Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #160: Resolute in 2013

Found my next gun! And I might get it tomorrow! A local gun shop has a case of Nagant M1895 revolvers, that they're selling for $138 each. The Nagant M1895 was the service pistol for Russia/Soviet Union during WWI and WWII. Pretty sweet to have one, and they're cheap!

What about getting ammo?

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #160: Resolute in 2013

What about getting ammo?

I would guess it would be for show, not usage, although it'd be kinda cool to fire off at target practice. And I'm about THIS close to getting a gun/going through the classes/etc. Every day I inch closer to it. Hope I never have to fire it outside of the gun range, of course. I'm not a hunter, it'd be for a sense of false security, for lack of a better phrase.

It is pretty easily available now, from what I've learned from the research I've done. There is a company in Italy that makes it and I should be able to get it at Cabelas. Might be expensive, but it would be more of a novelty to shoot, so I don't mind.

edit: Here it is, second from bottom on the chart: http://www.cabelas.com/product/Shoo...792580;cat104691780;cat104372280#productChart

Morning, El Lodge-O.

I once came in 5th in a charity poker tournament, which won me a fancy Rabbit bottle opener. And the guy who finished 6th -- the guy I knocked out -- won a full set of poker chips. Nice ones, too. In a nice case. I shoulda lost sooner!!1! :(

Our squirt C team is at the other end of the spectrum: EVERYBODY wants to schedule us. :( We enjoyed a 13-0 whupping this weekend, and it wasn't that close. I looked at the website for the team we played -- they have practice or a game five days a week. We have two. Are we the only ones doing a real rec level team any more?

So I have to remind myself: This is the kind of atmosphere we wanted // Our league is known for being low-key: nobody gets cut; no short bench; if you miss practice for whatever reason you still play in the next game // There's lots of things my kid now does right that he was doing wrong not that long ago, and that's fun to observe. Etc. Still, hard to watch these shellackings from the stands sometimes.

FWIW, our squirt C teams skate 4-5 times a week.

Well, Brent, if you want to get one, this is one of the cheapest options you'll find. Apparently there is a huge surplus of these things, and they're dirt cheap. They don't have much stopping power (very unlike my .357 Magnum :D), but from what I read, it sounds like it is a good gun for target shooting, and would definitely still take someone down, if you had the need in a self-defense situation. The ammunition isn't too expensive, not cheap like a 9mm, but it is very comparable to the .357 Magnums.

I want stopping power without overkill/show. Sure, the Desert Eagle is an AWESOME gun, but it's really unneeded in most situations. It's pure overkill, you know? I'm looking at efficiency plus effectiveness. That sort of thing.

There are plenty that fit in that range. There are some really nice, small frame handguns made specifically for concealed carry that would be what you're looking for.

We'll talk on the trip up north this weekend.

Morning, Lodge-O.

Hey, I feel for you there. That's much the same scenario in which I played hockey. Rosemount didn't cut anyone, otherwise I would have been cut by any responsible team's coach.

Ha! Brutal, but hilarious. :)

FWIW, our squirt C teams skate 4-5 times a week.

I guess that's just how it is then. The cranky old guy part of my brain wants to say, "So when do these 9 yr olds go sledding with their friends / build Legos with friends / etc? It's ridiculous!" On the other hand, there's no reason we can't go out on our own and learn how to play better, right? So yesterday after school, rather than complain some more, we went over to the local outdoor rink and played a crazy, hour-long pick-up game with a few parents and a ton of 6-to-10 year olds. It was a great time. And we adults were constantly talking to the kids, helping them think about what was going on, stick taps for a smart play, etc. That was probably worth a few practices skating around cones, don't you think?

Not too many rec teams left. How do you stack up against Langford?

Pretty well, if you're Langford. :p Funny you mention them, we're in their tournament this weekend. (This is the Langford Winter Classic's 54th year -- amazing!) We've never been there, so I'm excited to see another rink, how they run their tourney, etc.

I own quite a few guns, 25 or so. I have rifles, pistols, shotguns and some other neat stuff. None are loaded and most are locked up with ammo stored separately. My father is a gun collector and once he passes I am going to acquire hundreds more guns.

I grew up around guns and back in the day I used them frequently but today they rarely see the the light of day.

My .02 worth.........Regarding a false sense of security.......if you own a gun for security reasons and it is not accessible and not loaded and ready to fire it's useless and won't be there for protection. IF it is accessible and loaded and ready to fire then be prepared to use it. Not much gray area.

I have a Desert Eagle .44 mag with a laser scope. It has a little stopping power. ;)

I would recommend getting a 9mm Glock.

Got any extra shotguns you want to sell? Jr is planning to hunt turkeys again this spring (on bigblue's family farm probably) and while we could borrow one again, it might be time for him to own one. If we do buy one, I'll look at one with interchangeable barrels so he could use it for slugs for deer too.
