A:
elio was far from the worst regular starting goalie i have seen at rit.

He might not have been the worst, but he was pretty bad. It wasn't all his fault, but he gained a reputation as the goalie you rolled your eyes at.

frankly, i don't trust d'tullio at all. Listening to the tw broadcasts for the last couple of years, it's obvious that the pair of them are clueless about hockey (most obvious example being when battaglia was wondering "how that isn't a hand pass" when a um-lowell player batted a puck to a teammate in his own zone. I don't think he has any inside information, i think he was just talking out of his *** (as is his standard practice)

You might be right, but it seemed like a pretty bold statement to label it as speculation. Time will certainly prove him right or wrong.

i heard rumor that people took out their keys saturday night. That is one thing i personally would love to see never done again by rit fans.

In other news, is anyone out there going to the games at rpi / union this coming weekend? I live in the area and it would be nice to have some other away fans to yell with.

There were far too many people shaking keys with a minute left and a one goal lead. I was so uncomfortable I turned around and chewed out the fans directly behind me on why they shouldn't be doing it. They listened to me. It's just too bad we couldn't get everyone else to put them away. Then I turn around after the tying goal and see one of my friends still playing with his keys. I almost lost it. I'm not huge into the whole "tempting the hockey gods" thing, but the keys definitely sealed the deal that night. Ugh.

I didn't think he was terrible, but his confidence wasn't always there. He turned in some good performances, but when things went downhill, they'd snowball. And, confidence is so critical for a goalie. He was certainly part of the problem when the team folded after the D1 announcement that year.

Great atmosphere and a very entertaining hockey game Saturday. I was impressed by a lot of the freshman, and I liked how RIT adjusted after the first ten minutes when UMass was taking it to them physically. RIT really held most of the play the rest of the way. It was too bad that two of the goals against were real soft, but you can't write anyone off after one so-so game coming back from injury.

Re: RIT 2010-11: What do Tigers dream of?

As far as the maladora/ropponen/watson discussion..

Everyone got one real game (exhibition doesn't count). Now, looking at this one data point, we can all draw some conclusions.

Going into this season, the thought was that madolora was going to be the top dog. watson was likely to be #2, and ropponen was going to be the #3.

Clearly things aren't panning out this way.

Now, I hate losing as much as the next guy, and ties are where everyone loses. Madolora performed poorly - but he also came out with at least a point.

If I were to guess, coach Wilson will probably rotate em around one more time and make the call then. I would not be surprised if we see that happen.

If it were my call? Start Ropponen against RPI, Watson against Union. If either of them are spectacular, they play against RMU - else Madolora gets another shot to prove himself. Best performer gets the gig, perhaps if we have 2 stand outs, we do the Friday 1 guy, Saturday the other guy thing.

All that said, I was devastated Saturday when we tied. :(

Re: RIT 2010-11: What do Tigers dream of?

I don't really see how any of the goalies have proven themselves. I don't think there is any clear 1, 2, or 3 yet. They have all let in soft goals so far this year.

Re: RIT 2010-11: What do Tigers dream of?

The keys......ugh. There were a bunch around us that were shaking their keys.....naeger and I started talking very loudly about how it wasn't the time to shake the keys.....can anyone remember the last game against Elmira???? My 11 year old was in another section with a whole pack of his friends. Fans were shaking keys around him. He told them to stop it. They pretty much blew him off as to not knowing squat.... He told them " I know alot more about RIT hockey than you do" They didn't believe him.....goal was scored That 11 year old boy has probably seen over 200 RIT hockey games.....Don't dis some of the kids wandering around the Ritter. They know more about RIT Hockey than most of the bandwagoners.....

Goaltending subject....First goal was weak....Tying goal was the team's fault....It looked like my 9 year old son's squirt team. Guy left unmarked, everyone was staring/focusing on the puck, easy goal....

I haven't seen Watson play yet (had youth hockey stuff going on for the exhibition game), but the last goalie that we picked up from BC junior hockey was pretty darn good. I'm gonna say that we will see all three being rotated in some way for the next few games and maybe then it settles down to a Friday one goalie, saturday the other goalie routine like Wayne and Brian went with in prior years.

RPI game-
The pepband will be going to RPI (and cornell next week) It would be nice to see a good strong RIT crowd there for thoes games.

Keys-
There were LOTS of keys out in the last minute. I have never been a fan of the keys. We did that in HS as well. It alwas just seamed silly and anoying to me. I prefer the good bye song/chang thing.

the side effect of having at least 8,400 people that only come to the homecoming game, is that they do what they want. there is no way your going to control them. on a side note i wish the corner crew would pull the stick out of there a** about the wave. let the people have their fun.

To all you smucks raging about the goalie situation.... obviously you know nothing of hockey, or your such a flake of a fan that as soon something goes wrong your demanding shakeups. what about all the chances we had to bury the puck while there was a mess in front of the net? why arnt you spewing your rage elsewhere? because its a lot easier to remember a guys name when hes out there the entire time. No conclusions can be made from just one data point. they have each played one game. frankly im excited to see 3 goaltenders that can do the job. the coaching staff sees them a lot more than us, so have a little faith and get ready for next week. *end rant

i was at the elmira game and that is precisely why i hate the ritual. for those who weren't there or don't remember, check out this box score. long story short, elmira were probably the biggest d3 rival we had and it was our last game (ever?) against them before our d1 bump. because of the rivalry we had the keys out real early with 5-6 left to play. we were three up, but they came back to tie it with 2 shorthanded goals and they won in overtime. fwiw, that game is a big part of why i don't have fond memories of elio33 as well.

