I really do give NMU credit for their "right to try" stance. You never know who will end up finding their stride and doing really well. I had a friend of mine that came in on academic probation, but wound up finding something he truly loved and was good at (psychology), and wound up coming back and getting his masters. Last I heard, he was working as a counselor in VA and doing really well. It's sad that stories like that more often than not get hidden behind the myriad of others that involve failing out.
It also slights others of us who came in as good students and continued to do well, but got our reputations stained by these types.
