Good Morning Lodge!

Sorry to hear you're out, Bob, but since the government is pushing welfare up so far, enjoy the free money.

Good Morning Lodge.

Ahem, maybe a link here. . . you may not want to have a bottle opener key chain. Just sayin'. ;)

Going for a quick interview this morning. Opening came up suddenly late yesterday. Probably not the best fit, but we'll see.

There has been a link of my Mad-Town encounter found on YouTube..just what I needed to go through all of my friends..:o

Morning, all. Getting my oil changed right now, then finishing packin up, heading to st cloud for the weekend for a hockey tournament.

You're going to get an engineering degree and yet you don't even change your own oil? Wow.

I have an engineering degree and I don't change my own oil. More because of time, not because I don't know how. I just drop off my car, get a ride to work from the courtesy shuttle and pick it up when they are done.

So that's what the kids in Kato are calling it these days.

Hey, are you going to the Mt. Dew Blast? Jr's team is in that. We're getting him from school at 2 and heading up.

DP

So Jr's team faces off at 4:30 today against the team that MavHockey14 is coaching. Little small world deal going here. The two of them played together in the Posters' Game in 2011.

Take down that underage drinking hoser, Jr!

Maybe you can get him kicked out of the tournament before the game starts. I bet they frown on that behavior from their coaches. :D

Another thought from the EC concert...that is the first time I've seen the singer throw an entire guitar into the audience...but I suppose he does have a pretty sweet deal with Epiphone. Also, during These Boots some girls in the front row took off their boots and held them in the air, he grabbed the boots, pulled a sharpie out of his pocket and signed them. Those would be some pretty sweet souvenirs...I however ended up just getting a couple shirts. I usually don't buy shirts at concerts but these were to badass to not get.

Core engineering curriculums don't really teach you a lot of intricate hands-on mechanical stuff (especially Civil, which is what he's going.) It's more about the number crunching, physics, and calculating aspect of things to prepare you for the FE/PE. There are a few labs that teach you some basics, but you almost have to go to trade school to become more mechanically inclined.

I really wish they did more of that. You have to land the right internship or know mechanically inclined folks to learn that stuff.

Also, we're engineers. It's quite literally our job to be lazy. We call it "efficiency."

Which is why so many engineers are useless. Engineers (Civils and a few others are probably an exception) that don't have a grasp on the hands-on aspects are the engineers that design cars where it takes 4 hours to replace a battery because it is shoved so far down into an engine compartment. Or put bolts in places where there is no access to get a wrench into.

So, did you throw your panties on stage?

No, those are project managers. Sometimes those positions are staffed with engineers but does not involve actual engineering. I took a turn as one and it was quite an eye opener when I changed jobs and actually did engineering. Plus, most places are union shops where you are not allowed to touch anything, or have experts that are way better at that sort of thing than you are. I work with many, but they need my direction of what I want before they can do their work.

Twitch is correct. I wish they taught more hands on and it's a great thing when you can get it. What I've noticed is that engineering degrees have many specialties for certain industries. Which is great unless you plan to leave that industry. I'm one of the only engineers here without a degree taylored to the plastic molding industry which puts me at a disadvantage, but nothing you can't overcome.

To this day, the engineers I know personally are of the mechanically inclined variety. For example: WPOS is tearing apart and rebuilding his grandpa's old truck he just inherited. Fear_the _Gopher builds a backyard rink every year that's won some FSN/MN Wild awards.

Ah, yes, the early to mid 90's Chevy Lumina. We stopped installing batteries for those cars at the shop where I worked because it took over an hour to get the battery replaced. It was either that or charge a special fee for servicing those cars. They used special fasteners (that are very difficult to remove without causing damage to the vehicle) to keep the windshield washer fluid tank in place, and then they placed the battery under that stupid thing.
