Good morning Lodge. We have our department summer outing today. Going to one of the Boston Harbor islands for the day. It's sunny and hot, though it may rain towards the end of it. I may have to go in the office when we dock to take care of a few things as I'm taking tomorrow off. Maybe I can deal with stuff from home without it. Even though I'm off I will most likely be working for a good part of it. Oh well.

Interesting to hear the job stories. As you guys know, I've been very fortunate the last few months to be working on our partnership with the US Olympic Team. It's been fun, but challenging as my bosses are starting to freak out a bit. Plus, one of the business units seems to be making a land grab wanting more control over it. My direct manager is worried about the future and whether certain responsibilities will disappear and we'll be left without any work. Not sure how to proceed. I know I need to get on Linked In and I should probably start networking a bit. I'd really hate for it to go away. It has been overly busy for me the last few months and doesn't seem to be letting up but.....I'm working on some cool stuff.

The positions I'm looking at are just with another group, that is actually pretty closely aligned/related to my current group. We are encouraged to move around, and change positions every 3-5 years, and I'm going on 5 years in this role, so it is pretty much expected that this move should be happening soon. The reason I haven't done it yet is because I generally really have liked the work I am doing now.

Now I need to figure out which position to apply for. There are 2 I'm considering, one that is a little bit of a reach, based on my experience, as it asks for 10 years experience, but I knock all other requirements out of the park, probably enough so that based on my resume I'd be the most qualified one applying. The other has almost the exact job description, but it is less responsibility, one pay grade lower, and only requires 4-6 years experience. I really want to go for the bigger role, as I feel I am qualified, but I don't want to look silly in front of some pretty big-time managers for applying and interviewing for a position that is over my head. Not sure what to do.

Find out as much as you can about both positions. If such transfers are that common and encouraged, I would consider approaching your current boss and find out if he or she would support you in going for the more senior position based on what you've accomplished thus far and the skills that you have. Sometimes the experience requirement gets waived for the right candidate, especially if you won't be supervising anyone in the new role.

Every once in awhile, a few pearls of wisdom manage to escape from the gray matter between my ears. If this keeps up, I might have half of a functioning brain by the time I retire. The other half will be filled with boring corporate buzzwords. ;)

I just picked up a pair of tickets for the Black Crowes show for when they're in town November 9, picked them up during a presale event. It turns out that it can be good to get on some of those junkmail lists from the right radio station. The last time they came through town they were playing at the MN Zoo's amphitheater, but I couldn't buy tickets because they sold out about five minutes after going on sale to the general public.

Afternoon.

gf delayed in Canada due to plane issues. So instead of getting home at normal time, it will be a late night. Sucks sitting at airports all day with nothing to do.