The wave is just as bad as the keys. Doing the wave when you aren't absolutely dominating a team is just wrong. It ranks up there with the home DJ playing mission impossible when the home team is down.

I don't remember the last time RIT won when our fans have done the wave. To me it's almost like the key issue.

The goalie situation will shake out so get off the panic button. Speaking of which we're 0-2-1 why is no one on the panic button about the bad start this year?(i don't think the start is bad.)

We've done the wave before at home. I definitely recall yelling down to the Corner Crew to do it because the situation was okay for it. The wave is great under the right circumstances.

I also am okay with this start. We've played several OOC teams strong and I think we can really only get better.

Re: RIT 2010-11: What do Tigers dream of?

Like Loki said, we had 7000+ people there who don't know our players or our traditions. If we want big crowds, we've got to take the bad with the good.

There's no excuse for the keys, of course, but I think trying to stop a full arena of people from doing the wave is pointless, bad luck or not.

Re: RIT 2010-11: What do Tigers dream of?

An interesting note from John DiTullio during the game last night was that Madolora will be this team's starting goaltender and that "it is his job to lose." I'm not sure where John got that information, but I trust him and if that is the case, I trust our coaches and whichever netminder they back.

Wilson: “It will be Shane initially, but I think we’ll be going by committee for the first half of the season,” he said. “Jan [Ropponen] and Josh Watson will get their chance.”

Re: RIT 2010-11: What do Tigers dream of?

I didn't notice the keys out at the end (too focused on the crap happening in the Tigers' zone), but that's inexcuseable to get out the keys with a one goal lead.

The wave didn't bother me. I don't see that as a "keys" or "start the bus", end of game type of fan actvity. It's more just a way for a big, enthusiastic crowd to get into something. That being said, I don't usually participate in the wave, but that's just cause it's not my thing.

With regard to the goaltenders... let the coaches figure it out. They've got three more NC's to experiment with. I'm guessing each will get another start. It may appear as though Jan has played the strongest, but upon further inspection, St. Cloud (at least so far - meaning not much) may not be as good as billed. And... I don't know if anyone noticed the out of town scoreboard, but UNO is still undefeated after sweeping Minnesota in St. Paul this past weekend. So maybe UNO and not SCSU was the best team the Tigers have faced so far. Who knows? Clearly the Tigers don't have a clear cut # 1 going into the season, but did they going into Morris' or Euverman's or Guimond's first seasons? Let's just let it shake out.

As far as the game is concerned... I was highly disappointed (as were about 10,500 other people) at the way the Tigers finished that game. I thought they outplayed and outhit the Riverhawks overall. But they never really dominated play for any considerable stretch. And I wasn't overly impressed with anything Lowell was doing. Although I do give McDonald credit for the nerve he showed pulling the goalie while shorthanded.

I really thought the tribute to Chraig Charron was fantastic. I know lots on here may not know who he is unless you're from Rochester (or Lowell) or have been around here a while. But trust me, he has made a real impact in this community, hockey-wise and even more than that in the community. It was really cool to see the Lowell players wearing replicas of the old Lowell Chiefs jersey all with the # 5 and CHARRON on the backs. I wonder if those were auctioned off as well. I never had the chance to check on-line since the game to find out.

Last year I think everyone was all worried about the scoring heading into the season so that got highlighted as part of our initial losses since the team was outshooting teams like Clarkson

This year everyone was focused on the goalie situation heading into the season so a young goalie gives up one soft goal and we vote him off the island :)

Last year proved its not a big a deal as long as it doesn't continue. The forwards eventually picked it up just have to hope goaltending follows suit his year

It seams like we are certanly getting more physical. we went toe to toe with a very physical St. Cloud team, and significantly outhit UNO. It makes for exciting hockey seeing guys on the other team get flattened. But many times I have seen guys go after the body when they had a prime oppertunity to make good play by going after the puck. I love seeing the physical play, but IMHO i think they boys need to learn to recognize their oppertunities to make a play with the puck a little better.

My unofficial stats on the wave have it now with 8 of the past 10 times a wave has succeeded in completing a lap around a "home" arena for RIT the opposition has scored a goal within a minute. Additionally, when the wave was being started up on Saturday RIT was on a powerplay. That's not really the best time to be doing a cheer (if you can call it that) that brings the crowd's attention away from the ice. Up by 3 and 5 on 5? That may be a better time.

As far as the keys or the good-bye song, they are about the same to me in effect. Don't do either until you are sure of a win. Though traditionally the good-bye song has been saved by the corner to serenade someone getting kicked out of the game after having done something stupid.

Someone is keeping track of that??? Wow. I wish I had that kind of free time. :P

Not to mention overzealous physical play leading to bad penalties (I'm looking at you McReynolds... even though he's one of my favorite players due to his intensity... so maybe that's not fair).
