Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #179: Crisp Autumn Weather, Football, and Hockey
There must have been a full moon at the ice arena tonight. I get there at 6 PM, ready to work a 7 PM game. There was already a game going, so I watched that, thinking it was the 3rd period, and I'd just catch the end of it before the one I was working. I couldn't figure out why the goaltender wasn't being pulled, being down by a goal with a minute to go. He didn't budge. No one told him to. Turns out that it was only the 2nd period, that game started at 5:30, and my game wasn't scheduled until 8 PM. So here I am, 2 hours early because I can't read a schedule, and wondering why the goaltender wasn't being pulled in the 2nd period, because apparently I cannot read a scoreboard, either.
We knew that game would push ours back about a half hour. Then, late in the 3rd period, the scoreboard freezes, and then goes out. Lovely. We're already behind by a half hour, and darned if this game doesn't get tied in the last minute of regulation (we think. We're not sure exactly how much time was left), so off they go into overtime, without a functioning scoreboard. That game ends, we do what we need to do to get our game going, and off we go, minus a scoreboard for our game, too. We go the first two periods without incident, and without scoreboard. Right after that got fixed during 2nd intermission, the goal judge lights go out. So here I am in the goal judge's box for the 3rd period without a light. Even better. Naturally, I see 3 goals in about 8 minutes, where I just shrug my shoulders when the puck goes into the net.
It's just one of those nights where you sit and laugh, knowing that everything that could go wrong, will. During the first game, I was telling people that we were headed to OT, about 5 minutes before the game got tied, just because. It was that kind of night.
