Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 84: Steal This.

Unfortuantely that is a key difference. If the economy wasn't down the tubes there would be alot more engineering projects in the Twin Cities and I would have no problem having plenty of work.

One thing to remember. I switched career paths. I went from COO to peon in entirely different industries. I gave up the salary, the benefits, the expense accounts, stock options, bonus, lifestyle, and everything else aka fringe benefits that went with the position. Total leap of faith. At the time I made the jump I had no idea if I was carrying a heavy rock or a parachute. In hindsight I was carrying a parachute but at the time I had no clue. All in the name of love. ;)

Paging a Mister Bob Smith. Paging a Mister Bob Smith. Yo Smitty, check that top secret e-mail account of yours.

;)

Got it and I got your post from last night. Very funny Mr. wisenhiemer. :)

FWIW I wish I could change my name on yahoo. I have no reason why it comes up as Bob Smith.(?) I have had that account for quite a few years and I have tried many times to correct it.

I'm contemplating something similar. I like the rock/parachute analogy, I'll have to keep that in mind.

At least you aren't "Farrah __". When I registered for Dish Network, the guy registered me as "Farrah" instead of "Sarah"... I can't change it online either...

Oh, so you're just "pretending" to be the real Bob Smith. When you check into a motel does your, um, "wife" check in with you as well, Mister Smith? :D

Nope. She checks in as usual. Mrs. shot. Hey-oh! :p ;) :D :)

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 84: Steal This.

Yes I'm a civil engineer. I've helped design some of the major roadways in the Twin Cities, Chicago, Maryland, and St. Louis.

Yes I'm registered. I've been a PE for over 5 years.

Aren't they still building the one you worked on in Maryland? I haven't, however, seen anything in the news about it recently.

Have fun this weekend with those alleged golden angels of yours. I'll hoist a cold one in your honor while you chase futilely after those rascals. ;)

Yes they are. It's a road that's been needed for decades. Hopefully people will like it when it's done but I'm sure people will just complain about something about it. I'm so sick of people complaining about traffic congestion. People wake up it costs money to add lanes and roads if you're not willing to pay for it then shut the f up.

cc to the public:

I don't tell you how do your job so don't tell me how to do my job. It's called experience I have it when it comes to roadway design you don't. If you can do a better job then me then apply for my job.

I just turned down an opportunity (if you can call it that) to be an usher at Michigan Stadium for tomorrow's game.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 84: Steal This.

Taking a permanent job in another city does nothing to accomplishment my object of working in the Twin Cities. I would still be away from home. I might as well keep the job I have since my home base is the Twin Cities even though who knows when I will get to work there again.

hey man, it's not quite the same, but I'll fill you in on something...

I was working for an airline based in the Twin Cities. I was living at home with 18 days off a month. I was flying out to Denver every off day to see Quiz, and other days I was tending bar. I could go up to see Sioux Hockey in Grand Forks, I was bowling on a bowling team, getting in shape, and really, life couldn't seem much better. Except I was miserable every single day at work.

I left that job, and left the Twin Cities. I threw away 2 years of senority, an amazing schedule, and that bartending job. And you know what? I couldn't be happier. I relocated to Colorado, found another airline job, and within a year of working there, I can hold whatever schedule I want.

Bottom line is, if you don't take the risk, you won't know. Good luck with whatever decision you make bro.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 84: Steal This.

I never took the FE, so no plans to take the PE. But as a Mechanical Engineer, taking those is not nearly as important as other engineers. My company, and all of the others that I interviewed with, told me that they don't care if I have it or not, one even told me that they prefer engineers that don't have a PE. Since I didn't need it for work, I didn't take the test, I wasn't going to take the 8 hour long FE for fun!:p

Yeah, taking the FE years after graduation would not be fun, although I always kind of liked tests :o and didn't mind the FE in my last quarter.

In manufacturing a PE is still kind of moot, although that could change. And if you were ever to decide to branch out and consult on topics you've become expert in, a PE will really help. There is a growing movement to require a PE for many more engineering activities and in this state you may not even technically be able to use the title Engineer if you are not registered.

When I was in school I had no clue about the PE. Some friend recommended I take the FE so I did. Took the PE as soon as I could because my first employer encouraged it. Worked out great for me (I have landed at least three positions because I held one).

See that's the thing everybody see all the things I'm getting to do and thinks I'm lucky. But they're just a few hours of distraction till I'm miserable again. Life isn't about how many things you get to do it's about having somebody/people to enjoy life with. That doesn't happen when you're away from everybody you care about and can't develop meaningful relationship because you're constantly not where you want to be.

don't make your job your life, man. That's my advice. It's not worth it. No one says you have to be grateful and happy in your job. At least not me. And I'm the important one here. :D

BTW, Do you plan on making it back at all this season for a Vikings game? If so let me know maybe we can cheer on the Purple together sometime.

I can't wait to see AP run all over the Ravens D (that was for a certain Wolverine and trumpet fan). :p

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 84: Steal This.

Again, it was not an easy transition but I am married and have two wonderful kids and now I am just as miserable as everyone else. :D :p :)
Awwwww :)

As Winger mentioned I have very marketable skills unfortunately that's a moot point if there isn't work to be had because the State doesn't have the money to fix it's traffic congestion problems. So I'm forced to use the training I gained in Minnesota to fix the roadway issues in other states while my fellow Minnesotan get to be stuck in traffic. It's a win/win situation right.

Thanks for the story gmann. It helps to know what decisions other people have made.
And some states are in better situations than others. I think in some ways Mass lucked out, if you could call it that. FTA rejected the state Transportation Improvement Program, the bond bill was on recently reauthorize so for a year nothing got done. It just so happens that not to long after stuff gets rolling the ARRA funds came thru and was able to address the backlog of stuff.

At the time I made the jump I had no idea if I was carrying a heavy rock or a parachute. In hindsight I was carrying a parachute but at the time I had no clue. All in the name of love. ;)
I really like this analogy.

I find if i am a little nervous it is generally good and it is different than the all out "this is clearly a bad idea feeling". Most of us don't care for change, and the little nervousness is generally attributed to that, but anytime I have had that feeling, the results have always been far in my favor in the end.

I'm so sick of people complaining about traffic congestion. People wake up it costs money to add lanes and roads if you're not willing to pay for it then shut the f up.
Well if more people took public transportation there wouldnt be so much congestion. :)

Bottom line is, if you don't take the risk, you won't know. Good luck with whatever decision you make bro.
:) Hooray for happy people.

That is very true, maybe a career change if staying in the Twin Cities is the main priority for you. I know that would be unfavorable with all the time and experience you have put into your work/ education but dont you want to be miserable like gman too? :)

Get a blow up doll or sheep if that's how you roll. :p

Exactly. You work to live. You don't live to work. Trust me I'm really close to pulling the plug on my current work assignment and finding out if they will lay me off.
