Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 84: Steal This.

Would somebody take me out back, shot me and put me out of my misery? It would be the humane thing to do. People are nice enough to do it to animals who are in severe pain. Why not me?

No I'm not going to fill fortunate that I have a job if it's screwing up my life. The people who are telling me that don't understand. Having a job that continues to ship you to a new city every year when you're trying to settle down and find somebody to develop a serious relationship with isn't worth having no matter how much money they pay you. You can't put a price on your happiness and always being alone really SUCKS.

I'm not going to have to make new friends ever year after being shipped to a new city. Plus it's nearly impossible to development a long term relationship with a women when you work in a differenct city every six months.

Doesn't anybody understand that?

So what you are saying is you are not excited to go to your next city?
What city is it BTW.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 84: Steal This.

I like to travel but there is a big difference between traveling for fun and being forced to live a different city all the time.

Yeah I can understand that. Hard for you to settle in, when you know you are just going to be bouncing around for a bit. And not being able to settle in certainly affects quality of life. Heck I just decided to settle in here, when initially I thought I was going to be in the city after a couple of months.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 84: Steal This.

We get a directory every year, the number of kids at the school from Edina is amazing. Even more amazing is the $$$ at the school, yowza.

Yeah, all you rich *ers with your private school kids. Dang cake eaters.

:p

So CHA is lucky enough to have a job in this economic climate, eh? And one where he gets to travel and experience other parts of the country on the company's dime. ;)

It does get old though doesn't it? After two "long term temporary" assignments, one for about 19 months, one for 12 months, I quit and did something else.

I've come very close to quitting my current work assignment and finding out if I get layed off. Unfortunately, since the State and other engineering firms in the Twins Cities aren't really hiring because of the economic/lack of engineering work it would probably be employment suicide. Although, I'm very close to be willing to accept that.

Yeah but other states are. I would imagine with all the ARRA funding set loose out there demand is likey up. Even just 6 months ago, I posted a bunch of civil jobs to our WTS job board because Massachusetts also decided bridges falling down isnt good for public relations. Althought the market in general is kind of quiet I would imagine someone with your skills wouldnt be unemployed for long.

Taking a permanent job in another city does nothing to accomplishment my object of working in the Twin Cities. I would still be away from home. I might as well keep the job I have since my home base is the Twin Cities even though who knows when I will get to work there again.

I do. I committed career suicide 5 years ago. I resigned from a dream job to move to 320land to get married and settle down and raise a family. It was a very difficult adjustment at first in many ways. (granted the economy wasn't in such turmoil either)

Regarding my career I had to start at the bottom and work my way up. In fact my career took a complete opposite direction from what I was doing to what I am currently doing. 4 years ago I comprised a 5 year plan on where I would like to be careerwise. Currently I am on pace to hit my goal and have now started to idenitify and set my sights on a 10 year plan.

Again, it was not an easy transition but I am married and have two wonderful kids and now I am just as miserable as everyone else. :D :p :)

You're a transportation CE, right? Registered yet? If not, do it. Makes you more marketable.

Yes I'm a civil engineer. I've helped design some of the major roadways in the Twin Cities, Chicago, Maryland, and St. Louis.

Yes I'm registered. I've been a PE for over 8 years.

Yeah, for the ones not good enough to be HORNETS! :p

So you're to blame! ;) :p

I never took the FE, so no plans to take the PE. But as a Mechanical Engineer, taking those is not nearly as important as other engineers. My company, and all of the others that I interviewed with, told me that they don't care if I have it or not, one even told me that they prefer engineers that don't have a PE. Since I didn't need it for work, I didn't take the test, I wasn't going to take the 8 hour long FE for fun!:p

Unfortuantely that is a key difference. If the economy wasn't down the tubes there would be alot more engineering projects in the Twin Cities and I would have no problem having plenty of work. As Winger mentioned I have very marketable skills unfortunately that's a moot point if there isn't work to be had because the State doesn't have the money to fix it's traffic congestion problems. So I'm forced to use the training I gained in Minnesota to fix the roadway issues in other states while my fellow Minnesotan get to be stuck in traffic. It's a win/win situation right.

Minnesota tax players got to supplement my training (college tuition) and aren't reaping the benefits even though I would love to solve the roadway problems in Minnesota.

Thanks for the story gmann. It helps to know what decisions other people have made.

You have no idea how many projects I've worked on in the Twin Cities. Think about that the next time you're driving in the Twin Cities. Be afraid. Be very afraid. :D

It's fun for me to drive on road that I helped design. It's sort of my legacy. Although hopefully someday I'll have a wife and kids that will be my real legacy.

I don't know the particulars of being a Mechanical Engineer but as a Civil Engineer having your Fundamental Engineer and Professional Engineering licenses makes you alot more marketable.
