Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #184: The 2016 Frozen Four

There are some around here that have rules for cable, any yard displays/gardens/flags/etc, and then even stuff like parking in the driveway for too many days. Not kidding.

One of the many reasons that, if we move at some point, it will be to further out into the country. God it sucks living in towns.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #184: The 2016 Frozen Four

My biggest peeve: you "own" your yard, but not really, but kinda, unless we don't like what you're doing. And there's a big list.

You don't own your lawn. Period. The exterior and structural integrity of the building is communal and therefore maintained and insured by the association. So, like living in an apartment, you have an H06 insurance policy to insure the interior of the building only. (The difference for an apartment renter is that your policy would be for $5-10K in value while a townhouse owner would have around 20% the value of the house in order to cover things like carpet, cupboards, appliances, paint, etc. for the wall in addition to what apartment dwellers would cover.)

As I said, I love my apt. Broke? Fix it. Wore out? Fix it. This is not working? Fix it. And honestly, for the area I'm living in? The rent is a steal. A couple of blocks either way? Up that rent by about 100 bucks minimum.

I just don't like people enough to want to live by others except for my wife.

I know these things. I hate the illusion that you "own" your property. As for people, bbdl, I have seen maybe 3 neighbors in the 10 years I've been here. I like it that way.

Regardless, they're still less than 30 feet from you when you sleep.

Yeah, I think this is the case for most of us apartment folks. I see the guy across the hall occasionally when he takes his dog out, as well as the guy upstairs when he's coming in/out. I'm cordial with them, but beyond the pleasantries, we never talk.

You are way far ahead of me on the neighbor scale. Way far ahead.

Truthfully, I rent a condo that is treated as an apartment. It's in a condo sub. The buildings surrounding me are condos, and I deal directly with the owner, who previously rented the place to her own daughter.

I won't own a townhouse for this reason. If/when we buy a house, it'll be our house with space away from the neighbors. While our neighbors are pretty innocuous, that hasn't been the case in other apartment situations in which I've lived. My only knock is that the upstairs neighbor smokes quite a bit on his porch, which means we can smell it when our slider is open. We occasionally also hear his TV, but it's not overly disruptive. I look forward to living in a place where we do our own lawn care as I sleep during the day and sometimes our complex does lawn/outdoor care during a sleep day/work night.

And don't get me wrong, when I retire, it's Two Harbors or somewhere in CO, away from EVERYONE. Quote the great Greta Garbo, "I just want to be left alone." But until then...give me suburbia, and apt life.

Careful what you wish for. My memories of mowing the lawn, weed whipping, trimming bushes, etc. every week from age 12 to 18 are a strong reminder of why I don't want my own lawn/gardens yet. :D

That never bothered me. Even shoveling snow. It was actually relaxing. Now, mind you, I would rather NOT do it, but it didn't BOTHER me.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #184: The 2016 Frozen Four

I'd mow every day if the grass grew fast enough. Love it.

Shoveling snow, on the other hand, can suck it.
