Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #179: Crisp Autumn Weather, Football, and Hockey

Good Morning Lodge.

Sorry to learn of OP's passing.:(

Spent the weekend up north with Mrs. So Jr took a buddy to watch the Gophers * the bed against the Catamounts.

Mrs and I saw lots of pretty leaves and scenery, took a bike ride, had massages and ate some decent food. Stayed at Giant's Ridge Lodge near Biwabik and drove the Superior National Forest Scenic Byway down to the North Shore. Ate at the Rustic Inn in Castle Danger and bought a pie to take home with us. Very nice weekend, only issue was taking about 40 minutes to go about 5 miles on Hyw. 61 (yes,, that highway 61 from Dylan's song) going into Two Harbors. Had bicyclist pass us on the shoulder. Just a long back-up from the stop lights in town and all us leaf peepers heading back to the Cities on Sunday.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #179: Crisp Autumn Weather, Football, and Hockey

Back to work. May take one of my extra remaining vacation days on Friday, haven't decided yet. The wife is working Sunday-Thursday this week, so we'd both have Friday off.

Going back down to the farm next weekend. My dad's been having a stressful harvest, with the hired hand having 3 accidents so far. On Friday, before I got there, he had a heavy load on the grain cart (40k-50k lbs), and went down too steep of a hill (actually, a hill right by where goldy and his kid go turkey hunting), started to lose control and panicked. He tried to turn sideways on the hill, but the cart had too much momentum, and it jackknifed. The auger went through the cab, busted the whole cab up, blew out the 2 outer duals, and bent both outer rims, bent up a bunch of stuff. Probably about $30k damage to a $180k tractor that is less than a year old. They got a new one from the dealer and were going again pretty quickly, but it still is a big blow.

Dad needed Saturday to relax. He was trying to get out of his plans, but we told him to just go, and that I had everything under control for Saturday. So he and some buddies (one of which owns many banks, is a Notre Dame alum, and owns his own private jet) flew to South Bend for the Notre Dame-Navy game. Only minor issues on Saturday while he was gone, overall went very well. Had a minor breakdown for about an hour, the forward driveshaft (that drives the gearboxes for each row) on the head slid out of the sprocket. Had to tear into it, and found that a bolt came loose, that holds the sprocket onto the shaft. Pretty quick fix from there.

Both nights, Saturday and Sunday, I saw the same HUGE buck in the same place. I saw him from quite a ways away on Sunday (just got a glimpse as he jumped into the woods on Saturday) and stopped to get a picture. It is on my phone, from about 200 yards, at dusk, so it leaves much to be desired, but you can see the silhouette of the deer, with a massive rack, so it gets the point across. Not a huge spread (just a bit past the ears), but it is a very tall rack, 15-18 inches above his head. I'm thinking he's a big 10 pointer.

You guys looking at a record harvest like many farmers are this year?

I don't know if it is a record, but it is very good. All of the fields I combined this weekend yielded over 220 bu/acre, which is good. Big chunks of areas in the 240-260 range, and the last field, that I just started on Sunday night had long stretches of 280-310 bu/acre, which is unheard of.

Question for those of you that travel frequently. It has been quite a while since I have rented a car.
Who should I go with and how can I get the best deal?

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #179: Crisp Autumn Weather, Football, and Hockey

Both Enterprise and National are companies my company has relationships with so I use them. Mostly National, they're just a bit cheaper.

I would suggest looking at all their websites as well as sites like Kayak. I would sign up to get emails as you often get last minute deals that are pertinent.
Personally I almost always use National since I can use Mother Minings contact for personal rental and have been very happy with them.

We use Enterprise when we have to rent a car. Always been reliable and affordable. Also get a slight discount through USAA.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #179: Crisp Autumn Weather, Football, and Hockey

My company primarily uses Hertz, sometimes enterprise. I've never really had issues with either.

I've personally rented through Avis, Budget and Alamo as well, no issues there either.

I'm sure sfis can tell you his thoughts on Thrifty ;)

Beat me to it :D :D :D laughing like a hyena

We used to use National/Enterprise at work, now have to use Hertz. I much prefer National/Enterprise over Hertz. I have had some ****ty, dirty cars with Hertz, and they all have an annoying as hell navigation screen that you can't tutn off.

Yeah, I can tell you about Thrifty (DON'T EVER RENT FROM THEM!!!).

Rented through thrifty once. In San Diego. Felt like a refugee waiting for the shuttle bus at the airport for what I swear at least 30-45 minutes. It got so ridiculous we started counting busses for other companies that passed by, think we saw 7-8 from every other company. When it finally did come we had to wait at least another 30 minutes at the da#m place to get the car - I remember thinking if I had gone with National we would have been on the beach already. The one time a company didn't send me a "how did we do" survey.

Was not at all impressed with any aspect of their operation.

Can't say I remember what company my employer used when I did business trips, but they were nothing special, nor anything horrible.

Trying to figure out what I'm going to do on my day off on Friday. There are some options, but I also know that if Surly's Darkness Day goes as planned next week, my Fun Budget will take a bit of a hit, so that influences some things.

Would you care to have lunch with your Goddaughter, LGF2, their mom, and their granny?
