Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #180: Holiday Onslaught

:rage: Just had the bait and switch pulled on me at work. Worked 12 hours Monday when I was supposed to work 4 and just got a text that I should work 12 tonight instead of 4 since they have a lot of devices (adjuncts keeping people alive) and are busy. How do you say "no" knowing your coworkers will be short staffed or are reliant if the staffing office to float them an other nurse who may not know the unit as well and the impact that could potentially have on a person's life?
You tell them that you've already made plans for your time off work.

You say no because if you don't you screw yourself AND your co-workers if you say yes. Say yes and it allows them to keep up the practice of renegging on time off, understaffing and not being responsible for planning correctly. Chronic problem in nursing where the admins screw the staff because they feel guilty saying no. Probably too late to say no now but remember that the next time you get called. Tell them you cannot work because you have other plans that cannot be broken, that is why you arranged it that way.

The icing on the cake is that they had the stones to ask via text.

Yup.

The joke at my work is "If you work faster, you might look marginally better than the others, but they give you more work. And no reward."

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #180: Holiday Onslaught

Boom. Except for the reward part. To get the reward you have to annihilate your life for months though.

That's how I kinda ended up. While I love my new position, I know quite a few others had ZERO desire to do this. Main reason? You work alone.

Good Morning, Lodge!

Heading to Milwaukee. Still hoping the snow system tracks south so there is minimal snow.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #180: Holiday Onslaught

That's why I don't work a job like yours. Cause I would say no .

That sucks.
I did end up saying "no"

You tell them that you've already made plans for your time off work.
I actually have plans for today (Friday). I was dreading them a bit as I was supposed to work until 7am - really 8am by the time report and documenting is done (haircut at noon, concert in Boston at 8). I was planning on being exhausted for these activities, so when I was offered the opportunity to leave early on Thursday in exchange for Monday, I was excited - so the idea of going back to being exhausted for these events was totally unappealing.

This seems to be a chronic issue at the new place - same as the old place. The staff was supportive and I only had to stay until 2345 to wait for my replacement - then report, handoff, and a 45 minute drive in the pouring rain. Worth it though to chill this morning. When I took this job, I made a pact with Matt that I would make much more of an effort to put us first (rather than the hospital) and not work a billion hours a week.

I actually prefer text to them calling at 11am in the middle of my sleep during the day.

Sounds like healthcare... :(

Indeed.

Resting this morning - ended up not going to bed until 0125 this morning, but woke up with the husband at 0600 this morning. Have spent the morning deciding what style to do with my hair, how much redder I can make it without looking ridiculous, and relaxing. Plan still is haircut, then making bread, then dinner (shrimp scampi), then concert in Cambridge with the hubs.

And that is why I put my phone into airplane mode before I go to sleep.

I never do that, but I will turn my phone to silent and keep it in another room now that I no longer have to be reachable 24/7 for emergencies.

I use a sleep management app that involves setting the phone on my mattress so it can track my sleep state and hold the alarm until I'm coming out of a sleep cycle. When I set the alarm, the phone automatically silences. I throw it in airplane mode just to be safe (it used to do it automatically, but it can't on newer versions of Android.)

Happily, sleep mode still exists on Apple devices. I have that set on both my tablet and phone, but silence both of them partly out of habit and partly because weekend sleep happens later than weekdays.
