Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 95: A USCHO Retrospective

Ac pro is actually rampant at Tech, especially in the freshman/sophomore years which are a weeder class extravaganza. All it takes is one bombed class to drag your semester GPA below a 2.0. For instance, you have a semester with 4 loaded classes and your grades are B, C, C, F...assuming all are equally weighted, that's a 1.75, and there you have it. And Tech loves to throw those loaded semesters at you.

It's not that the material is too hard, it's that the way Tech structures its learning environment forces the student to work on their own for success. Tech leaves a lot of the learning up to the students to figure out for themselves, and not everyone is prepared to do that right away.

ctf, you're saying a lot of the right things with regards to this. It is up to you to act on them. It's not up to your learning style or which animal you are or which intelligences you allegedly do or don't have. That information is meaningless if you don't put in the effort the classes ask of you. There is plenty of help available in any classes you have trouble with, and they won't come to you, you have to go to them.

What you're going through/about to go through is the single most important lesson Tech has for you. If you can learn it, you will be that much a stronger person for it.

While I can't comment on the Tech environment, I can tell you that in the case of some students, learning the various things about their intelligences and learning styles can be a huge benefit. Most people write that off as "hippy dippy bullsh-t" and when it's used inappropriately I can see how this could be true. However, when a student knows more about how they learn and what their strengths are and uses them to find strategies to boost their learning, it's far from meaningless bullsh-t.

OK, it's become far too intelligent and thought-provoking in here. Quick, someone get the commie.

The Lodge always gives me such good advice. It's kind of scary. You guys are awesome. :)
/mushiness

The Commie hasn't been here in awhile.

I don't disagree. The difference lies in the students that are "trying, but a little lost and could use some guidance" versus students that are "I'm failing two classes, screw it, I'm smart, I'll get it eventually, let's go drink." Tech seems to attract a lot of the latter.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 95: A USCHO Retrospective

Yeah, my older cousins all did relatively well, one of my cousins is at Tech now, and he's been on the Dean's List every semester but this one. Doesn't help either that my dad graduated magna cum laude 3 years ago from Tech...

If that isn't a typo... yeah... I have to imagine people who go to school later in life hate to see perfectly smart people blow opportunities like that. I mostly infer this from the number of older students who said "I wish I had gone to college in the first place".

"well.... the world needs ditch diggers too!"

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 95: A USCHO Retrospective

If you want to waste that tuition money, you can send it to me. I'll put it to better use. If you're in scholarship, then maybe you should think about the poor kid(s) that aren't getting the chance to attend college because money was given to you.

How was that?? I'm not a parent, so I don't know how to do the disappoinment thing.
That is pretty good.
But you just might **** Scarlett off with that comment. ;)

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 95: A USCHO Retrospective

That always does the trick. My parents didn't get mad, they just told me they were really disappointed in me. I just love how we get grades right before the holidays, because then my whole family told me they were disappointed, grandparents and aunts.. not fun. :(
Its like your very own Festivus airing of grievences just for you then wasn't it??

In all honesty, I probably wouldn't have looked at them had I not given my parents access to my grades early on this semester. Not to mention, I got a letter from Tech, telling me that I have to meet with my academic advisor (they listed the wrong guy, of course) and telling me that I have to take UN1010 - Creating Your Success. "Introduction to strategies for creating academic, professional and personal success. Emphasis is on determining individual priorities, improving self-management and developing critical thinking skills. Guided journal writing will be used to explore these strategies."
And guess who's the prof... my cousin. SHOOT. ME. NOW.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! Bend over, grab ankles!!!!!!:D :D :D :D

That's where my mom's epic academic nose dive at Ferris came in handy. The standard wasn't set too high for me. Then again, trying to hold the academic scholarship I had kept me somewhat in line, but trying to drag someone else kicking and screaming though school (and in the end failing) didn't help my cause.
Well, guess that makes me feel better about my dad getting kicked out of Ferris as well. Grandpa Wayne wanted his first born son to go to college and be smart, but Dad didn't really want to do that at the time. Not sure on all of the details from it all, but supposedly he was only there a semester or so before Ferris told him to not come back at all. There was a lot of drinking involved, and Dad did mention something about him holding a guy out the window as he was trying to kick out the window of his dorm room because his roommates locked him out. Either way, I'm pretty sure I didn't exactly get all of my smarts from him. ;)

my uncle ended up in the river when he went to Lowell (Tech)... didn't have to do much to clear that hurdle.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 95: A USCHO Retrospective

But it wasn't academics that did her in... she got kicked out of her dorm 5 weeks into the semester for conduct violations. :o
"Conduct Violations"

That's not vague or anything. :D

Was never on ac pro at UND. Yes, it took me 8 years to finish. 1.5 years as ATC, .5 off, 5 as Commercial Aviation (only reason I didn't finish it was getting flying done on time), 1 year as Aviation Management. The only semester I would have been close to ac pro was the management year. Halfway through the 2nd semester of it, I realized I hated the business side of it. Incredibly boring to me, and I couldn't wrap my head around it. Unfortunately, I forgot to drop two classes so that affected my GPA quite negatively. Switched to ATC...never looked back.

Still beat my dad and brother's undergrad GPA though. My youngest brother, however, killed both of us. Also, it didn't help that two of our cousins were ridiculously smart. One graduated from Northwestern with honors and is doing his masters abroad in England. He didn't have as much fun as I did in college though. Other cousin actually had a life at Marquette, and she is now in law school and is one of the top in her class (She's taken, and I wouldn't wish any of you on her anyway).

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 95: A USCHO Retrospective

If I'm not getting laid as a result, why would I go see that piece of crap?
...Nah...

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 95: A USCHO Retrospective

Okay, back to the working-world, there-are-no-holiday-weekends-this-week, work schedule starting tomorrow. It was nice while it lasted. :)

Probably very similar to what gmann went through with his il's! :p

"Conduct Violations"

That's not vague or anything. :D
In a word: alcohol. The problem: she was living in "wellness" housing and signed an agreement stating she wouldn't have alcohol (or drugs, etc) in her dorm. She knew when she popped the top that what she was doing was wrong, but did it anyway. double-u tee eff

Now, I'm not naive enough as a parent to think that it wasn't ever going to happen, but I certainly didn't expect it to happen quite the way it did. :o

Tomorrow starts my first 5-day work week since the beginning of November... not looking forward to it at all... :(
