Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #150: Everyone sucks... except Scarlet

Thankfully there are distant relatives who are continuing the name Baer. I am unmarried and my brother had only daughters. My father's only brother also had only daughters. My father had three male first cousins named Baer, two of whom perished in the Holocaust. The third had one son (my generation) who also has a son, now in his mid-20s. There are also several more distant relatives named Baer.

OTOH, my mother's name has died out going back to the name adoption in the late 18th century.
Well get out there and start looking for a nice 20-something to settle down with! ;) :D

After seeing what massive dip****s kids are these days (not anyone's kids in particular, just referencing the asshats I randomly see while shopping/getting gas/going to a game/etc.), I'm not so sure anyone should be reproducing anymore.

I know a few people have begged me never to have children.

Absolutely agree. We went to the mall yesterday to find a pair of shoes and it just reminded me how much I don't want to have to deal with children of my own.

Being the last male on our branch of the family tree I was always worried about having to have a son. So much so that when my 2nd daughter was born I had to go have a heart-to-heart with my last remaining aunt (who never married). I was certain I would have to keep trying until we had a son. She just looked at me and said "your dad and grandfather would not have pressured you and neither will I. Do what YOU want to do". That was all I needed to hear. The name may not go on, but the bloodline will.
tcbg's last name is fairly common, so as a whole, it isn't going anywhere, but this particular lineage will die out with him and with his brother. Stupid brother had 4 girls...you think they'd at least have had the courtesy to have a boy if they were going to have that many kids!

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #150: Everyone sucks... except Scarlet

I think the main cause for the potential death of my last name can be traced back to the 40's when my grandpa's 2 brothers were killed in a car vs. train accident, which left my grandpa and his 2 sisters as the only children. My great-grandpa had 2 brothers, but one's son only had daughters, the other's oldest son is a hermit that is probably revulsed by touching another human while the younger had 3 daughters and no sons.

FM's brother has 2 sons, and his cousins on that side seemed to all have kids right out of the gate, so no parental pressure or lineage continuation problems there. My mom has dropped hints at wanting grand kids someday, and our branch of the name may be in jeopardy, but so far no one has put down any significant pressure on me there (not that I can do much for the name thing anyway). It's just the aforementioned Facebook shrieking of how "mommiehood" is "omgthebestthingever" that is/was getting to me. I might just seek out that filter that Twitch and Brent have mentioned.

Go adopt some Haitian boy and change his last name to yours... Geez how flipping' easy!!!

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #150: Everyone sucks... except Scarlet

My brother has already had a son to carry on the family name in this branch, so no worries on that front for me. Plus, I think that most of my family consider me very ill suited to fatherhood.

I will say it again, if having a child defines your life and existence then you've done something wrong. My cousin has two kids... She's also a civ engineer and played D3 softball.

Now, that all said, if your kid becomes president or something pat yourself on the back because you probably did something right along the way (hopefully).

The kids who make you not want to deal with kids likely had parents who didn't want to deal with them either. They didn't deal with them so they were never civilized. My kid is a mediocre hockey player and student, but he is polite and well behaved and can carry on a conversation with an adult because that's how we raised him.

And remember there are a ton of things in the program, so you can let some stuff in, if you want.

As for my name, it's pretty much gonna die with my brother and I, since he decided to have girls. Of course, there is always the "oops" factor.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #150: Everyone sucks... except Scarlet

Watching WCWS final right now. These girls throw fire. One is throwing 70-72, the other girl just touched 74.

And due to the closeness of the mound, isn't 70 the equivalent to a 95mph pitch in baseball? I remember watching Jennie Finch (for more than one reason, I admit) and always hearing the announcers making the comparison.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #150: Everyone sucks... except Scarlet

It's 43 feet now. I think a few years ago it was 38 feet. Little League pitcher's mounds are 46 feet, I think.

I've never seen girls throw this hard. I've seen a couple touch 70, but these two are pushing 75. It's not going to be long before we see a girl throw 80.

EDIT: A rough, basic calculation puts a 70 MPH heater from 43 feet works out to be just under 98.5. 75 MPH would be 105.5 in this calculation (70/43 * 60.5= 98.48)

Ok, thanks. IIRC, Finch regularly hit 70-71. And since she was taller (I wanna say 6'1", yummy), that ball had a LOT of velocity (longer arms by nature, so more rotational power, or whatever you call it).
