Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 95: A USCHO Retrospective

Talk about a drive from hell. And back. And then back to hell.

Big snowstorm came through last night/today/tonight, so roads were ****ty to begin with. Not the worst they could have been, but enough to slow me down to 30-50 in a 55, depending on where I was.

So about 20 miles N of Syracuse, my engine overheating light starts flashing. Ok, ****. Maybe its some snow on the radiator, not letting it get cool air or something. Pull off at the next exit, park at a BK and put the hood up for 10 minutes or so. Go to start my car up, it starts, but idles out quickly and dies.

Call my dad, suggests some dry gas maybe. Run to the gas station across the street and get some, put it in, car starts. 5 minutes later, engine overheat light again. ***.

Call my dad again, suggests that I just try to limp to the hotel, we'll deal with it after I leave. Ok, fine... I just want to get some sleep before waking up before 0400 for my flight at 6. Get not 5 miles down the road, car is D.E.A.D. dead. won't start, nothing. Call AARP (my mom is a member, free roadside assistance!), wait about an hour in a dead car... I quickly got cold. Get towed to a Toyota dealership somewhat nearby, call a cab to get to the hotel. Wait another 30 minutes in my, again, dead/freezing car. Finally get to the hotel at 0045.

Mind you, I pulled off the exit at about 2000, ****ed around with the car for an hour or so, then started up... this has been 3 hours trying to get to the hotel from 12 miles away. I need to wake up in 3 hours to fly to Florida. If it wasn't for this fact, I would probably be close to suicidal. Not really, but close.

If I don't fall asleep in the airports, I'll try getting on from JFK or ATL. If not, talk to you from 60 degrees in Florida!

Depending on the vehicle, it could be moisture on a computer chip or something. I know my Jeep Wrangler doesn't like the cold/bad weather, probably helped by parking indoors since I got it. If it's bad weather (really rainy, snowy, cold) it starts hard, and if it's a really hard start, the engine light comes on for no apparent reason.

I say this because my family's old Corsica had that problem. The moisture and/or cold messes with the sensors on the chip.

I really don't know what it could be, but its definitely possible. It seemed to be leaking tranny fluid at BK, but I don't know for certain. Just before it died, just about every warning indicator light came on, Overheating, Battery, then my check engine, then ABS/Trac control/vehicle stability control, then my airbag light decided to join the fun, so its a big mystery right now.

that sounds electrical...
was it actually overheating, or was it just the warning light telling you that it was?

I am really bored, and not tired.

Agreed. Heck, my "check engine" light comes on if I'm too low on washer fluid.

And also agreed. Stupid weekend schedule. I haven't crashed out before 3am or so in the past few days (actually, besides last night, haven't crashed out before 4am). :o

My Jeep doesn't have much for warning lights :p
The truck on the other hand has had a light on since it was brand new that tells me that my tires improperly inflated...sorry, I don't want 80lbs of pressure in my tires, my truck rides bad enough as it is.

Yeah, I haven't been up early since Dec. 23rd, and the last about 5 days have all been really late, so tomorrow morning is going to be bad!!!!!!!:p

edit: brent, what is your plan for saturday in st. cloud? driving back to the cities or staying?

Depends on who's driving me. If it's free, I wouldn't mind staying in St, Clooud. But I don't mind riding back to the Cities, either. I have to get in touch with BPH, since last I heard, he was the winner in "Give Brent A Ride And Get Free Val's" sweepstakes.

I haven't decided what I'm doing yet. I don't really want to spend money on a hotel unless there is a decent sized group, so it is cheap. So I'm thinking that I'll either stay home Friday night, and just go with you guys Saturday, or go up Friday night and drive back after the game. If my friend that goes to school there is back up there, I'll probably stay with him, but I doubt he will be.

Well, there was no steam or anything smelling of coolant, so my guess is it's electrical or something ****ed the computer up. Just before it died, I had the christmas tree of death light display on my dash. First just the overheating, then the battery came on, then the check engine light felt like joining in on the fun. Then all 3 of ABS/ TCS and Vehicle Stability Control came on, shortly after followed by my airbag light. Whatever, it's at the Toyota dealership, and it only cost me $35 for towing/taxi to get to the hotel because of the AARP benefits. We'll see how much repairs add to that.

IIRC, we stayed at the Kelly Inn a couple years ago for a buddy's bachelor party, and it was more expensive than it should have been, given the quality of space/actual room. Frankly, it was kind of a dump (it's located very close to the Red Carpet).

We should all keep updated in the series thread for sure. I know I'm only making it up on Saturday, and I think that's the case for MNS, too.

ok, moving to the series thread, since this really doesn't need to be in the lodge :p

Check the serpentine belt. I had a pulley/tensioner break off and the belt came off so all of a sudden the coolant wasn't getting pumped and the engine overheats, lights go on like crazy and the alternator isn't going so the battery gets drained.

He should have also noticed that his power steering quit working, if it did, that is a very good guess.

Sweet, I can quote myself, how did I miss this? This should come in handy for the Duluth 3rd person threads.

Any way, I forgot to say that the coolant begins to overflow, too. This could explain the leaking fluid you saw.
