Re: Rep Retirement Thread 130: Revolutions Abound!

My parents are the two biggest morans on the planet.

So next week I get to go to Murfreesboro, TN for some training. I will be leaving at 9:50 Alaska Time Sunday night, and arriving in Nashville at 10:30 Monday morning Central Time. I then have to pick up a rental car and drive about 30 miles to my hotel in Murfreesboro and check in.

So what do my parents decide to do when they find out about this? Drive 600 miles down from Michigan to Tennessee to see me. Now if they had planned to spend a couple evenings with me, this would have been a worthwhile endeavor, and I honestly would have enjoyed seeing them again. Of course, these are two people who actually think Two and a Half Men is funny, so they didn't. Turns out the only day they had planned on seeing me was Monday, otherwise known as THE DAY I WILL HAVE JUST SPENT TEN HOURS HOPPING BETWEEN RED-EYE FLIGHTS CROSSING NO LESS THAN THREE TIME ZONES IN THE PROCESS AND STILL NEED TO PILOT A MOTOR VEHICLE 30 FARKING MILES AND CHECK INTO MY HOTEL. All to have maybe a single hour-long dinner together.

And they wonder why I never call.

You're a bad son. Your poor parents are driving 600 miles to see their favorite son, and you are nitpicking. Shame on you, Twitch. Shame on you. There are parentless kids in Ethiopia who would love to trade places with you.

If my parents pulled that I would be nuclear about just how blindingly stupid that was and not see them at all. Thankfully they're not stupid.

------

My employer runs out of money at 12:00 AM Saturday... i'd be tempted to work to midnight just to find out what that is like except that, yes, Suitland is not a place to be at 12AM on a Friday night.

edit: strike that... apparently they've passed the CR... yesterday... wow... interesting how it was a big deal for the House to pass it but a whimper when it comes to the Senate passing and Pres signing it... curious how that wasn't important to note anywhere.

The sad part is I can't tell if you're kidding or not. I shouldn't feel this way. I'm very lucky to have two loving parents when I knew a ton of people growing up who went through divorces - or worse. But geez, they want to go through all that? Especially considering I'll see them in September for my sister's wedding anyway?

Even my dad admitted to me over the phone it was a dumb idea for such little time together.

No they don't. CR passed until March 18. Unless you're included in the 4 billion in cuts...

Actually, I am kidding. To a much lesser extent, my parents are the same way. When they want to make plans, they expect me to be in the free and clear, and don't understand that I have other things planned (usually well in advance; stuff like the F5, etc).

While it'd be nice in your situation to have dinner with them, the timing is incredibly ridiculous. Wait until the day after you get in town, or wait until the day of your departure (or the day before).

I dunno man... that's divide by zero territory.

Yeah... again, somehow I missed that it passed... get to hurry up and wait for 3/18... IMO... I don't think its looking good for 3/18... if public opinion lurches in any one direction I think we're more likely to see a shutdown.

edit: of course, being at work through 8PM each night, you tend to miss some things.

I disowned mine, Twitch. I suggest you do likewise. You're an adult now. Cut the cord for ****'s sakes.

According to higher-ups, the VA is already funded for FY2011, so we keep right on trucking.

And my pay comes through DFAS (accounting service which handles paychecks, benefit checks, etc. for the military,) which is self-funding, so that shouldn't stop either.

*grumble*

I had somebody, not at work, read me the riot act about working during a shutdown... in essence one could argue that I wouldn't be allowed to crack the books on my apartment shelves open... or more to the point... put pencil to paper on a half-baked idea... uh... excuse me?!?!?!

Yup. Apparently they've even had cops patrolling the buildings throwing out people trying to sneak into work.

If I were the AFGE, I'd be getting involved right now. Let the federal government know that they have 2 million odd employees who wouldn't be getting paid. With unions in the news, messing with one is political suicide.
