Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #175: More Spring Cleaning

Morning. At Tampa Intl, little over an hour to my flight through Atlanta.

As the others have said, while airlines recommend 2 hours for domestic flights, you're almost certainly fine at 75-90 minutes. Absolute minimum of 45 minutes (some airlines will accept bags at 30 minutes, but it depends on airport as well).

FWIW, I generally aim for 60-75 minutes, and have never had an issue.

I find it really depends on the airport, the date, and the time of day. Also, add more time for intl.

I would never risk 45 minutes with a flight out of Atlanta for example. Far too risky with as busy as they can be.

Good Morning, Lodge!

The last flight I was on was a puddle jumper to Milwaukee. As I was at Terminal 2, I had well over an hour to kill.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #175: More Spring Cleaning

That's universal. Frankly, 1 hour is okay from my past experiences in the last 4-5 years. Flew at least once a year, mostly twice a year, early early flights (7-8am mostly). Just be prepared. No metal on person, no checked bags (I can pack 3-4 days of clothes in a LEGAL carry-on). Never had problems.

The difference being suggested versus required & I seem to recall two hours is required at the Las Vegas airport or your seat could be at risk.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #175: More Spring Cleaning

How would an airline know if you were at the airport or not now that we have online check in?

I doubt they think I got there 23 hrs early. :D

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #175: More Spring Cleaning

If possible, don't use the center security line at MSP. EVERYONE uses that one. See if there is another one open on the ends. They usually are, and no lines. Other than that, the airport stuff isn't bad at all.

Center lane is TSA Pre only and priority access for people flying business class, etc. They closed 2 or 3 other lanes, and they're pushing everyone to go to the security lines on the far southern side of the terminal, gate 6, I believe it is labeled.

Well, my streak is over today. My wife has told me I have to go to the doctor for the first time in 10 years. I have had a cough for a few weeks, and mid-last week it was pretty much gone, then on Friday I woke up and it was worse than ever, since then it has become a deep chest cough. I'm worried it is now bronchitis. Funny, bronchitis is what has now caused my last 3 trips to a doctor.

Checked bags add literally one or two minutes. It's security that can be a *****.

When I was leaving Boston it took 38 minutes to get through security. If I had gotten there an hour early I would have been at risk of missing the flight. I've seen up to an hour in Minneapolis before.

Get there 90 minutes early. Unless it's before 5 AM or after 10 pm. If you're early, no big deal. Find a place to grab a preflight snack or coffee and find a primo seat at the terminal.

Yep. Agreed on all counts. I always check a bag, it adds nearly no time, and I've never had a problem with it. Plus, it makes boarding so much easier, and you don't look like a ***** trying to shove a bloated rollerboard in an overhead bin. People that abuse carry-on are a huge pet peeve of mine.

Unless I know that an airport is always a breeze (Indianapolis, for example), I always show up 90 minutes early. I have gotten to know MSP well enough that I know when it will be a *****, and when I can get there a little later.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #175: More Spring Cleaning

I don't check a bag, but again, I keep my carry on under my seat. I hate those dooshes that try and bring a regular-sized bag as a carry on.

Happily, I'm flying Southwest, so it's out of the Humphrey terminal - Terminal 2. From what I remember of that terminal, everything there is much quicker than the Lindbergh terminal.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #175: More Spring Cleaning

Getting through security is the main reason to get to any airport at least 90 minutes before a flight. The lines at McCarron are some of the longest I've ever seen so you need to build in that time. I would never plan to be there any less than 90 minutes. Getting to Las Vegas, it's one of the nicest and easiest airports to get through. Large and easy bagage claim. The taxi line is enormous but it's like a well-oiled machine and it moves really quickly. I tell people I'm not a nervous flier. I'm an anxious traveler. I want to make sure I'm there in case there are delays or cancellations or bad weather, etc. I don't mind sitting at a gate with extra time.

Back at work - it really helped to have a three-day weekend. Still not 100% but definitely much better than I was. Now trying to dig out from a bunch of stuff and catch up on things I've missed.

I'm the same way. 2 hours early to the airport, no exceptions. I also love to schedule longer layovers - that way if there's a delay on one of my flights I'm not totally hosed.

I can go find a bar and have an adult pop and fart around on wifi. Plus airports are Ingress goldmines. Dem unique captures yo. (Mobile phone game that uses GPS, kinda like geocaching but even nerdier.)

40 degrees, overcast, snow flurries and windy...

I wanted this weather for here while I was in St. Lucia, not now.

:p

In that case, as long as you're there 15 minutes early, you're fine. :p

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #175: More Spring Cleaning

I always try and be early to the Airport as well, generally about 2 hours prior to my flight. Which for me, includes leaving my house 3 and a half hours prior to my flight.:) I always try and fly out of Humphrey if I can, and then you do indeed have a little more leeway.

Sorry if it was asked before, but are any of you TSA Pre Check people?
