Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 145: are you giving up something for lent??

I was thinking Outback or Forrester (though apparently the Forrester is for lesbians?). Maybe the Ford Flexx? I'm trying to think of vehicles moderately low to the ground, but big enough to carry any gear you might need to take with two boys...Honda Fit or Toyota Matrix?

I know someone with a Matrix. They're decent. The Fit is an econobox and wouldn't have enough room for your stuff.

Also consider the Honda Element. They look strange as all get out, but they have boatloads of room on the inside and they're even decent in winter I hear. I've heard nothing but good things about them.

Thanks everyone. MPG pffft, just like trees..........gas is a renewable resource. Seriously though MPG is important but not tops on the list. Accessibility for little g, safety, all weather reliability and extra room are tops for me. Plus, I need something that I look cool in while cruisin for the ladies. :)

I'm now biased, but I absolutely love my VW. I have the Tiguan, which is their crossover SUV, but I can say for sure that VW is tops in the car manufacturers for safety. I've heard real good things about the Passat, but haven't been in one yet.

Not sure how much of a priority it is with you, but Subaru's tend to get pretty poor gas mileage. I'm a big fan of VW's TDI platform, although the Tiguan doesn't have it. Obviously diesel costs more than gas right now, but I believe the Passat gets up to the high 30's or low 40's with the TDI for mpg.
I have no idea what its rated at, but a Passat TDI should get mid to high 40's for fuel mileage, and I hate VW.

Nissan GT-R. (Sorry, BB.)

You can actually get them used now for around $50K.

31/43 with the manual, and 30/40 with the automated manual.
I don't go by the EPA estimates.

Twitch, that car does absolutely nothing for me. I'd take a CTSv over one of those in a heartbeat.

That's actually pretty much the entire Subaru lineup. Once they made a play for the homosexual crowd in the 80's by advertising in gay magazines, when no others were taking notice, they flocked to them in droves and have stayed pretty loyal since. It was a case study in class one time, and I still see all the different Subaru models around with the rainbow stickers on the bumpers. They're everywhere in Mpls.
We are on our second one and our fourth Subaru. Last winter when we got all the snow, we were the ones that had to go pick up our goalie because they were on the worst hill in the SW metro (not saying much, but it is a ridiculous driveway). Until the mom traded her BMW for an Outback.
My brother who's a mechanic loves Subarus. He bought one used because he got an amazing deal, and he knew how to fix what was wrong with it for cheap, and hasn't bought another brand since. I have a buddy who's the same way, less the mechanic part. I'd buy one, but the seats in those things don't fit fatties very well.

VW is really weighing down those things now. They used to get 50 on the highway back when I was car shopping. If I wasn't so concerned about fuel gelling because I had to park outside back then, I would have sprung for one.

Two other things, EPA Tier 4 probably hurt their fuel economy and I believe the EPA has adopted a different method for measuring fuel economy that hurt the TDI's numbers.

Curb weight is over 3400 pounds now.

Godfather II is on AMC now. I guess nothing else is getting done the rest of the night.

Wow, that was a good lunch. Went to a Thai place, had some kind of coconut/peanut/curry thing that was absolutely fantastic. When I first tried Thai, I wasn't a real big fan, but now that I know what to order, it is some very good stuff.

Also, got a 2012 quarter in my change. I thought it was odd that they already have 2012 currency in circulation, I guess they're on the ball this year.
Did you leave a good tip :p

So I am contemplating getting a different vehicle. I currently drive a Tahoe. Great ride but unfortunately it is too high off the ground and difficult for little g to get in and out of.

I am probably going to get a car. :( a car that can deal with all four seasons especially winter. There are quite a few options out there.

Any recommendations from the Lodge?

Subaru Outback.

Almost bought one myself, but I didn't spot any really good deals and I wanted something different from everyone else anyway.
I am on my 2nd Subaru. My driveway is a luge run in the winter. I make it up in a foot of snow. I had 2 accidents in my last one- a Ford 150 tried to drive thru my door and a kid couldn't text and hit the brake at the same time running into the back. Not a scratch on either lil or me. We put hockey stuff in there all the time as well as travel to the cottage in Maine with a week's worth of stuff and still room. I wouldn't drive anything else. Mileage is OK. better on the hwy. Also- very comf to drive. I am short, my friend is 6'4 both of us drive one with no complaints.

Good morning Lodge. Crappy weather here, though all I have is rain, rain and more rain. Some of my co-workers, though got a bit of snow and my nieces actually have a snow day. Probably because they haven't used any of them this year.

So, last night I was out having a beverage and the TV at the bar had ESPN on. Out of the corner of my eye, I see a clip of the BU-NMU national championship game. The hell? I asked hottie bartender was that ESPN or ESPN2 and then texted mookie as I had no idea why on earth that clip was being teased during SportsCenter and asked him to watch. Hottie bartender said it was probably a top ten of events that happened on Leap Day or something. I was like dude, you know I love you dearly but don't ever question my knowledge of BU hockey history. :) I informed him that the game was in late March, not February, of 1991, which was not a leap year, that I was actually at the game and still have my ticket stub. Thankfully mookie was able to text me with what that top 10 was. Extended finishes? Weird. That game was #9. It's really odd to have included that given there have been a few cooler OT games since that one. Wanted to post because I thought of 'diva when I saw it, though she was but a wee young 'un when that game happened. Was it really 22 years ago????

A few years ago, one of my friends gave me one of those iPod docking stations that is also an alarm clock and radio. The digital display also includes the date. It apparently wasn't programmed properly as it did not recognize Leap Day and now it says March 2. Not sure if I can fix that.

I was 6. That probably qualifies as "wee young'un" though, eh? Did you ever figure out why it was on?
