Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #182: Snow!

What idiot came up with this plan? Haven't they read any of the latest research on work spaces? Have no idea why this description riled me up but it sounds beyond stupid and less likely to foster a healthy/productive work environment work environment

Which part has you riled up, the lack of privacy or the overly sterile environment?

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #182: Snow!

We had a tour of our new office located near the new Vikings stadium (not permitted to call it by the sponsor's name - freaking cult-like about that, I swear). My group will be on the 14th floor, that's the top floor assigned to a group as the building only has 15 stories and the 15th floor will be a commissary/common area of some sort. We're kind of a big deal around here.

But the new building will have a lighted sign of the company name on the roof, so you got that going for you.

Gurt, listen to gmann, it sounds like he knows whereof he speaks.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #182: Snow!

I think I got it.

Get him high and tell him to stop being such an arrogant *****.

Nobody's suggested a hooker for a BJ yet, but mookie should be along soon. ;)

I knew I could count on Lodge.

:D

Not only that, but it's aimed at the sky and intentionally not visible from the streets! All because we wanted to "photo bomb" the sponsors of the new Vikings stadium. I still can't believe that term was used in the official court filing. :D

Oh, all of it. Seen some stuff on the trend to have no personal space, generic spaces that has shown it is not conducive to productivity. SOme places have tried it, had poor results and have reverted. Also, new building, no plants? Plants help to clean the air of chemicals, off gassing etc. I cannot understand dehumanizing a space, discouraging personality to show through. People aren't machines. they are all unique. Pretending they aren't, treating them like just another number is counter-intuitive to trying to team build, etc

When I really ponder it- it is part of a trend I see in medicine to dehumanize and standardize everything with no consideration for the person.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #182: Snow!

Thinking about getting a tablet. WOuld like something that I can connect to a camera, has a screen that is at least 10 inches. Anyone have any thoughts? Initially I wanted something I could offload pics to to be able to then dump to a thumb but now realizing that I have enough SD cards to probably survive the 2 weeks I am gone. Really don't want to deal with something that has different cords and adapters. Don't want Apple (not because of the cartoon character). Thinking about a Microsoft Surface. Anyone have any ideas?

I can't seem to find anything that is recent that will help me whittle. Used to be you could go on cnet to get a good questionaire but they have restructured.

What you're describing for needs, it sounds like a Surface is your best option. With exception to hard drive space, they're basically designed to replace a laptop PC and have the USB ports to handle peripherals.

Truly, the lack of plants surprised me. They tout the building a being very green, LEED platinum rating and all that (probably means the toilets won't flush properly). What could be more green than keeping plants to help filter the air?

As to the dehumanization, well, there's talk about a lack of personal affects allowed on the desks too. I think this comes down from corporate because the new style of office, for all floors except those used by Trust Operations, will not have assigned seats; people are to simply find a space where they're comfortable, or something - I don't have any specs on that. Their building-wide policy didn't take into account the 13th and 14th floors, where we do have assigned desks. There will be generic corporate art on the walls, the break room has minimalistic furniture that has a very Scandinavian vibe (MN stereotyping, I think), and some 1970's reject tile pattern around the sink and such. Also, no toaster or freezer available or permitted, though we do have a walk-in refrigerator and a couple microwaves. Oh, and it'll be a few months before any of the commercial space has occupants in the building, so the skyway in the building will be pretty much useless, like St. Paul's.

Thanks. So expensive. I don't need it to take the place of a laptop. Looking at a Surface 3. It seems to do what I want. I like to be knowledgeable about what I am researching and I can't seem to absorb what I am reading about options, etc. Before I would just pull the cord and buy whatever. Now I need to be careful about $. That part is making me paranoid about purchasing but right now there are some sales that are pretty good.

May want to give some thought to the Lenovo Yoga as well.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #182: Snow!

When they butt our new tower next door to our building, the workspaces were all redone. Sounds somewhat similar to Clown's new place. We do get plants but the smaller cubes with no overheads was meant to encourage collaboration. All it did for me was make my cube a total mess. We've been going through a Lean process as well, which is meant to minimize clutter. Ha ha ha ha! I deal with dimensional stuff given I work on our merchandise catalog. We have huddle/focus rooms too. But certain people go in there to work uninterrupted which is not what they're meant for. When I need to sit with my manager to talk about something private, there is never any one that is open. It's annoying.

Finished our third event in three days. Kinda wiped. It's about 85 here and I'd like to go sit by the pool. I may just hang in here because it really is hot. If I wasn't planning to go into one of our offices tomorrow I might be forced to work. I was so exhausted yesterday that as I was watching a show on my iPad last night, I dozed off. I think I'll finish that show and then go out to dinner. The BU-Notre Dame game is on NBCSN tomorrow night but as luck would have it, it's the only sports station this hotel doesn't offer. There a BWW really close so I think I'll go there to eat and pray they'll let me have one of the TVs.,it will be 5:30 here so I'm hoping that will be OK.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #182: Snow!

Well... the Hawks lost so I guess *ht, but then again... we picked up Andrew Ladd today. :D

In other news, the boy is being recruited hard for a summer travel lacrosse team by a coach he played for last year on a different travel team.

This new team plays at higher level tourneys that get scouted.

This coach is at a different high school (near Milwaukee) and has put a lot of his own players into the NCAA from D-1 through D-3.

The only reason to do this team is if it's an investment in a (possible) future of at least D-3. Spoke to the boy and he'll need to commit to grades and off-season work.

He claims to want to pursue this opportunity.

Would be cool to look back on this several years from now as one of those turning point moments.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #182: Snow!

Got back from watching UAA's Women's basketball team win their Conference's Regular Season title. 31-1. And they just smashed the team that gave them the 1.

Night got ruined a bit by the old guy behind me complaining the whole *ing time. "Well they were up by 30 and now look!" Like dude, they're up by 21 Sierra Tango Foxtrot Uniform!
