Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #186: Summer Heat

Good Morning Lodge.

One thing our vacation proved is that I truly am a flatlander. I did not handle driving in the Siera Nevada well at all. I was the old guy using the turn-outs to let others pass me. It is all any phobia of heights. If we were on a steep, winding road with trees on both sides I was fine and kept up. But if there was an awesome view of the drop to the valley floor I tensed up badly and slowed way down. Leaving the town where we rented a VRBO required going down a very steep grade. Options were a long, winding road or a shorter, steeper grade (the old road), I took the shorter route but I was a wreck at the bottom.

When I visited Rocky Mountain National Park (passenger) with the Geists, they would tell me "look left" or "look right" so I would not be seeing the dropoffs, b/c I am not a fan of heights, either. :o

St John had some really scary drop offs. I would have been worse if I was driving. It wasn't the steepness (not a fan) so much as the no verge next to the road and the extremely narrow roads.

Good Morning Lodge!

I have jumped out of an airplane. Heights don't bother me. However, as I get older I find it more and more difficult to climb the ladder to get on the roof as I get that vertigo feeling.

I'm the opposite, love those drives. This might be the best ever...but not for George. ;)

It's entirely a height phobia for me. At times it has been better, at times worse. When my jobs forced me onto roofs and high scaffolding, it git much better. When I haven't pushed myself, it's gotten worse. Clearly, I need to challenge myself more on it to get over it.

The first time I went skiing in the mountains (Colorado in college), I was skiing like crap the first two days. Third day I was much better, I finally realized it was because it was snowing and I couldn't see all the way down the mountain. From then on I focused on the slope right in front of me and skied better for the rest of the trip.

For my job, I regularly am elevated about 30-35 feet in the air, so I've gotten used to that, but only in THAT setting. Tell me to climb a roof, and I'll tell you where to go. ;)

Had a great lunch with the church regulars, seems to be that everyone is making a point to make the Sat lunch time, given that there are an unspecified number of days left that this branch will be open. If they follow policy (4 wks notice to employees), then it will be open past Labor Day. That's about all we know. It's like a very slow death march. :(

Good evening. Sorta. Stuck in limbo. My body is tired, but my mind is wide awake. Hate it.

Up all night by myself to stay on night mode, rewatching the West Wing. I so very much wish it was real.

Good morning Lodge.

French toast, bacon, locally grown strawberries and raspberries have been served for breakfast.

Pork shoulder is in the smoker (has been for a few hours), getting ready for tonight. And everything is prepped for brewing my Christmas beer, a Mint Coffee Stout, with a few variations for fun.

Yes, it is. Went into the market and it was pleasant. Came out and it felt like a blast furnace.

Eggs benny with smoked salmon and N/A mimosas (half OJ / half club soda) have been served for Sunday brunch here in NY. Thinking about wandering next door to some place that serves gourmet bacon flights for "dessert".

It's my last day in NYC. I did the Rockefeller tour and Top of the Rock this morning, got all my skyline shots.

I didn't know that you need shots if you see the skyline. What disease are you likely to catch if you don't? ;)
