Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #185: Summer Activities

In today's episode of As The Shovel Hits The Telemarketers:

My grandfather was in WWII. My mom's cousin's name is on the Vietnam Wall (KIA in 1970, IIRC). My dad served from 1970-1973. And you're going to cold call me and badger me about a donation to a fund that I've never heard of, and haven't had time to research? Are you f-ing kidding me??

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #185: Summer Activities

What is he working towards these days? I don't have any solid thoughts... I never really thought there were serious opportunities as a math major. I had problems in grad school as well when I even asked our department chair for "something" to do so that I wouldn't go crazy over the summer....

It was a long ****ing summer
Environmental Studies. I think this is a matter of motivation. Other than running he lets life happen as it will. FOr someone who cahn get up to run 10 mi at 6:45 AM you would think it would not be too much effort to do other things.

Congrats to Jr. His boss must live in cake land.:)

En route to Country Fest in Cadott, WI for the next two nights.

I was told to expect a job offer with a start date of July 11th.. Really exciting opportunity that after reviewing, I believe I will end up taking.
COngrats!

I made the mistake of donating to the local vets group. I was receiving calls from vets groups in bunches. We only call you once a yr. OK, let me look it up in Quicken~ hmm it seems you have called me about 3 months ago, no you have never called me, No I don't care if this is a 'special' appeal. Some of these guys get really nasty. Got so fed up I stopped donating to them all and tell them why every time they call.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #185: Summer Activities

If I'm going to donate to the vets, I'll do it the old fashioned way and go get **** faced at the VFW.

I bought a "FTWGA" (For Those Who Gave All) shirt sold by Chive (website) which helps Special Operation Wounded Warriors (96 rating for charities; not affiliated with Wounded Warrior Project, which is apparently NOT a good charity).

Folds of Honor is supposed to be a decent charity, too, although I have done minimal research, personally. But no, I'm not going to open up my checkbook on a cold call.

I hear you on a cold call. Just echoing bbdl's sentiment: I'll donate to stuff I wanna donate to.

Another good veterans charity is the Fisher House Foundation. Basically they're exactly like Ronald McDonald Houses for hospitalized veterans to give their families a place to stay nearby.

Heard of them. They good.

Good Morning, Lodge!

Maintenance Day at work. I get the wonderful job of working on the large format printer. Plus side is that we are going back to 2pm Fridays this summer. We are having a cookout and at 2 we can drink again.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #185: Summer Activities

My group had its monthly happy hour last night, and it turns out there's a decent bar nearby that has 2-for-1 happy hour specials. Can't argue with that. At any rate, on the way from the bar to catch the LRT train I came across a guy who was pushing a stroller, yelling at and threatening his girlfriend/wife/sister/whatever on an otherwise empty street, about a block west of the new Vikings stadium. I turned my head only to see the woman tearing up. While I couldn't really understand the threats he was yelling at her, they must have been bad because when I got to my LRT platform he started threatening me should I call the cops, telling me he'd whoop my arse if I pulled out my phone to call the cops. Good times.

Sitting in a restaurant, watching two old men drink longnecks, and I'm getting full-on Rick-rolled at the moment.

Heard of them. They good.

Thought of another good one: Stand Down. They do occasional gatherings in the community for homeless veterans - clothing, food, blankets, hygiene, help finding a job, etc.

It's funny how camping has evolved for me/g family over the years. For most of my life I tented it and definitely earned my stripes. Now we have a rv. Today it has been storming and pouring rain and such. We have been holed up in the rv since early this morning. Climate controlled comfort. After the boys read they put in a dvd (Miracle) and we made some popcorn in the microwave. Meanwhile, I am cooking some tasty beef in the smoker.

I'm sure he could always pester the profs about an extra hand... But that may mean working for free.

I think I'd stress on him that it'll help with grad school and income later on... Lot of your value is being set right now.
