How is all of this expected to affect BU next season since BU is back on RPI's schedule (1/4/13 @ BU)?

Maybe I should buy a lottery ticket today.

Went to Subway, ordered a 12", was charged for a 6". See, who says fast food employee's should be required to speak fluent english? :p

I thought that all 12" subs were only $5 this month?

At least the thread is entertaining now:D

Just because the registers do the math for the kiddies, it doesn't mean it makes pretty pictures of the exact bills and coins to use. That's coming to McDonald's next week. We have to stop letting these kids think for themselves.
My cashiers seem to refuse to at times. The smallest mistake and most of them don't know how to handle it without me, and age has nothing to do with it. One of the smartest I have is only 17. One of the not so smartest is probably in his 50's.

Works out in your favor there. She'll learn when she has to balance her drawer out at the end of her shift right??
I don't think there's many places left that let them count their own drawers. That's just asking for trouble.

Chain places, perhaps. The only times I didn't have to was when I worked at Target and Home Depot. Smaller places, it was part of our end of the day tasks.

Sorry, but that's not a good measuring stick. If you're in your 50's and working as a cashier at Target, you're not looking at the best and brightest of the generation.

I'll just say this, I work with a woman who graduated from SCSU two years after I did. She had a professor in the Marketing department that she really liked, and ran into the guy a few years ago (2 or 3), and he just lambastes the kids in college these days. Back when we were in school, it was a guaranteed C or better in his class. In fact, he claimed to have never given an F until two terms prior to running into my coworker. He tells her that he had to give 18 F's that term because the kids are so using his words, "lazy, stupid and entitled." He thought it had to do with the educational system and parents' expectations that their kids get coddled. I see it in some of the people we're hiring for the low-level jobs in my office.

Just last week a kid was trying to do something in Excel, and I watched how he went about it. It would have taken him fifteen minutes to accomplish what I did with a very simple sort and vlookup function. The whole time he had this glazed look about himself, but not the look of someone on drugs. He's just not there. When I asked my buddy about him before that exchange, my buddy being the guy who hired him, he said that he was the best of the candidates - in an economy with an official U% of about 9%, unofficial rate is probably closer to 16%. It's scary.

Who knows the 50 year old's story, though? Maybe he "retired" early, and wanted something simple to do, to keep busy? Maybe he got laid off during the recession, and this was all he could find? Just sayin'. :)

As for smaller places, when I worked PT at a pizza place, only the managers/owner could count the drawers (one of them worked at the place every day). We'd empty the drawers after the lunch rush, and after the dinner rush, put the money in the safe, and at the end of the night the day's money was counted.

That's really common, actually. I had a manager at Wally World that was in that boat - out of a job, fifty-something, divorced, and wanted both something to do and somewhere to get health insurance. Good, smart guy (and liked a good Scotch every now and again), but that's where circumstances put him. Also, I just interviewed at another place with a guy who had retired from Federal service and was waiting for his pension to fully kick in. Older, still married, but wanted a little cash to supplement his and his wife's income.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 144: (Lack of) Winter Wonderland

You two are talking about reasonably intelligent people. MNS talked about a 50 year old person who gets flummoxed as a cashier. There's a difference - a big difference.

What a shi t show that is. tArrogance is not only for those in the midwest. I feel like I need to take a shower after reading some of that.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 144: (Lack of) Winter Wonderland

Even though it's apparently a law/digital property term, my girlfriend just pointed out a new word.

Cybersieve. :D
