Got any extra shotguns you want to sell? Jr is planning to hunt turkeys again this spring (on bigblue's family farm probably) and while we could borrow one again, it might be time for him to own one. If we do buy one, I'll look at one with interchangeable barrels so he could use it for slugs for deer too.

No. I think I only own two or three and none are for sale.

Buy him a decent shotgun. Since it's his first one he will own it forever and it will be something that he will cherish.

Plus, if the zombies ever find their way to BettyCrockerville you will be thankful.

Since Weatherby doesn't make a semi auto slug gun anymore, I'm going to get the PA 08 Upland combo, so I have both barrels.

For a first shotgun, there isn't much better than a Remington 870. They're cheap, its easy to get both barrels and it is reliable. I started with a Remington 870 .20 gauge, and I still have it. I have a standard barrel and a slug barrel. Killed plenty of deer with it. I think you can pick up a used one for about $150, since there are so many of them out there.

I thought you'd appreciate this. :D

This is a comment I found on a shotgun forum about the Weatherby SAS Slug (one of which I have, for those of you that don't know):

I do believe my buddy has the only one in Canada. When he opened the box he found that the weapon jammed and would not feed or cycle. He had to send it to the Weatherby Rep for all of Canada, Dave Jennings in Pritchard B.C. Dave had to machine a large lip off the chamber that was causing the rounds to not feed into the chamber out of the tubular magazine and to jam the automatic cycling action. After my buddy got his shotgun back she shot like a house a fire, **** fine weapon to have in the face of a ****ed off grizz charge. She throws a lot of heavy lead slugs very quickly This shotgun is not for sale, not for any amount of money. You would do well and be very lucky to find one. You might call Dave Jennings of Dave Jennings Sports here in Canada and He might be able to fix you up with one.

:D :D :D :D $$$$$$$$$$$

edit: I'll let you shoot it, if you ask nicely. ;)

Pretty well, if you're Langford. :p Funny you mention them, we're in their tournament this weekend. (This is the Langford Winter Classic's 54th year -- amazing!) We've never been there, so I'm excited to see another rink, how they run their tourney, etc.

I might be over there - my God-Daughter's son plays for Prior Lake and I may head over to see him play. I will be the goofy looking one. :)

I guess that's just how it is then. The cranky old guy part of my brain wants to say, "So when do these 9 yr olds go sledding with their friends / build Legos with friends / etc? It's ridiculous!" On the other hand, there's no reason we can't go out on our own and learn how to play better, right? So yesterday after school, rather than complain some more, we went over to the local outdoor rink and played a crazy, hour-long pick-up game with a few parents and a ton of 6-to-10 year olds. It was a great time. And we adults were constantly talking to the kids, helping them think about what was going on, stick taps for a smart play, etc. That was probably worth a few practices skating around cones, don't you think?
I love this. Kids need so much more of this; almost all of the greats will tell you they learned most of the game out on ponds and what have you. There's far too many other things, such as video games, that kids do in place of skating an extra hour on a day off outdoors.

Never have really gotten into hunting as I played football and hockey growing up, and there seemed to be little time. Oddly, for a farm boy, my dad never hunted anything. He shot coons and such pests they trapped on the farm. A buddy and I are considering taking gun safety and getting into hunting pheasant and duck.

The thing with turkey is it has a low entry barrier. You don't need a dog like for pheasants (and maybe ducks). You only need a shotgun, some pretty inexpensive decoys and a call. Maybe some camo and/or a blind.

Agree!!
When I coached mites & squirts we usually just threw a bunch of pucks out of the first 10 minutes or so. Still did a few times a week with pee-wees. I'm sure the kides got more out of that time.

My .02 worth.........Regarding a false sense of security.......if you own a gun for security reasons and it is not accessible and not loaded and ready to fire it's useless and won't be there for protection. IF it is accessible and loaded and ready to fire then be prepared to use it. Not much gray area.

I mean the security part like if something similar to Aurora CO went down, chances are I really couldn't do anything about it if I was one of the first ones shot, and no way would I take a shot at the shooter unless I had a clear shot without risk of hitting any innocents, you know? ;)
But yeah, at home, it would be ready to fire, just in case. However, if I had company over, everything would be locked up all to hell.

At my home with two young kids I cannot keep a gun accessible or locked and loaded ready to fire within close proximity to my person. Way more cons than pros. Like I stated earlier, my guns and ammo are locked and stored separately. If a situation arises in which I needed to arm myself quick, I am in trouble. I do keep a five iron within arms reach in the bedroom though. ;)

A few weeks ago a guy in cityslickerville kept a loaded pistol under his pillow ( I think) and his four year old shot his two year old brother dead. Tragic. I think dad is being tried for manslaughter. I hope he fries.

Or you could live in the sticks and feel a piece of lead whiz by your head.............
