And when that fails the government writes you a big check. :D

Don't really need that. Crop insurance works that it guarantees a certain $/acre, so we're protected whether a natural disastet hits or if the bottom falls out of the market. We're too smart to rely on a crooked government.

It's an odd business. I work closely with some big time farm operations. I am always amazed at the wild swings in their profit and loss margins from year to year. One year they are rolling in cash and the next they are worried how they will provide for their families.

Plans are in the works to hit some or all of Valleyfair, State Fair, and Ren Fest in late August for my Anniversary.

The last time I was at the Ren Fest, I might have been 11 or 12 years old. My parents would take me almost yearly, but then that stopped for whatever reason. Now I'm a bit uneasy about going because two of my coworkers here also work a couple booths out there.

Plan is for the livestock to be gone after this summer.

Modern farming is more about smarts than hard work. Agronomy, business management, commodities marketing, real estate investing, all important to success. Gone are the days when you just work hard and can succeed. At the same time, without livestock, it isn't nearly as much work as it used to be. We plant 24 rows at a time, can do hundreds of acres a day. Combine 12 rows or 30 feet at a time. Tractors, combine, sprayer all drive themselves via GPS. Can get a bunch done in a short time.

The evolution of farming has been crazy, no doubt. What the machines can do is crazy. Are you guys a John Deere family?

Good Morning Lodge.

Jr went to a funeral of a classmate yesterday. It was in the news locally as the boy drowned at a State Park in Northern MN. The first funeral for a contemporary for him. He knew the kid, but wasn't close. Everyone liked the kid, he wasn't cliquish as many high schoolers are, talked with anyone.

Always a tough deal. I remember my senior year of high school a sophomore on the football team passed, and it was one of the saddest and scariest things ever.

An old teacher and coach at my high school, and current U.S. House representative's 43 year old brother died while camping with his son in the BWCA on Sunday..pinned by a fallen tree. Scary. I've been numerous times with our hockey program, and we've seen some nasty storms. Sad and unfortunate situation.

I love this time of year when you all geek out about Fair food.

You'd really have to experience the MN State Fair to get it. It's a huge (yuuuge?) event out here, and the new foods will appear on the local news broadcasts tonight. All of them, perhaps even getting more than one segment.

Thank God. Nothing Runs Like a Deere; Better dead than red.

Tried a red one once, and that was enough, never made that mistake again. The thing was a pile of **** and a money pit. And even when it was running, it was like Geo of tractors.

What Clown said. One year, 'diva and hubby joined us. They were astounded, and it wasn't even one of the busiest days that year. We don't kid around when we say it's dam near a state holiday (extended). Only reason TX beats us in attendance, is b/c they go a month-long. We go 10 days.

Because of the nature of our work (need to have enough people to take care of those pesky customers) I hold a vacation draft every year. There are 17 people on the team and the most weeks with the most demand are 1) week between Christmas & New Year's and (tie) 2) the week that includes July 4th & 2) the two weeks prior to Labor Day.

It's the one time of the year where I gain weight.

State Fair time is always an awesome time, and a great way to kick off football season too.

The 4th of July is hands down my favorite holiday of the year. There's something about celebrating America starting with a parade, then hundreds of people waist deep in the water at the lake. Grill up a huge meal to refuel. Ending the night viewing fireworks from the boat, and a campfire lakeside? Can't wait!

I gotta say Christmas, for those who make it simple, anyways. Dinner, family, friends. That's it. Just get together and enjoy the good things in life.

Christmas is #2 for me. I'm blessed that I've spent every 4th of July weekend my entire life with my family as well, which is a huge plus. My mom's dad died when she was 18, so I never got to meet my grandpa on that side...He served the country in the Korean War.. We're always on the boat together and every time a firework that is super loud with a big bang, we yell "Report!" It was tradition and has just carried on since; I know it sounds simple, but it means a lot to her.
