Ah, yes, the early to mid 90's Chevy Lumina. We stopped installing batteries for those cars at the shop where I worked because it took over an hour to get the battery replaced. It was either that or charge a special fee for servicing those cars. They used special fasteners (that are very difficult to remove without causing damage to the vehicle) to keep the windshield washer fluid tank in place, and then they placed the battery under that stupid thing.

The fact that I am hand-on mechanically inclined has been a huge advantage for me as an engineer. I can't imagine doing what I do without that prior knowledge that had nothing to do with actually getting my engineering degree.

Unfortunately in my situation I agree. I'm getting way better but still a long way to go. I won't hesitate to run my designs by machinists and techs for input. Learned a long time ago they can be your best friend in making your projects work. It makes me look better for getting something that works and they appreciate being included on the front end to avoid any major issues they will struggle with.

Someone recently thanked me for being flexible in my designs. I kind of said, "you've got to be kidding if I don't listen to you guys." If soneone is doing work for you, you owe it to them to make it as easy as possible.

This right here is the exact reason I backed out of being a CS major. I was doing just fine with the coursework and understanding concepts, but I just didn't have the programming experience or practical knowledge my peers had already racked up to make it and it showed. This also is part of what led me to Civil because it was such a broad field that a lack of practical knowledge wouldn't be as much of a handicap.

Honestly, I don't consider myself that smart a person (hence why I'm a fed :P) What I am is sharp with numbers/letters/patterns and a steel trap for facts, lists, information I saw once, etc. People interpreted that as "holy crap, he's smart" when I was very young and put me on the "gifted unique snowflake" bandwagon, to somewhat both my benefit and my detriment.

I've been in that situation too and always had mixed feelings about it. I'm glad people were so impressed with what I was able to do, but never really felt all that great about it or that I did anything special. But I guess that's why you go into a field where you do have an aptitude. It becomes second nature to you because you're good at it and people that don't have the same ability are impressed by that.

As a mathematician, I never had to do anything hands-on, which is good because I tend to be a klutz. :)

Last scenario of the "regular season" today. They call it "The Humbler". My mind is still racing at 3000 mph, and I am mentally drained. Overall did all 3 problems pretty well, just need to not get as frustrated. Monday will be preparing for the PV on Tuesday. 2 runs on local and ground with the people we're running with on Tuesday. Luckily, my local PV is first, so I can get that one out of the way. I have to wait until the last run for my ground PV, but that should be a walk in the park.

NPR did a really cool piece on how there is a general lack of knowledge now because people don't tinker with stuff like they used to. A lot of the things that were simple to do are now way more intricate and cost a lot if you mess up- plumbing, mechanical stuff, electrical stuff, cars... For many people they replace things rather than tinker with them. They were talking about programs (I think in Canada) for trades that found that many of the people enrolled had little or no exposure to any sort of tinkering which severely hindered their ability to grasp what they were trying to master. Can't remember specifics but it was fascinating. I changed the gasket in my straight 6 when I was a kid. I barely can find the oil stick in my car now.

sounds like my mother... except I think she could manage to change the oil if she had to... but will let me father (more likely a specific oil change place) do it instead. I think in a different era (cultural expectations and whatnot) she might have been an engineer. She wasn't great with math but she survived organic chem somehow (home econ. degree).

Along similar lines........I had an architect design a home for me a few years back. He had a solid reputation. Cost a pretty penny and took months to get finalized. Took the plans to a few contractors for bids to build my home. Every one of them called me soon after and informed me the house could not be built. Went to the architect and for another ridiculous fee he could tweak the plans to work. W t f ?

Found a retired drafter who designed what I wanted for a fraction of the cost and turned it around quicker than shiat.

And Chevy Corsica's serpentine belt was a beech to replace, due to the layout of the engine, IIRC. I remember my brother cussing up a storm about it.

And as for today (work related), f this and this and that and this and that over there, and this and this and this. But especially f the jack wagon that decided to order a 5-pallet, 600+ filter order......10 minutes before our cutoff time. 50+ boxes, each one had to be loaded by hand onto a pallet. :mad::mad::mad:

I'm stuck at another gig. It's for a social committee's kickoff meeting, and all the speakers are trying to out-funny each other. We just have one lousy tune left! Help! I wanna go home!

I made ummmm, I don't know what to call it, maybe it is granola, but I don't know. I combined soft butter, oatmeal, flour, salt and brown sugar, baked it, then poured it out on a cutting board to cool and harden. Broke it up into chunks. Then I diced up strawberries, put the berries and the granola stuff in a bowl, topped with a little sugar and some cream...mmmm good desert.
