Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #149 - Best adaptation of a movie title-and the lodgie goes

Morning!

This week is shaping up to be fairly relaxed at work. Which is good, as it should let me concentrate on getting some more things done on my move checklist.

7 weeks to go.

Is "Get a job in Pittsburgh" crossed off your list?

Mavsy, If I were a porspective employer I'd be worried about "how dumb is this kid?" for getting a public consumption and underage consumption in Madison. :p Are you still wondering about CE? Do you want me to put in touch with some practicing CEs?

We went to a Synchronized Swimming exhibition last night as one of the girls is a friend of the family. This team does not cut anyone. The first group they had out there must have been scheduled that way so all the other groups would look good in comparison. I know it is really hard and I could never do it, but then, I wouldn't try to do it in front of people. The girl we know is really good, especially given she's an 8th grader.

No need to put that on my list yet. My current job is doubling my pay to work remote, at least for the near future. You must of missed that post.

Also, I'm not sure someone without a job should be giving me a hard time. ;) :D

Good Morning lodge. My shoulder hurts like hell, slept on it wrong and now it feels all cramped up. Oh well, I'll walk it off. (and no Monster, I'm not getting a ****ing massage)

Only a couple more days before the big concert I've been waiting for for about 6 months...then probably going to see Lost Highway at TK's Friday night. Good times, good times.

Need some advice, Lodge.

I got a little postcard in the mail, one that you have to break the seal and unfold it to see what it says inside. Inside there is a check for $18.04, and it says that it is from Foreign Currency Fee Litigation Settlement Fund, and lists a website. The check looks legit, and I read all of the fine print to see if there is any "if this check is redeemed...blah, blah, blah" type clauses, didn't find any. Is this legit? Should I cash it, or does this seem like some kind of scam?

If you don't know why you got it, and its $18. Throw it away.

It's probably a settlement from your credit card company as a result of a class-action lawsuit somewhere down the line.

That is exactly what it is, it is a settlement from American Express, and I used my AE card in Scotland when I bought up a bunch of Scotch whisky, so that kind of makes sense. I just wasn't expecting it, and it is a bit odd to just get a check in the mail with no warning.

I got the same check several months ago. It was legit.

IIRC correctly, I applied about five years earlier. You may have forgotten. The minimum payment was supposed to be $25 but that was reduced due to lawyers fees. One could have applied for more with documentation, but most people that I knew didn't bother.

Edit: I just checked, I also got $18.04. It was in late December last year.

I wasn't giving you a hard time, in my current situation I am very sensitive to the difficulty of finding a new job. I saw the post, but wasn't completely sure how it would apply.

I thought you had lots of options, from some of your posts? Although it sounds like some of those companies can't afford your talent at the moment.

Ok, thanks. I guess I'll cash it then. $18 is $18, may as well use it.

That is it. Why hire a senior guy like me if they can get someone for a lot less cash to do the job. Not many department head jobs out there right now. A few years ago one firm had looked for two years before they hired me to head their department, now a number of senior guys are out looking too. I have an interview soon back downtown, but it sounds like it would be a really big pay cut for me. I'm expecting a contract offer soon that will be a little closer to my past salary.

Have you considered expanding your search out of state? I doubt you want to move, but its always an option.

So that's what the hicks in Alex are calling it these days....

And JF, I'd have to be out of work for a hell of a lot more than a couple months before I would consider moving out of state. We own our house which is paid off. We have friends and family here. There are jobs in this town, I just need to find one. I'll take a pay cut until things get better then move up again.

I'll probably get an offer from the folks I just talked with, but I'm thinking the other one I'm waiting on is probably better. Both are a step down, but the one today is at least two steps down, and with such a large, rigid corporate structure that it'll be hard to change that quickly.
