Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 95: A USCHO Retrospective

Morning Lodge.

Work, blah. I don't think my computer could be any slower right now, and i have no idea w.t.f. is wrong with it.

Surprisingly emails weren't bad this morning, everyone else at work was gone too. :p

Good luck with the lady friend, commie!

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 95: A USCHO Retrospective

Good morning Lodge. So, did I miss anything worth noting over the last week or so?

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 95: A USCHO Retrospective

Good morning lodge. Last day in Mobile.
Mine was basically a rhetorical question. If you go to class, you have a much better chance of passing than if you don't go.
It is amazing how many students don't get this (or are content with crappy grades).

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 95: A USCHO Retrospective

Maybe I'm different, but when I hear stories of hand-holding classes like ctf has to take, or even advertisements about schools with small class sizes I don't see how that helps. For me, and my chosen career, I'm glad I went to a big school where many profs didn't even know my name. Taught me how to teach myself.

A lot of that is retention rate type of things. Schools don't particularly like it when students don't do well. Never quite understood why that's such a major black mark but i suppose if you assume that you know the students are likely to be intelligent but underperforming then its in the school's interest to catch that student so that the school looks better on the other side when the intelligent student does well later in life. Otherwise to keep retention rates higher just so you don't look so bad doesn't seem to be the right thing... people aren't owed an education.

Big school/small school has its good and bad parts. There are people who are just intimidated with the idea of getting lost in the shuffle and feel that they need some network around them just in case. Also, I think some want that noble ideal of students learning intimately (classroom intimately) from the professors and hence the low class size thing.

The issues with the big school is that while you do have to fend yourself you have to fend for yourself. If you can't get past a concept it may be harder to know where to seek out help or information... you can be plently bright and not get through a concept. Thinking critically at a college level doesn't necessarily come right away... you learn through your stumbles but you both have to stumble and have a way to come out. I suppose it does foster the idea that you have to figure out how to stand out from the horde... a lot more emphasis on individuality. When you know you don't have a fall back plan you realize that you have to forge your own way. Can't say that'll always work though... have to find the balance.

IMO, its easier to fail when you know that you can pull yourself out later... its a false confidence though. Eventually later becomes now.

Reality sets back in as the holidays are history

The fact that the holidays are over is really depressing. :(

Agreed on both. Now is when we need make the next three months as bright as possible. I'm heading to Lake Mille Lacs on Friday morning with 7 other guys. Breaking in the new 16' wheeler house on it's inaugural voyage. We have a four bedroom condo with cable and a huge table we can all sit at and play cards. :)

In 16 days Mrs. and I are headed to the Caribbean for some warm weather and a swim. :D

No clue how I'll get through February and March yet. I just hope by then the sun is coming up on my way to work and it's above zero :(

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 95: A USCHO Retrospective

I don't think I mentioned this before....

On Christmas day, my step grandma called me a racist pig and this is why:
Every year on Christmas eve, my parents invite over family and family friends who don't have any plans, and we have a fun and informal night, which always includes opening gifts, most of which are gag gifts and meant to be funny. This year my aunt and cousins came over, so as a joke I wrote my 17 year old cousin a card that said "Merry Christmas! This year, instead of buying you a gift, I have donated $100 in your honor to the United Negro College Fund. This gift will help a young person, who may not otherwise have the opportunity to obtain a good education, follow their dreams. They thank you for your generous offering." Everyone laughed, he thought I was serious, it was awesome. The next day, at our family Christmas get-together, he passed the card around, everyone thought it was great, until my step-grandma read it, she got really mad and I can't figure out why. Does she not realize that the United Negro College fund is a real and legit non-profit organization?

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 95: A USCHO Retrospective

For those of you that get that as a holiday.

yeah, must be nice not to work in the service industry.

ctf, you should be punched in the head. Or go to college at a respectable age. Get you *t together you dumb cooter. *** is wrong with you? You come in here being like "I'm so smart I didn't have to go to kindergarten" then you say you have around a 1.0 GPA. Good job, that's just terrific. How can you even get a 1.0 GPA? Did you fail like 4 classes or something? I don't even know HOW to get an F in a class. And don't give me that crap about "oh Tech is harder than most schools." BS. In the majority of my classes, it was 92-100 for an A, 84-91 for a B, 76-83 for a C and 70-75 for a D. Anything below that was a F. And in one, it was a 94-100 for an A. Work harder and spend less time posting on USCHO. Or partying. Or drinking. Or smoking. Or *king Painted Bandit. You know what? Until you get off of academic probation, I'm just going to call you Foxton2. Because you're dumb as a post and might as well get a sex change. Good day, Foxton2.

and yeah, DL, you were kind of being a doosh last night. Yes, it's just a game, but for a lot of us, it's more than that.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 95: A USCHO Retrospective

I was an academic casualty at tUMD, went back to school as an adult and earned my AA, BS, & MA degrees. Maturity is a wonderful thing - or so I've heard. :)

I refuse to grow up.

With that in mind I think it would be a great idea to go to the USA/Canada World Junior Gold Medal game that is tomorrow night. USA USA USA

Who is up for a Rep Lodge road trip to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan? Just think. Take the invasion to a different country. They wouldn't know what hit them. :D

She probably thought you were mocking the UNCF.
The UNCF is very real and very dedicated to all their recipients for all the right reasons. In addition, they're pretty much scandal free, which is something few non-profits can boast today.

Only in the sense that I miss having less traffic to fight on my way home from work in the morning. Other than that (and the pay), holidays are no different from any other day.

Maybe she thought you should make a donation to the Human Fund?

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 95: A USCHO Retrospective

Actually I'm aiming for something a little more substantive than that with this one. Surprising, I know.

Well, at some point in the relationship you plan on making her make those noises right?? ;) ;) :D

If we took this shibby show to France, they would surrender to us just to be safe, and name Ralph as their new Emperor. ;)
